Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide comprehensive information on preventive maintenance (PM) planning and methods used in the industry in order to achieve an effective maintenance system. Design/methodology/approach: The literature review is organized in a way that provides the general overview of the researches done in the PM. This paper discusses the literatures that had been reviewed on four main topics, which are the holistic view of maintenance policies, PM planning, PM planning concept and PM planning-based in developing optimal planning in executing PM actions. Findings: PM policy is one of the original proactive techniques that has been used since the start of researches on maintenance system. Review of the methods presented in this paper shows that most researches analyse effectiveness using artificial intelligence, simulation, mathematical formulation, matrix formation, critical analysis and multi-criteria method. While in practice, PM activities were either planned based on cost, time or failure. Research trends on planning and methods for PM show that the variation of approaches used over the year from early 1990s until today. Practical implications: Research about PM is known to be extensively conducted and majority of companies applied the policy in their production line. However, most analysis and method suggested in published literatures were done based on mathematical computation rather than focussing on solution to real problems in the industry. This normally would lead to the problems in understanding by the practitioner. Therefore, this paper presented researches on PM planning and suggested on the methods that are practical, simple and effective for application in the real industry. Originality/value: The originality of this paper comes from its detail analysis of PM planning in term of its research focus and also direction for application. Extensive reviews on the methods adopted in relation to PM planning based on the planning-based such as cost-based, time-based and failure-based were also provided.

In many modern engineering fields, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been adopted as a methodology to solve complex problems. CFD is becoming a key component in developing updated designs and optimization through computational simulations, resulting in lower operating costs and enhanced efficiency. Even though the biomimetics application is complex in adapting nature to inspire new capabilities for exciting future technologies, the recent CFD in biomimetics is more accessible and practicable due to the availability of high-performance hardware and software with advances in computer sciences. Many simulations and experimental results have been used to study the analyses in biomimetics applications, particularly those related to aerospace engineering. There are numerous examples of biomimetic successes that involve making simple copies, such as the use of fins for swimming or the mastery of flying, which became possible only after the principles of aerodynamics were better understood. Therefore, this review discusses the essential methodology of CFD as a reliable tool for researchers in understanding the technology inspired by nature and an outlook for potential development through simulations. CFD plays a major role as decision support prior to undertaking a real commitment to execute any design inspired by nature and providing the direction to develop new capabilities of technologies.

A finite element (FE) model is developed to study the structural performance on a composite wing of a UAV with a tubercle design at the leading edge of the wing. The experimental study of the designation of the composite at the wing skin is carried out to prove the simulation validity through material characteristics. In this paper, the numerical modeling for simulation is highlighted to correlate the process parameter setting of simulation replicating the actual experimental tests. The percentage difference was calculated to be 11.1% by tensile and 10.47% by flexural. The numerical work applied the study of FE analysis and developed a standardized numerical approach for structural optimization, known as FE-ACP simulation. The significant findings of deformation are obtained according to Schrenk’s aerodynamic loading, while the prediction of failure mode of Tsai–Wu under interaction among stresses and strains was acquired at the seventh and eighth layer of both spars.

Navigating hazardous environments, such as areas with fire risks, wild animal activity, or inaccessible terrains, poses significant challenges, necessitating the development of bio-inspired robotic systems. This study focuses on the biomechanical design and kinematic analysis of a spider-mimicking robot, specifically examining quad and hexa-legged configurations to optimize movement efficiency and stability. The research employed 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) in Fusion 360 to model and simulate the robot's leg framework, analyzing deformation, tension, and strain. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) with Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) material was used for component fabrication, chosen for its balance of lightweight properties and structural integrity, validated through stress analysis. A single limb’s forward and reverse kinematics were studied, enabling the development of optimized gait patterns. SIMSCAPE Multibody in MATLAB was utilized for dynamic simulations, and Proportional Derivative (PD) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers were tested to evaluate trajectory tracking accuracy and stability. Results show that the six-legged configuration exhibits superior stability with a 15% improvement in gait cycle efficiency and a 20% reduction in energy consumption per stride compared to the four-legged counterpart. The use of PID controllers further enhanced performance, achieving a 12% improvement in settling time and reducing oscillations in trajectory tracking tasks. The choice of PLA material ensured durability under operational loads, with minimal deformation over repeated stress cycles. Servomotor selection and configuration were tailored to optimize torque and speed, enabling precise leg control. This study highlights the potential of bio-inspired robots to advance robotic mobility through optimized kinematics and material choices.

In this paper, a comprehensive numerical analysis of a bladeless Tesla microturbine is presented. Various studies on the effects of Tesla design parameters have shown promising results. However, the limitations associated with the inherent nozzle design have often highlighted the low efficiency of the turbine. Therefore, the study was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to demonstrate the efficiency of the turbine as a function of the performance of different openings of the inlet nozzles, i.e., as 1-opening and individual pitot tube opening. In this work, a validation study was performed with the existing manuscript before further investigating the effects of the different openings of the inlet nozzles. The results show that the configuration of 4 inlets with 4 openings (4i4o) results in higher velocity and pressure distribution compared to 4 inlets with 1 opening (4i1o). Consequently, 4i4o obtained a higher torque value compared to 4i1o with a difference of 10%. Hence, the thrust and efficiency values for the 4i40 were 33.69% and 34.30%, respectively, higher compared to the 4i1o. The performance of the Tesla turbine with the specified optimal configuration increased very significantly compared to the previous research studies. It can be concluded that the introduction of the functional theory of the ‘pitot-tube’, which considers the gaps individually by having a separate inlet for each of them, had a great impact on the performance of Tesla turbine.
