The paper presents a methodology for the analysis of impact exerted by waste management systems on the environment, basing on the definition of environmental quality index. The index is determined by analyzing the distribution of pollutant concentrations in ambient air in effect of waste processing or waste disposal technological processes carried out in the integrated waste management systems in the area under consideration. The proposed methodology for determining the environmental quality index allows to compare different location variants for the same technology in terms of its impact on the natural environment. The result of the calculations is a matrix that allows to determine the quantitative and objective environmental assessment of the location variant. The correctness and usefulness of the model used was confirmed by a calculation example. The model is an environmental management tool that can be used for any installation. The value of the indicator is a matrix in which the size (number of components) is a function of the number of pollutants, the number of points with exceedances, incident points with the sub-areas (thematic layers) of the thematic map and the adopted values of conventional weights (depending on the size and time of deposition of a given pollutant). Comparing the matrix values, e.g. for NOx emissions for individual locations (between 1.099.98–57.901.82), indicates the measurable value of the most advantageous location.

The article presents research on the possibility of using troublesome waste such as: sewage sludge, mineral fraction of municipal waste <10 mm, stabilizer after mechanical-biological processing (MBP), carbon waste, glass - as a flux in the production of new light ceramic materials. Clay was used as the basis of the material. In order to determine the possibility of using individual materials to produce a ceramic material, the oxide composition of individual components was examined using the XRF method. XRF analysis showed the presence of quartz and aluminosilicates in the materials, which makes it possible to use these wastes to produce new materials. Then the waste was ground in a ball mill and mixed in different proportions by adding water and three different materials were obtained. Material A: clay, sewage sludge, waste water, glass. Material B: clay, mineral fraction of waste <10 mm, flotation waste, glass. Material C: clay, stabilizer after mechanical-biological processing, post-mining waste, glass. The materials were subjected to strength and absorbability tests. The most stable was Material B. The highest variability of properties was observed in Material A. On the other hand, a high heterogeneity was observed in Material C. The bulk density for all materials was 658kg/m3 on average.

Coke production is still of great economic importance due to its crucial role in the steel production process. The reliability of the operation of coke oven batteries depends on the maintenance of good technical condition of their ceramic massif, which in turn requires ensuring proper operation of the heating system and maintaining temperature stability in the heating flues. Regularly performed temperature measurements in heating flues due to the size of the battery and the dynamics of accompanying processes do not reflect the actual thermal state of the object at a given time. Corrections commonly introduced to the results of temperature measurements in heating flues, taking into account so-called reversion, significantly improve the accuracy of the obtained measurement results. However, still the interpretation of the results of temperature measurements in the coke oven battery heating flues does not take into account its changes during the coking cycle, even though they reach up to 60 K. The article discusses the usability of the introduction of a new, additional correction to the temperature measured in the heating flues enabling a more precise assessment of the current thermal state of the coke oven battery. The use of the method will allow for reduction of the fuel gas consumption and limitation of emissions resulting from its combustion and can be used as an effective tool for decision making.

An attempt was made to estimate the annual production of CH4 at a municipal waste landfill site in Poland. As a matter of fact, the extent of the unorganized emission of CH4 from the landfill surface was approached based on the adopted mathematical model. The Ward agglomeration method for cluster analysis and the Pearson coefficient were employed to evaluate the distance-based similarity measure and to optimize methods for estimating methane emissions from a landfill as well as to verify the input parameters for the model. In order to calculate the content of biodegradable organic parts in the waste, morphological tests of the landfilled waste were performed. Physical quantities, measurements and the actual amount of the landfilled waste as well as the volume of CH4 neutralized in a collective flare were implemented in the model, respectively. The model-based findings and experimental outcome demonstrated stable gas production in the landfill with a high CH4 content. On the other hand, a rather low efficiency of the landfill passive degassing installation indicated the necessity to design and develop its active counterpart with the prospective application of the generated biogas for energy production in a cogeneration system.

The paper presents advanced computational solutions for selected sectors in the context of the optimization of technology processes as an innovation and progress in improving energy efficiency of smart cities. The main emphasis was placed on the sectors of critical urban infrastructure, including in particular the use of algorithmic models based on artificial intelligence implemented in supervisory control systems (SCADA-type, including Virtual SCADA) of technological processes involving the sewage treatment systems (including in particular wastewater treatment systems) and waste management systems. The novelty of the presented solution involves the use of predictive diagnostic tools, based on multi-threaded polymorphic models supporting decision making processes during the control of a complex technological process and objects of distributed network systems (smart water grid, smart sewage system, smart waste management system) and solving problems of optimal control for smart dynamic objects with logical representation of knowledge about the process, the control object and the control itself, for which the learning process consists of successive validation and updating of knowledge and the use of the results of this updating to make control decisions. The advantage of the proposed solution in relation to the existing ones lies in the use of advanced models of predictive diagnostics, validation and reconstruction of data, implemented in functional tools, allowing the stabilization of the work of technological objects through the use of FTC technology (fault tolerant control) and soft sensors, predictive measurement path diagnostics (sensors, transducers), validation and reconstruction of measurement data from sensors in the measuring paths in real time. The dedicated tools (Intelligent Real Time Diagnostic System − iRTDS) built into the system of a hierarchical, multi-threaded control optimizing system of SCADA system allow to obtain advanced diagnostics of technological processes in real time using HPC technology. In effect of the application of the proprietary iRTDS tool, we obtain a significant rise of energy efficiency of technological processes in key sectors of the economy, which in global terms, e.g., urban agglomeration, increases the economic efficiency.

Introduction. The implementation of the European Union regulations into Polish law resulted in the establishment of such methods of dealing with waste in order to comply with the requirements of environmental protection and waste management plans. Each time the construction of another plant is a social and economic problem, therefore, the enhancement of the form and shape of such a system requires justification. The basic task of municipal waste management is to create technical conditions for the collection, transport, recovery, recycling and disposal of waste. The technical correctness of the system and the scope of the adverse impact resulting in lowering ecological, aesthetic and cultural values will decide about its capital expenditure and operating costs. The large number of imposed, overlapping, and often conflicting goals means that finding a favourable solution and decisively accepting it is a very difficult task, often requiring a compromise. The solution will be based on searching for the shape of a waste management system that, under existing restrictions, will ensure the best possible implementation of specific objectives under the specific conditions of the region. Aim and tasks. The aim of the article is to present the multicriteria analysis method as a tool for analysis and selection of the waste management system in the region. In the multicriteria analysis for the selection of the most beneficial solution, it is necessary to find a function integrating individual objectives into one overall assessment. However, it is possible to choose only one solution - a compromise, and then a consistent implementation of the tasks of the chosen scenario. The presented analysis presents an example for a large city in Poland - Krakow. Research results. The result of the presented calculations is the presentation of the assessment method for various waste management scenarios in the technical, socio-political and economic aspects. Such an assessment allows for an objective comparison between the presented waste management scenarios. Conclusions. The result of the presented methodology of multi-criteria evaluation and analysis is the selection of the most advantageous solution of the waste management system. The presented system was assessed in a multi-aspect manner and the result allows to indicate the best solution in the presented assumptions and limitations. The method is universal and can be used for other waste management and environmental management systems.

Sodium tripolyphosphate, a condensed phosphate applied in various industries, can be produced according to a new dry single-stage method or a classic spray drying two-stage method. To compare variants of sodium tripolyphosphate production, three multi-criteria methods (Borda, compromise programming and analytical hierarchy process) were applied. Assessment criteria of individual—best available technologies not entailing excessive costs options of sodium tripolyphosphate production and complex quality assessment calculation results allowed for the determination of a decision matrix for a choice of sodium tripolyphosphate production technology based on the applied decision methods. Applying the above methods allowed for ordering of the variants of tripolyphosphate production from the most to the least advantageous. The use of various criteria types (technological options and indices for complex quality assessment) as evaluation criteria in multi-criteria analysis allowed for an independent evaluation of the technology. Calculations from Borda and compromise programming methods showed that, in all cases, the assessment criteria used reached the highest possible level for dry single-stage technology for sodium tripolyphosphate production. Results obtained by analytical hierarchy process method confirmed the conclusions from Borda and compromise programming methods. Ranking of the developed technological solutions indicated the dry single-stage method of sodium tripolyphosphate production to be the advantageous technological variant.

Landfill biogas becomes an important factor in elimination of fossil fuels as a result of fast- growing use of renewable energy sources. The article presents an analysis of operation of the plant where landfill biogas was utilized for energy production. The average annually (gross) productions of electric energy and heat at the plant were 1217 MWh and 1,789 MW, respectively. The average calorific value of biogas was 17 MJ/m3, which corresponds to 4,8 kW/m3. According to the measurements and actual readings acquired during operation of a cogeneration unit, it can be stated that the CHP system has been working within its average operation limits and still has some power reserves to utilize. Therefore, the authors concluded that a landfill can be operated both as a producer and a supplier of prosumer energy.

Asbestos is a common term referring to certain mineral groups having the form of fibers with a length to fibre diameter of at least 100: 1. The specific properties of asbestos - flammability, mechanical strength and thermal and flexibility - meant that asbestos has been widely used in various types of industrial technologies. It is classified as hazardous waste and therefore requires special methods for collection, export and disposal. The article proposes a model of logistics exports of asbestos from selected villages, in order to guarantee the shortest route, while maintaining the ecological safety and the rules of transportation of hazardous waste.

This paper presents the use of multi-criteria analysis as a tool that helps choosing an adequate technology for a household wastewater treatment plant. In the process of selection the criteria of sustainable development were taken into account. Five municipal mechanical-biological treatment plants were chosen for the comparative multi-criteria analysis. Different treatment technologies, such as sand filter, activated sludge, trickling filter, a hybrid system - activated sludge/trickling filter and a hybrid constructed wetland system VF-HF type (vertical and horizontal fl ow) were taken into account. The plants’ capacities were 1 m3∙d-1 (PE=8) and they all meet the environmental regulations. Additionally, a solution with a drainage system was included into the analysis. On the basis of multi-criteria analysis it was found that the preferred wastewater treatment technologies, consistent with the principles of sustainable development, were a sand filter and a hybrid constructed wetland type VF-HF. A drainage system was chosen as the best solution due to the economic criteria, however, taking into consideration the primary (ecological) criterion, employment of such systems on a larger scale disagree with the principles of sustainable development. It was found that activated sludge is the least favourable technology. The analysis showed that this technology is not compatible with the principles of sustainable development, due to a lack of proper technological stability and low reliability.
