The use of pre-excavation equipment withdrawal channels (EWCs) at the stop-production line is important for the rapid withdrawal of coal mining equipment. However, during the final mining period, the dynamic pressure of a pre-excavated double EWC is severe, which leads to instability of the surrounding rock around the EWCs. Therefore, in this paper, the methods of field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation were used to systematically study the stress and plastic zone evolution of a double EWC during the final mining period. Firstly, the distribution characteristics of mining abutment pressure and roadway failure modes under the action of mining abutment pressure were analyzed theoretically. Afterward, a FLAC3D mining numerical model was established according to the distribution of rock strata obtained from roof detection. Finally, the evolution laws of the stress fields and plastic zones of the EWCs during final mining were obtained by numerical simulation. The present study suggests that asymmetric stress distribution dominates asymmetric failure of the surrounding rock around the EWCs during the final mining period, and deformation failure within 10 m from the working face to the main EWC (MEWC) accounted for most of the roadway deformation. Based on the research results combined with actual production experience, the stability control technique of the surrounding rock with reinforcement of anchor cables and double-row buttress hydraulic support for the MEWC was put forward. After the field application, the ideal result was obtained.
The precursor of rock failure around a hole has always been one of the research hotspots in the field of rock mechanics, and the distribution of the plastic zone is often adopted to reflect the location and form of rock failure. The shape of the plastic zone around a hole before rock failure can guide the mechanism of and early warning methods for geotechnical engineering disasters, while previous theoretical research and numerical simulation results show that the shape of the plastic zone around the hole is butterfly shaped under specific stress, which is referred to as butterfly failure theory. Studies also indicate that the butterfly shape of the plastic zone around a hole is considered to be the main cause of many disasters, which signifies the importance of studying the morphology of the plastic zone near rock failure. Therefore, this study is committed to finding the specific shape of the plastic zone near rock failure through relatively accurate and a high number of AE event location results, and the final experimental results show that the plastic zone around the hole is basically a butterfly shape near rock failure. This study verifies the correctness of the butterfly failure theory and provides an important reference for the study of geotechnical engineering disaster mechanisms and monitoring methods. The fact that the plastic zone in the early stage of rock failure in this study tends to be butterfly shaped preliminarily indicates the fractal law of rock failure. In the moment before rock failure, the distribution of AE events is more regular, which leads to large-scale collapse type failure.
There is a great risk of roof falls in the advance support section of the mining face (ASSoMF), and it is difficult to control the roof. Based on the soft roof of Lijiahao coal mine, this paper studies the stress distribution of the ASSoMF and the space-time evolution of the surrounding rock plastic zone by using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, and reveals its failure mechanism. Based on the control effect of support resistance on plastic zone, it is proposed that the advance support should mainly adapt to the roadway deformation. Advance equipment without repeated support for mechanized movement has been developed, and the support timing analysis and strength check have been carried out. Results show that the roadway at ASSoMF is in a non-uniform stress field, the confining pressure ratio reaches 1.5~7, and the surrounding rock forms asymmetric failure; the principal stress direction deflects, the angle between it and the vertical direction is about 10°~25°, and the plastic zone of the surrounding rock also rotates to the roadway roof. The proposed equipment can adapt to the characteristics of an unsymmetrical large deformation of a soft roof, and can effectively bear the roof load and maintain the stability of the roadway.

The stability of the roadway surrounding rock is the key factor of underground mining. Roof subsidence occurred during roadway excavation in the Menkeqing Coal Mine. For the sake of safety, it was decided to stop tunneling project and strengthen roadway support, which resulted in a delay of the construction period and economic damage. To maintain the stability of the surrounding rock, we carried out a systematic study through field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The deformation and failure law of the surrounding rock, roof structure characteristics, and mechanical properties of the surrounding rock were obtained by field monitoring. The failure characteristics and forms of deep composite roof roadway are further analyzed. The key points of stability of the roadway surrounding rock of soft rock composite laminated roof are obtained by theoretical analysis, i.e., improving the effective stress diffusion efficiency of the anchor cable through the reasonable arrangement of the anchor cable. We use FLAC numerical simulation software to study the influence of different supporting parameters of anchor cable on the stress diffusion in the surrounding rock and put forward the optimal parameters. The optimized support parameters have been applied in the field, and the ideal results have been obtained.
The underground roadway of the Buertai Coal Mine adopts the double-roadway layout. Double-roadway layout mode has a roadway that is affected by repeated mining, called reserved roadways. The reserved roadway is strongly affected by mining, and the strata behaviors appear violently. This paper studies the strata behaviors that occur in auxiliary haulage roadway (AHR) during the mining of panel 42106. By analyzing geological conditions, mining influencing factors, and roadway layout, the mechanism of strong rock behavior has been clarified. Then, based on the theoretical analysis, we put forward the treatment method for the manifestation of strong strata behaviors by using hydraulic fracturing technology to break the key stratum. In this way, the high stress of the surrounding rock can be reduced by forcing the hard roof to be broken. After the application of hydraulic fracturing technology, we monitored the deformation of roadways and the periodic weighting law of the working face. The strength of strata behaviors has significantly weakened, and the application of this technology ensures the safe production of coal mines.
