Over the past 10 years, the concepts and objectives of circular economy have been increasingly detailed and become strategic issues of international, European, and national policies. However, the transition towards circular production models continues to be affected by several barriers and critical factors that make the transition difficult to achieve. The paper tries to design a relationship between sustainable production and lean production, highlighting the opportunity to invest in reverse‐logistics and how Industry 4.0 system represents a breeding ground for circular economy targets application. The aim of the current study is to examine the relationships among sustainable production, lean production, and Industry 4.0 in order to evidence the need to adopt a lean methodology and Industry 4.0 technologies in a sustainable development perspective for companies. Following a holistic vision, the authors summarize the production principles and formulas, which, although in parallel, lead to similar results and therefore represent the pillars of a competitive and sustainable business. In conclusion, exploring the circular economy principles and production chain model, challenges, opportunities, and future outlooks are formulated.
The healthcare sector produces 2 gigatons of CO2. To address this impactful trend and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the adoption of circular economy (CE) practices could represent a strategic target. In this context, the present article provides a systematic and bibliometric literature review of CE practices applied in the healthcare sector by considering the collected case studies. This study aims to analyze the state of the art in CEs in the healthcare sector in order to identify CE practices in healthcare, examining how they contribute to sustainability goals and the critical issues in their implementation. A final selection of 36 articles from reputable databases, Web of Science and Scopus, was obtained and analyzed using VOSviewer. By systematically examining these papers, the study investigates the key CE practices implemented within the healthcare sector and their respective areas of application, which help the broader mission of achieving SDG 12, and also, to a lesser extent, SDG 9. Although the research criteria impose some limitations, this study offers a comprehensive review of successful circular practices adopted in the healthcare sector while shedding light on existing gaps and providing valuable insights for relevant stakeholders.
The increase in energy demand requires urgent investments in sustainable energy. It is vital to the success of the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The article aimed to assess the situation of the European Union countries with regard to energy use. Indicators related to the implementation of SDG7 and environmental and resource productivity of the economy were adopted for the study. The research presented in this article fits into contemporary debates on the effectiveness of implementing one of the SDG7: ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. The analysis included 26 countries that have been in the European Union since 2010. The study’s originality lies in the use of primary data obtained from the Eurostat database for three research periods: 2010, 2015, and 2020, which will allow for assessing the situation of the surveyed EU countries in the area of energy use. In order to achieve the research objective, selected methods of descriptive statistics and vector measurement were used. The application of a vector measure made it possible to rank the studied countries in terms of efficient energy use. Based on the results obtained, there is a significant variation in space and time in the evolution of the energy system of the European Union’s member states toward sustainable development. Rational energy use is primarily the domain of north-western European countries, with Sweden and Austria always leading the rankings. However, this does not mean that in these countries, in spite of their high position in the ranking, the levels of some indicators in 2015 and 2020 as compared with those in 2010 did not deteriorate. Due to this fact, attention should be paid to the energy use process and identification of signals responsible for deteriorating the outcomes. The research results can help diagnose the results obtained so far and correct the European Union’s climate and energy policy in the future.
Recent researches on behavioral finance have tested for, among others, evidence for the relations between weather, investors’ mood, and investment decisions. Many of the researches related to the influence of some weather factors, such as sunshine duration on stock exchange returns, but there is no complex research taking into account a wide group of weather factors determining investors’ mood. The main goal of the article is to verify the influence of weather factors on basic market parameters of energy sector companies quoted on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Rates of return, trading volumes, and values of trading volume are taken into account during the research. All analyses are based on econometric models assuming the existence of typical problems of estimation such as: autocorrelation of residuals, heteroskedasticity, or abnormality of residuals. The best approximation of models was obtained for GARCH (Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity) type models.
Sustainable development is an important element of the interests of modern economics. In order to function on the market and develop, companies must adhere to the principles of sustainable development. In this context, the interest of companies in the implementation and application of ESG strategies is growing. In the long-term perspective, the use of this type of strategy is to generate an increase in the company’s value. This value is of interest to the company’s stakeholders, who may use the information about the company’s value, e.g., in terms of its management or investment. The aim of the article is to examine the relationship between the company’s value and its fundamental strength. The analysis covers companies from the energy sector (listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange) that declare the use of ESG practices. The time range of the research covers the years 2013–2020. For the purpose of the study, selected statistical measures and the Fundamental Power Index (FPI) were used. This indicator synthetically evaluates all areas of the company’s operations. The results of the research show that the value of the company is not influenced by its fundamental strength. Therefore, the investors do not reduce the company’s value in the light of information on its fundamental strength. In addition, companies vary in terms of fundamental strength measured by FPI.
