Ecological water conveyance is an important way to promote the restoration of degraded ecosystems in arid watersheds. However, there are few previous research results on how to quantitatively evaluate the effect of ecological water conveyance on ecological restoration. In this regard, this paper selects the Tarim River Basin as a typical area, analyzing the changes of desert riparian vegetation and hydrological elements, constructing a watershed ecological environment quality evaluation system, and comprehensively evaluating the ecological water conveyance effect of the damaged desert forest ecosystem. The conclusion showed that the proportion of the pixel area with an upward trend of Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) from 2000 to 2021 is as high as 84.3%. The plant diversity index in the ecological water conveyance area showed the characteristics of first obvious increase and then stable. The main body of groundwater depth showed an upward trend, and the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) showed a downward trend of pixel area accounting for 57.0%, which indicated that ecological water conveyance had played a positive role in groundwater recharge and ecological restoration along the Tarim River. The ecological environment quality of the river basin showed a trend of transition from low-grade to high-grade, and the area with excellent ecological quality had increased from 4,635.50 km2 in 2000 to 12,335.0 km2 in 2021. The above research provides important scientific reference for the protection and restoration of vegetation degradation in arid watersheds.

Stable or marginal mass loss dominating in Karakoram has been reported widely through satellite and ground investigations. This work aimed to verify the variation in glacier mass by collecting ground-based data. By tracking profiles from the first survey by China–Pakistan Batura Glacier Investigation Group in 1974–1975, we revisited Batura Glacier and conducted an updated comparable measurement of the glacier surface elevation and ice thickness of this large valley glacier of Karakoram, in August 2017. Results of ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurement were used to improve the accuracy of an ice thickness distribution model (GlabTop2). The model calculation agreed reasonably with the measurement when the optimal basal shear stress (100 kPa for clean ice to 140 kPa for heavy debris cover) and shape factor (0.9) were used. We then used a glacier bed topographies map to calculate the ice flux. By subtracting the glacier surface topographies from the remote-sensing measurements, we observed a marginal thinning in Batura during 2000–2016, with a rate of variation in glacier surface elevation of −0.12 ± 0.27 m a−1. It indicated that the mass gain in the accumulation area nearly compensated the mass loss in the ablation area. In addition, both ground and satellite remote measurement reveal a steady rate of decrease in surface of the Batura tongue, implying an absence of significant variation during the past 40 years. Moreover, the mass conservation equation was applied to the Batura tongue, in combination with surface elevation variation and ice flux evolution. The tongue-averaged mass balance diminished by more than half from the 1970s to the 2010s. In summary, we inferred a near-steady state of Batura Glacier post 2000 based on the above-mentioned evidence of “Karakoram Anomaly”.

Ecological conservation and restoration have increasingly captured attention worldwide due to the degradation of ecosystems. As one of the most ecologically fragile areas, the Tarim River Basin, of Xinjiang, China, encountered serious decline of desert riparian forests. The Chinese government has implemented the “Ecological Water Conveyance Project” (EWCP) since 2000, protecting and restoring the dominant natural species of the desert riparian forests, i.e., Populus euphratica Oliv. The regenerative effect after the water conveyance was noteworthy. For the purpose of clarifying the mechanism of P. euphratica forest regeneration to find a better prescription for the ecological restoration works in the Tarim River Basin, we investigated the relationship between the distribution of P. euphratica and soil salinity. Experimentally evaluated the effects of surface soil salinity on P. euphratica seed germination and the influence of river flooding on the salinity of surface soils. The results showed that (1) P. euphratica trees mainly spread along the river channel within 2 km; with increasing vertical distance to the channel, the number of trees declined significantly; (2) where the salinity of the surface soil is high, there are less living P. euphratica trees; (3) the germination of P. euphratica seeds decreases with increased soil conductivity; when the soil conductivity was higher than 7 ms/cm, the germination of P. euphratica seeds was severely curtailed. (4) Flooding regimes were a pre-condition of P. euphratica restoration; they had profound effects on improving the germination of the seeds via ameliorating water conditions and reducing salinity. Our results point out that the most efficient ecological prescription for restoring and protecting desert riparian forests is to induce flooding twice yearly during June to August with 10- to 15-day durations each time. Such a plan (especially in the Tarim River Basin) should prioritize the protection of seedlings.

The Tarim River Basin in China has predominantly assumed the task of commodity cotton and other high water-intensive crop production in recent years. The spatial matching status of agricultural water and land resources is a prerequisite for local economic development. This paper provides an insight into the spatiotemporal variation trends of agricultural production water footprint and oasis farmland in the Tarim River Basin. The degree of spatial mismatching between oasis farmland and crop production water footprints studied in this paper found how the crop water footprint affected the change in oasis farmland area by sensitivity analysis. Time series data covering the period of 1990–2015 were used for the study. The results showed that the annual variation of crop production water footprint and oasis farmland area have experienced upward trends in Tarim River Basin. The blue water makes the largest contribution to the components of the crop production water footprint in each district (all exceeded 77%). The crop production water footprint and oasis farmland area tend to aggregate towards the eastern region. The level of spatial mismatch between the blue water footprint and farmland area fluctuated during the study period, but it was gradually remedied after 2000, while the spatial mismatch between green water footprint and farmland area gradually worsened. The number of districts with mid and high sensitivity to changes in blue water footprint continuously increased during 1990–2005, which revealed that the change in blue water footprint has an increasing influence on oasis farmland. The results can provide operable recommendations for efficient use of water resources, maintaining oasis suitable farmland scale and agricultural sustainable development in the Tarim River Basin.

Scientifically determining agricultural water consumption is fundamental to the optimum allocation and regulation of regional water resources. However, traditional statistical methods used for determining agricultural water consumption in China do not reflect the actual use of water resources. This paper determined the variation in the crop water footprint (CWF) to reflect the actual agricultural water consumption in Xinjiang, China, during the past 30 years, and the data from 15 crops were included. In addition, the STIRPAT (stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence and technology) model was used to determine the factors influencing the CWF. The results showed that the CWF in Xinjiang increased by 256% during the 30-year period. Factors such as population, agricultural added value, and effective irrigated area were correlated with an increase in the CWF. This study also showed that the implementation of national and regional policies significantly accelerated the expansion of agricultural production areas and increased the amount of agricultural water used. The objectives of this paper were to identify the factors influencing the CWF, give a new perspective for further analysis of the relationship between agricultural growth and water resources utilization, and provide a reference for local policy decision-makers in Xinjiang.

Irrigation plays an important role in China’s agricultural production, and a reasonable assessment of water resources consumption in agricultural production will contribute to improved agricultural water management practices. The objectives of this study were to analyze variations in the magnitude of the crop water footprint (CWF) in Xinjiang and determine the major factors that influence variation in order to provide proposals for water resources management. The CWF of Xinjiang from 1988 to 2015 was calculated, and the impacts of crop-planting structures, agricultural inputs, and water conservancy projects on agricultural water use were analyzed to evaluate the suitable amount of agricultural water utilization and area of farmland in Xinjiang. Results show that the magnitude of the CWF in Xinjiang significantly increased during the study period. Construction of water conservancy projects greatly facilitated water diversion and had the closest relationship with the growth of CWF. The appropriate water volume and planting area for agriculture in Xinjiang is calculated to be 39.4 billion m3 and 4.3 million ha, respectively, which are 73% and 65% of the current water consumption and cultivated area, respectively. These results can be used as a reference for reducing agricultural water consumption and the farmland area in Xinjiang.
