Chance constrained optimal power flow (OPF) has been recognized as a promising framework to manage the risk from variable renewable energy (VRE). In the presence of VRE uncertainties, this paper discusses a distributionally robust chance constrained approximate ac-OPF. The power flow model employed in the proposed OPF formulation combines an exact ac power flow model at the nominal operation point and an approximate linear power flow model to reflect the system response under uncertainties. The ambiguity set employed in the distributionally robust formulation is the Wasserstein ball centered at the empirical distribution. The proposed OPF model minimizes the expectation of the quadratic cost function w.r.t. the worst-case probability distribution and guarantees the chance constraints satisfied for any distribution in the ambiguity set. The whole method is data-driven in the sense that the ambiguity set is constructed from historical data without any presumption on the type of the probability distribution, and more data leads to smaller ambiguity set and less conservative strategy. Moreover, special problem structures of the proposed problem formulation are exploited to develop an efficient and scalable solution approach. Case studies are carried out on the IEEE 14 and 118 bus systems to show the accuracy and necessity of the approximate ac model and the attractive features of the distributionally robust optimization approach compared with other methods to deal with uncertainties.

Uncertain transmission delays and sampling periods, parameters uncertainties regarding the power system, load fluctuations, and the intermittent generation of renewable energy sources (RESs) will significantly influence a power system's frequency. This paper designs a robust delay-dependent PI-based load frequency control (LFC) scheme for a power system based on sampled-data control. First, a sampled-data-based delay-dependent LFC model of power system is constructed. Then, by applying the Lyapunov theory and the linear matrix inequality technique, a novel stability criterion is developed for the LFC of the power system by considering the sampling period and transmission delay of the communication network, which ensures that the proposed scheme operates in large sampling periods and under transmission delays. Next, an exponential decay rate (EDR) is introduced to guide the design of a robust PI-based LFC scheme. The LFC scheme with robustness is designed by setting a small EDR. The values of EDR are adjusted by the given robust performance evaluation conditions of parameter uncertainties and $H_\infty$ performance. Finally, case studies are carried out based on a one-area power system and a three-area power system with RESs. Simulation results show that the proposed LFC scheme performs strong robustness against parameter uncertainties regarding the power system and communication network, load fluctuations, and the intermittent generation of RESs.

As key component for the flexible dc distributed power system, the dual active bridge (DAB)-converter-based solid-state transformer (SST) with high efficiency for a wide operating range is essential. However, with the traditional phase-shift control, high backflow power and current stress will significantly affect the conversion efficiency. In this paper, the backflow power characteristics in both sides of DAB-based SST converters are comprehensively analyzed. On this basis, complete transmission power, backflow power, and peak current mathematical models are established. Then, a minimum-backflow-power-based extended-phase-shift control strategy is proposed with the determination of optimal phase-shift pairs by using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker function for various scenarios. The backflow power and current stress curves with different algorithms are compared. It shows the proposed control can improve the output power regulation flexibility, minimize the backflow power, and improve the efficiency in wide operating range. Finally, a DAB-based SST prototype was developed and the experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Load frequency control (LFC) of modern power systems tends to employ open communication networks to transmit measurement/control signals. Under a limited network bandwidth, the continuous and high-sampling-rate signal transmission will be prone to degradation of the LFC performance through network congestion. This brief proposes a decentralized control performance standards (CPSs)-oriented event-triggered (ET) LFC scheme for power systems under constrained communication bandwidth. The proposed scheme comprises the ET LFC scheme and the CPSs-oriented regulation scheme. In the CPSs-oriented regulation scheme, regulation rules are designed to adjust the threshold parameter of the ET LFC scheme based on the North American Electrical Reliability Council (NERC)’s CPS1 and CPS2. The rules generate a larger threshold parameter to lower the triggering frequency in order to reduce unnecessary transmission of measurement/control signals, while ensuring the frequency and tie-lie power of the power systems to meet the required CPS1 and CPS2 instead of the asymptotic stability requirement in the existing research. The reduced transmission of these signals lessens the communication burden. In addition, the decentralized control strategy is used to solve the problems of poor large scalability and computational dimension caused by the centralized control strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated on an IEEE 39-bus test system with renewable energy sources.
