Donatella Privitera is a confirmed researcher of Geography at the University of Catania, where she carries out the course in Economics of tourism businesses. An author of several publications, she has dedicated numerous studies to the market problems of Mediterranean agricultural productions, an area that was studied in depth during the specialization master in agri–food Economics. In recent times, his research interests have focused on issues concerning the territorial and urban economy and the geography of transport.
Land grabbing and land use were and continue to be highly impactful topics for the scientific communities all around the world. Even though land grabbing has been generally approached in relation to transitional economies, agriculture and land grabbing still represent strategic vectors of economic growth, including in the modern economies and knowledge-based societies, mainly because they significantly contribute to assuring food security. Land grabbing is linked to export competitiveness, as the agricultural production structure imposes specific characteristics of the national production of agri-food products and, in some cases, this is how dependency on the imports is generated, in order to ensure food security. This dependency can occur in the case of a few or more types of agri-food products, based on land use. In this context, this chapter aims at performing comparative bibliometric analysis on the topics of land grabbing and food export competitiveness. Findings highlight the intensification of scientific interests concerning bioeconomy and ecological issues in relation to food trade, land grabbing, and land use, as well as the correlation with traditional topics, such as food safety and climate change.

The study looks at the problems facing coastal fishing communities. It highlights the impacts that, in the complex framework of the EU reforms, have manifested themselves on economic activities and on society. The aim of the paper is twofold: to examine small-scale artisanal fishing in an area of Southern Italy in order to develop resilience and diversification and at the same time to outline the profiles of local bluefish buyers to highlight development strategies for the sector. The research carried out through a direct survey by administering a questionnaire to fishermen operating in areas of Southern Italy and the data cross-referenced with the opinions of local consumers. A conjoint experiment, followed by a multiple correspondence analysis and cluster identification, was used to outline the profiles of local bluefish buyers. The results of the analysis reveal that the fish market and the restaurant sector are the main distribution channels preferred by fishermen. Furthermore, fishermen are very sensitive to environmental issues and are willing to collaborate and actively participate in the environmental protection of the sea. Consumers recognise the quality of local bluefish, and they implicitly perceive the sustainability of the method of capture. The results show the need to undertake synergistic actions for the fishing industry, capable of activating marketing strategies adequately to support, promote and develop the sector. The results of the study provide helpful information for food companies in order to better segment their market and target their consumers, as well as to effectively promote their product using brands, certifications and traceability.

Sustainable development is in many ways the fundamental basis of tourism. The importance and role of sustainable tourism development in the 21st century is at the center of this paper on eco-certificates and green procurement in the hotel industry, within the field of the responsible or green economy. The green hotel economy implies the selection of accommodation in environmentally responsible hotels and other facilities, which are directing their business operations towards green procurement, eco-labeling, and the responsible economy. This paper includes quantitative research of the attitudes of 506 international tourists, who expressed their views on their needs regarding eco-hotels and the green economy in the hotel industry. This research also included the collection of data on green (responsible) businesses by surveying 100 hotels situated in the capitals of southern Europe. Comparing results from hotels with the needs of tourists in terms of the green economy in the hotel industry, significant results were obtained that contribute to sustainable tourism development.

Territorial development and rural tourism are linked. Rural tourism involves tourists in rural areas who are attracted by the distinctive character of the landscape, recreation such as local and food resources, and the potential for spiritual, environmental, and cultural growth. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the economic, sustainable, and social role of tourism in the development of the rural area of Mărginimea Sibiului in Romania. It highlights the role of local entrepreneurs in developing new practices and sustainable approaches. Drawing on the literature review on the topic of sustainable rural tourism, this paper uses the case study as a methodological approach. We have developed consistent desk research relying on the processing of official governmental data and of national statistics, supported by analytical strategies involving induction and deduction. The main findings lead towards the conclusion that Mărginimea Sibiului has managed to gain both national and international notoriety while developing coherently, capitalizing on its natural and cultural heritage, and providing services in successful agritourist boarding houses and rural guesthouses, which have continuously developed both numerically and in terms of comfort levels. Because more than two thirds of the initially established lodgings in the early 2000s continue to function today, these facilities have proven to be sustainable and attractive businesses.

Multifunctionality and social farming represent forms of resilience and innovation within urban and rural systems, making use of agricultural, rural, natural, and cultural resources to produce multiple benefits and eco-systemic services. Social farming (SF) introduces innovative activities capable of representing a factor supporting the competitiveness of the production system and represents a tool for responding to the growing needs of urban and rural populations in social, economic, and environmental terms, in relation to the offer of social- health, social-work, recreative and educational services. SF is an innovative model of territorial, participatory, relational, and community service development that looks to an inclusive, sustainable, fair, and supportive society. Its success is linked to the ability to spread within the economic system and become a circular economy model highlighting good practices and as a virtuous example for other companies. The purpose of this work is to examine the role and social impact that Social Farming has in the environmental, social, and cultural changes of the territories where they are located. Case studies in an area of Southern Italy—the Calabria region—were examined with multicriteria methodologies (social network analysis; multiple correspondence analysis) to identify the type of social activity carried out and the propensity to introduce innovations based on services ecosystems on farms. The results show the potential and value of the companies that carry out these social innovation activities. The analysis carried out has drawn some indicative profiles of socially oriented multifunctional companies.

The New Urban Agenda provides a number of relevant references to sustainable mobility; it promotes walkability and cycling with the goal of improving health and well-being, and includes measures to improve road safety and design. This chapter advocates for attention to urban cycling in assisting in the transition to sustainable mobility as a possible way to increase the sustainable supply of urban transport in cities. Promoting and developing cycling is important for individuals’ health, reduction in road traffic collisions, environmental sustainability, and transport demand management. Cities need a cycling culture and there is a role for national governments in supporting the development of cycling. Policy makers should think carefully about potential consequences of policy initiatives. This study focuses on Italian cities in terms of development, sustainability, and infrastructures to promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. The results suggest deficiencies in cycling levels in Italy where the development of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport is still far from that of other European countries. In addition, cycling levels are much higher in northern Italian cities than in cities in the South. The differences are related to the overall mobility culture of the cities, and specifically to the different infrastructures and policies.

The study examines the phenomenon of transhumance in Calabria, through two case studies. Unlike the other regions, the Calabrian transhumance is characterized by the majority use of sheep breeds, for the brevity of the tracks and for the difficulty of the same. Furthermore, although the phenomenon has historical roots, the passage of animals on “carrere” has always assumed a precarious character and has not left significant structures in the areas concerned. The study examines two transhumance routes in areas very close to the city of Reggio Calabria, in the south of Italy. That deals with routes historically used by shepherds to bring the flocks to higher altitudes and rich in water and pastures in the hot summer months. Results demonstrates that part of the first route has been absorbed by driveways, so its recovery, even for tourism purposes, seems difficult to propose. The second route, placed in environments that are not heavily populated and the environmental context is less compromised with more space to a hypothesis of recovery and enhancement, also with a view to widespread hospitality, a reception touristic model that in certain aspromontane areas has recorded great interest in recent years.

In recent years, cutting-edge information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been implemented at different scales in order to improve tourists’ experiences of cultural heritage. In particular, advanced technologies combining augmented reality can offer a deeply immersive visitor’s experience aiming both at providing multifaceted information about the site and enhancing the attractiveness of a tourist destination at the different scales. Thus, the study aims at critically scrutinising the intersection of AR and tourist practices through the analysis of tourism destination stakeholders’ perceived value of AR solutions. The aim is to understand how it is crucial to take into account stakeholders’ perceptions about cutting-edge technology development, apart from providing practical implications for industry practitioners and local institutional actors. From the methodological standpoint, the article is based on a multi-method approach encompassing field-work observation, in addition to a stakeholder and case study approach, aiming at evaluating internal and external stakeholders’ perceived value through a qualitative perspective based on semi-structured interviews with institutional actors, entrepreneurs, visitors and local community representatives. The results suggested some critical reflections about the inherent elusiveness of technological innovation in the case it is not incorporated in a long-term sustainable vision.

This chapter analyses the dynamic of the development of cycling in Italy situating it also in the European context from an economic and strategic perspective. With this aim, first there was a study of the challenge of rapidly growing urban populations in spatially very limited areas affects not only residential housing construction. It also relates to urban infrastructure and services. This led to identification of new mobility needs, met mainly by private means, with implications in terms of congestion and air pollution. Results are analysed in terms of total trips of non-motorized urban mobility and help at understanding how promoting cycling is important for individual health, environmental sustainability and transport demand management. The chapter brings the debate on sustainable transport policy into direct confrontation with the embodied practice of cycling in an urbanized environment.

Sustainable tourism development of the northern part of Serbia in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina aims to achieve ecological, sociocultural, and economic benefits. This means that all entities should be included in the planning and implementation of tourism, such as the local community, tourists, and state entities, while tourism activity should be focused on improving ecological principles and sociocultural conception in a destination. One of the models of this development is seen in specific products that can play a significant role in tourism development. Such an authentic product is wine, which has a very important role in the promotion of tourism. The aim of this paper is to explore Vojvodina—the region of Serbia—as a valuable wine tourism destination in the country, especially the experiences of the wine routes. We use descriptive statistics techniques to summarize and present the data and adopt a correlation analysis technique to describe respondents’ preference on the importance of the wine routes. In the empirical survey, the main conclusion is a positive correlation that by developing wine tourism in Vojvodina, we can influence economic development of the region.

This study highlights the preferences and motivations of tourists for the choice of destinations to visit. Natural, cultural, gastronomic attractions, places of consumption, and identity/immaterial motivations are examined through social network analysis and validated through the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The study explores the relational variables that can explain the attractiveness of the places and the propensity to visit them. To identify the visitor profiles and the reasons behind their choices, a sample survey was carried out in Lipari, in the Aeolian Islands, interviewing tourists, residents, and people present on the island for work reasons. From the results obtained, profiles emerged with very different characteristics. They vary among those who are attentive to the identity and sustainability of the territory and appreciate the beauty of the sea to others who are attracted mainly for places of consumption and gastronomy, and finally, to people who are indifferent to the attractiveness of the place. This study contributes to the knowledge of the tourist understanding of fragile places with a strong tourist attraction and provides indications for better use of the resources present, oriented towards eco-sustainable hospitality systems and the environment. The study discusses the implications of its findings for future research and provides insights for planning tourism services.

Wine is a key element in the development and promotion of tourism. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from the perspective of the growers, how a specific area - Aeolian Islands - is organized in order to develop wine tourism. The methodology employed for this study consisted of a combination of surveys, interviews and field observations with the suppliers. Results indicate that the implementation of wine tourism will be a significant challenge as the respondents report a lack of marketing and tourism management skill and knowledge. Most are small sized enterprises which means they have little man power available to devote to developing wine tourism; and there is a low level of reported cooperation amongst stakeholders

Google AdSense, a cost per click (CPC) advertising programme for those wishing to place ads on their website. Arguable viewed as promising in business, this literature review identifies key features of this promise when applied to education. This chapter connects business and education to identify Google AdSense as a valid tool and subject matter to be considered for use within the mobile and wearable technology curriculum. This chapter suggests considering positive outcomes generated using Google AdSense for incorporation into an education curriculum. Google AdSense should be applied to create more reasons to attract diverse user groups. This chapter also identifies the importance of Google needing a set of regulatory policies and procedures to avoid misuse of Google AdSense. In cases where monetary transactions occur, a possibility of violating the set terms and conditions exists. The chapter concludes with a clear call for inclusion of Google AdSense in an education curriculum.

In recent times, slum tourism has become one of the fastest growing niche tourism segments in the world. The favela, slum, township, gecekondu appear into a tourist destination as part of the so-called reality tour phenomenon. In the tourist sector, the web plays an important role. In fact, consumer choices are aided by information picked up through the internet, which is an ideal place to communicate, promote and sell destinations and where potential travellers can undertake comparisons and choices more responsibly. This paper evaluates tour whole sales websites to analyse different types of strategic choices. The websites are evaluated using an extended Model of Internet Commerce Adoption (eMICA) methodological approach that draws on the evolutionary development of electronic commerce. Considering that internet includes a wide variety of technologies, which could bring potential benefits and reach new customers, it is important that website information is complete and attractive. The following study is of an exploratory nature. Through the results of the study, it is possible to gain knowledge of the slum e-tourism.
