Uncertain transmission delays and sampling periods, parameters uncertainties regarding the power system, load fluctuations, and the intermittent generation of renewable energy sources (RESs) will significantly influence a power system's frequency. This paper designs a robust delay-dependent PI-based load frequency control (LFC) scheme for a power system based on sampled-data control. First, a sampled-data-based delay-dependent LFC model of power system is constructed. Then, by applying the Lyapunov theory and the linear matrix inequality technique, a novel stability criterion is developed for the LFC of the power system by considering the sampling period and transmission delay of the communication network, which ensures that the proposed scheme operates in large sampling periods and under transmission delays. Next, an exponential decay rate (EDR) is introduced to guide the design of a robust PI-based LFC scheme. The LFC scheme with robustness is designed by setting a small EDR. The values of EDR are adjusted by the given robust performance evaluation conditions of parameter uncertainties and $H_\infty$ performance. Finally, case studies are carried out based on a one-area power system and a three-area power system with RESs. Simulation results show that the proposed LFC scheme performs strong robustness against parameter uncertainties regarding the power system and communication network, load fluctuations, and the intermittent generation of RESs.

Load frequency control (LFC) of modern power systems tends to employ open communication networks to transmit measurement/control signals. Under a limited network bandwidth, the continuous and high-sampling-rate signal transmission will be prone to degradation of the LFC performance through network congestion. This brief proposes a decentralized control performance standards (CPSs)-oriented event-triggered (ET) LFC scheme for power systems under constrained communication bandwidth. The proposed scheme comprises the ET LFC scheme and the CPSs-oriented regulation scheme. In the CPSs-oriented regulation scheme, regulation rules are designed to adjust the threshold parameter of the ET LFC scheme based on the North American Electrical Reliability Council (NERC)’s CPS1 and CPS2. The rules generate a larger threshold parameter to lower the triggering frequency in order to reduce unnecessary transmission of measurement/control signals, while ensuring the frequency and tie-lie power of the power systems to meet the required CPS1 and CPS2 instead of the asymptotic stability requirement in the existing research. The reduced transmission of these signals lessens the communication burden. In addition, the decentralized control strategy is used to solve the problems of poor large scalability and computational dimension caused by the centralized control strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated on an IEEE 39-bus test system with renewable energy sources.

This article presents a novel reconstructed model for the delayed load frequency control (LFC) schemes considering wind power, which aims to improve the computational efficiency for PID controllers while retaining their dynamic performance. Via fully exploiting system states influenced by time delays directly, this novel reconstructed method is proposed with a controller isolated. Hence, when the PID controllers are unknown, the stability criterion based on this model can resolve controller gains with less time consumed. For given PID gains, this model can be employed to establish criteria for stability analysis, which can realize the tradeoff between the calculation accuracy and efficiency. The case study is first based on a two-area traditional LFC system to validate the merits of a novel reconstructed model, including accurately estimating the influence of time delay on system frequency stability with increased computational capability. Then, under traditional and deregulated environments, case studies are carried out on the two-area and three-area schemes, respectively. Through the novel reconstructed model, the efficiency of obtaining controller parameters is highly improved while their robustness against the random wind power, tie-line power changes, inertial reductions, and time delays remains almost unchanged.

Time-domain indirect methods based on Lyapunov stability theory and linear matrix inequality techniques (LMIs) have been applied for delay-dependent stability analysis of large-scale load frequency control (LFC) schemes. This paper aims to enhance the numerical tractability of large-scale LMIs by exploiting the special characteristics of the LFC loops. First, in the typical LFC model, only a few delayed states that are directly influenced by transmission delays are distinguished from other normal system states. Hence, an improved reconstruction model is formed, based on which the delay-dependent stability condition is established with the decreased order of the LMIs and decision variables. Then, to further improve the numerical tractability of the developed stability criterion, all weighting matrices required in the augmented Lyapunov functional are enforced to have structural restrictions by proposing an extended symmetry-exploiting technique. Case studies show that the method proposed in this paper significantly improves the calculation efficiency of stability criterion established for multi-area power systems at the cost of only a minor reduction in computational accuracy.

Sintering is the preproduction process of ironmaking, whose products are the basis of ironmaking. How to improve the operating performance of the iron ore sintering process has always been a problem that operators are committed to solve. An operating performance improvement method based on prediction and grade assessment is presented in this article. First, considering the data distribution characteristics of the process, a performance index prediction model based on the Gaussian process regression is built, in which the mutual information analysis method is used to select the inputs of the performance index prediction model. Then, the operating performance grade is assessed by a threshold division method. Next, the operating performance grade guides the control of the burn-through point to improve the operating performance. Finally, experimental verification is performed based on the actual running data. The results show that the proposed method has high prediction accuracy, and it is also significant in improving the operating performance. Therefore, this approach provides an effective solution to predict and improve operating performance.

The operating mode is an essential factor affecting product quality and yield of the sinter ore, which inspires the realization of operating mode recognition. Taking burn-through point (BTP) as the decision parameter of operating mode, an operating mode recognition method based on the fluctuation interval prediction is presented. Firstly, combining the principal component analysis and the fuzzy information granulation method, a fluctuation interval prediction model of the BTP is established through utilizing the Elman neural network. Then, the operating mode classification rules are built according to the data distribution of the BTP in the fluctuation interval. Finally, experiments are executed with the data collected from a factory. The results indicate that it can effectively predict the fluctuation interval of the BTP, and then successfully recognize the operating mode. The proposed method provides a valid reference to control the stable operation of the iron ore sintering process.
