Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) are a sustainable, green option for extraction and reaction media in biorefineries and various chemical and biotechnological applications. Particularly, enzymatic reactions profit from NADES applications, as these solvents help to maintain high substrate solubility while improving both enzyme stability and efficiency. Recent studies confirmed that NADESs can perform multiple functions simultaneously, as reaction media for biocatalytic conversions, but also as substrates and catalysts for reactions, fulfilling the role of a reactive solvent. This study reports the beneficial effect of designed reactive natural deep eutectic solvents (R-NADESs) on the esterification activity and thermal stability of free and immobilized lipases in the synthesis of polyol- and carbohydrate-based biosurfactants. We manufactured and characterized 16 binary and ternary R-NADES systems with choline chloride (ChCl) as the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and carbohydrate polyols; mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides; urea (U); N-methyl urea (MU); and water as the hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), in different combinations and molar ratios, most of which are reported for the first time in this paper. We determined their physicochemical, thermal, and molecular properties, including among others viscosity, polarizability, and the number of hydrogen bonds, and we showed that these properties are controlled by composition, molar ratio, molecular properties, temperature, and water content. Many lipases, both native and immobilized, showed high stability and remarkable catalytic performance in R-NADESs during esterification reactions.

An efficient and convenient chemoenzymatic route for the synthesis of novel phenolic mono-, di- and oligosaccharide esters is described. Acetal derivatives of glucose, sucrose, lactose and inulin were obtained by chemical synthesis. The fully characterized pure sugar acetals were subjected to enzymatic esterification with 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (HPPA) in the presence of Novozyme 435 lipase as a biocatalyst. The aromatic esters of alkyl glycosides and glucose acetal were obtained with good esterification yields, characterized by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR, 13C NMR). The synthesis of aromatic esters of disaccharide acetals was successful only for the enzymatic esterification of sucrose acetal. The new chemoenzymatic route allowed the synthesis of novel aromatic esters of inulin as the inulin monoacetal monoester and diester and the inulin diacetal monoester with a polymerization degree of two, as well as the inulin monoacetal monoester with a degree of polymerization of three, were obtained by enzymatic acylation of inulin acetals with HPPA. These compounds could represent a new class of sugar ester surfactants with enhanced bioactivity, antioxidative and antimicrobial properties and with potential application in drug delivery systems.

Enzymatic esterification of glucose with lauric acid catalyzed by lipase B from Candida antarctica immobilized on acrylic resins (LAR) was investigated in hydrophilic reactive natural deep eutectic solvents (R-NADES), composed of choline chloride (ChCl) as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and glucose (Glc) and water as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) in different molar ratios. Surprisingly, no glucose esters were obtained, the only esterification product being lauroylcholine chloride, obtained in the ChCl:Glc:H2O (2:1:1) ternary R-NADES. Molecular dynamic simulations clearly explained this unexpected selectivity showing that the lipase-catalyzed synthesis of glucose lauryl esters is hindered by the manifold and strong interactions in the H-bond network and the formation of voluminous adducts of glucose with the chloride ion, that cannot access the alcohol catalytic subsite. The free choline chloride, not involved in the H-bond network of the ChCl:Glc:H2O (2:1:1) R-NADES, did enter the CalB catalytic pocket and was converted to the corresponding lauroylcholine ester.

From the lanthanide group, part of the rare earth elements (REEs), lanthanum is one of the most important elements given its application potential. Although it does not have severe toxicity to the environment, its increased usage in advanced technologies and medical fields and scarce natural reserves point to the necessity also of recovering lanthanum from diluted solutions. Among the multiple methods for separation and purification, adsorption has been recognized as one of the most promising because of its simplicity, high efficiency, and large-scale availability. In this study, a xerogel based on silicon and iron oxides doped with zinc oxide and polymer (SiO2@Fe2O3@ZnO) (SFZ), obtained by the sol–gel method, was considered as an adsorbent material. Micrography indicates the existence of particles with irregular geometric shapes and sizes between 16 μm and 45 μm. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals the presence of dimples on the top of the material. The specific surface area of the material, calculated by the Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET) method, indicates a value of 53 m2/g, with C constant at a value of 48. In addition, the Point of Zero Charge (pHpZc) of the material was determined to be 6.7. To establish the specific parameters of the La(III) adsorption process, static studies were performed. Based on experimental data, kinetic, thermodynamic, and equilibrium studies, the mechanism of the adsorption process was established. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.7 mg/g, at a solid/liquid ratio = 0.1 g:25 mL, 4 < pH < 6, 298 K, after a contact time of 90 min. From a thermodynamic point of view, the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and occurs at the adsorbent–adsorbate interface. The Sips model is the most suitable for describing the observed adsorption process, indicating a complex interaction between La(III) ions and the adsorbent material. The material can be reused as an adsorbent material, having a regeneration capacity of more than 90% after the first cycle of regeneration. The material was reused 3 times with considerable efficiency.

Given the natural origins of flavylium derivatives, their chemical modifications, and their large potential uses in food, medicine, or green chemistry, the present review is a comprehensive study of flavylium-derived compounds. Several topics such as the green extraction and isolation techniques of flavylium derivatives including their chemical modifications and various characterization tools such as NMR, HPLC, and mass spectrometry are discussed in the review. Furthermore, the use of these derivatives in medicine, food, and materials science is presented, highlighting their relevance and the need for further investigation. Therefore, by examining the advantages and disadvantages of natural and synthetic sources, the review asserts the increased relevance of flavylium-based compounds in active molecules.
