Nowadays, the ever-increasing complication and severity of security attacks on computer networks have inspired security researchers to incorporate different machine learning methods to protect the organizations’ data and reputation. Deep learning is one of the exciting techniques which recently are vastly employed by the IDS or intrusion detection systems to increase their performance in securing the computer networks and hosts. This survey article focuses on the deep learning-based intrusion detection schemes and puts forward an in-depth survey and classification of these schemes. It first presents the primary background concepts about IDS architecture and various deep learning techniques. It then classifies these schemes according to the type of deep learning methods utilized in each of them. It describes how deep learning networks are utilized in the intrusion detection process to recognize intrusions accurately. Finally, a complete analysis of the investigated IDS frameworks is provided, and concluding remarks and future directions are highlighted.

In recent years, flying ad hoc networks have attracted the attention of many researchers in industry and universities due to easy deployment, proper operational costs, and diverse applications. Designing an efficient routing protocol is challenging due to unique characteristics of these networks such as very fast motion of nodes, frequent changes of topology, and low density. Routing protocols determine how to provide communications between drones in a wireless ad hoc network. Today, reinforcement learning (RL) provides powerful solutions to solve the existing problems in the routing protocols, and designs autonomous, adaptive, and self-learning routing protocols. The main purpose of these routing protocols is to ensure a stable routing solution with low delay and minimum energy consumption. In this paper, the reinforcement learning-based routing methods in FANET are surveyed and studied. Initially, reinforcement learning, the Markov decision process (MDP), and reinforcement learning algorithms are briefly described. Then, flying ad hoc networks, various types of drones, and their applications, are introduced. Furthermore, the routing process and its challenges are briefly explained in FANET. Then, a classification of reinforcement learning-based routing protocols is suggested for the flying ad hoc networks. This classification categorizes routing protocols based on the learning algorithm, the routing algorithm, and the data dissemination process. Finally, we present the existing opportunities and challenges in this field to provide a detailed and accurate view for researchers to be aware of the future research directions in order to improve the existing reinforcement learning-based routing algorithms.

In the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, some processing is done near data production sites at higher speeds without the need for high bandwidth by combining Fog Computing (FC) and cloud computing. Fog computing offers advantages for real-time systems that require high speed internet connectivity. Due to the limited resources of fog nodes, one of the most important challenges of FC is to meet dynamic needs in real-time. Therefore, one of the issues in the fog environment is the optimal assignment of tasks to fog nodes. An efficient scheduling algorithm should reduce various qualitative parameters such as cost and energy consumption, taking into account the heterogeneity of fog nodes and the commitment to perform tasks within their deadlines. This study provides a detailed taxonomy to gain a better understanding of the research issues and distinguishes important challenges in existing work. Therefore, a systematic overview of existing task scheduling techniques for cloud-fog environment, as well as their benefits and drawbacks, is presented in this article. Four main categories are introduced to study these techniques, including machine learning-based, heuristic-based, metaheuristic-based, and deterministic mechanisms. A number of papers are studied in each category. This survey also compares different task scheduling techniques in terms of execution time, resource utilization, delay, network bandwidth, energy consumption, execution deadline, response time, cost, uncertainty, and complexity. The outcomes revealed that 38% of the scheduling algorithms use metaheuristic-based mechanisms, 30% use heuristic-based, 23% use machine learning algorithms, and the other 9% use deterministic methods. The energy consumption is the most significant parameter addressed in most articles with a share of 19%. Finally, a number of important areas for improving the task scheduling methods in the FC in the future are presented.

Today, the use of safety solutions in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a serious challenge because of novel progress in wireless technologies and the high number of road accidents. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a momentous element in this system because they can improve safety and efficiency in ITS. In this network, vehicles act as moving nodes and work with other nodes within their communication range. Due to high-dynamic vehicles and their different speeds in this network, links between vehicles are valid for a short time interval. Therefore, routing is a challenging work in these networks. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) plays a significant role in developing routing algorithms for VANET. In this paper, we review reinforcement learning and its characteristics and study how to use this technique for creating routing protocols in VANETs. We propose a categorization of RL-based routing schemes in these networks. This paper helps researchers to understand how to design RL-based routing algorithms in VANET and improve the existing methods by understanding the challenges and opportunities in this area.

The cryptocurrency market is very young, volatile, and highly risky. By the end of 2020, a new bull run started, and the prices of several cryptocurrencies reached record-breaking highs. The factors affecting this rise of cryptocurrencies include the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic crisis and the global increase in the inflation rate, as well as the gradual acceptance and adoption of cryptocurrencies by people worldwide. This exploratory research is focused on this last factor, i.e., using cryptocurrency and with it, the associated support of its ecosystem (e.g., mining, staking). A survey was carried out investigating the motivational factors and barriers to investment in cryptocurrency for Czech representatives of Generations Y and Z (18–42 years; n = 468). The geographic scope was nationwide, and quota sampling was used. Notably, this survey was carried out prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, and it is thus not affected by the pandemic and its related economic impacts. The article investigates the dependency between the individual motivational factors and barriers from the perspective of the tendency to take risks (using the risk propensity scale), according to gender and representation of Generations Y and Z. The lack of information on this form of investment is considered as the main barrier to investment in cryptocurrency, with respect to sex and generations. Compared to that, a negative experience with investment in cryptocurrency constitutes the most minor barrier. Respondents that have a tendency to take risks are mostly put off by their lack of experience with investment in general. The main motivational factor for investment in cryptocurrency, with respect to sex and generations, is considered to be the speed of increase in cryptocurrency value. On the other hand, the least encouraging factor is the opportunity to use the high volatility of cryptocurrency for speculative trading. Interestingly, this factor mostly encourages respondents that do not have a tendency to take risks. The findings are discussed, along with the presentation of their implications for practice and the directions of further explanatory research.
