A double-layer element consisting of a spider-shaped structure on the top layer and a pair of concave arms with a circular ring on the middle layer is proposed for the wideband reflectarray with low cross-polarization characteristics. The unit cell offers a linear and wider phase range of 800∘. Based on the proposed unit cell, an offset-fed reflectarray with an octagonal aperture comprising 6769 unit cells is constructed at 11.725 GHz. The reflectarray offers 1 dB and 3 dB gain bandwidths of 25.2% and 32.3%, respectively, with an operating frequency range of 10–13.85 GHz. A peak gain of 31.2 dBi with an aperture efficiency of 42% is achieved. The cross-polarization levels are less than the co-polarization by 40 dB over the entire operating band.

This paper discusses how to optimize the weighting of individual subarrays to derive the low sidelobe level (SLL) based on quadratic programming (QP) and how to derive QP parameters to ensure that the objective function is composed of the quadratic function form, with the actual number identical to the standard objective function of QP. Next, in order to analyze the SLL, a 24 × 24 phased array antenna was compared with 96 transmit–receive modules (TRMs) attached only to the subarray stage and a phased array antenna with 576 TRMs attached to all radiating elements without a subarray. Optimized weighting was applied to the array antennas with a subarray, and Taylor weighting was applied to the array antennas without a subarray. The number of TRMs used in the phased array antenna with the optimized weighting was reduced by 83.3% compared to the phased array antenna in which TRMs were attached to all radiating elements. The SLL and the half-power beamwidths (HPBWs) of the two antennas were practically identical in a narrow beam-scanning environment. Finally, an array pattern (AP) in which mutual coupling between the radiating elements was considered was calculated to verify the optimized weighting. Moreover, the optimized weighting was applied to CST Microwave Studio (an EM full-wave simulation) to compare the results from the AP calculation and a simulation. It was confirmed that the two results above are largely indistinguishable. The analysis found that the HPBW is 3.6∘ × 3.6∘ and the SLL is −26.18 dB from AP calculations in the boresight direction. When each 5∘ beam was scanned at the azimuth and elevation, the corresponding HPBW values were 3.7∘ × 3.7∘ and 3.7∘ × 3.7∘ and the SLLs were −22.70 dB and −24.44 dB according to the AP calculations.

This study designed a wide-beamwidth pixelated dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) combined with a low-pass filter (LPF) to suppress harmonics. The DRA was designed to create a wide-beam pattern with a pixelated structure. The pixelated DRA was optimized by a genetic-learning particle swarm optimization algorithm. To prevent significant higher-mode radiation and harmonics from occurring in the DRA, an LPF was included in its feeding line. The filter had a seventh-order Chebyshev design, and a hybrid step-impedance filter was proposed by modifying the step-impedance filter for use in narrow spaces behind the ground.

This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a fully integrated digital phased array-based nonlinear radar system. The proposed system employs a bi-static structure, where the transmitter and receiver are physically separated. The transmitter operates at 3–3.2 GHz, while the receiver is designed to capture the second harmonic responses at 6–6.4 GHz. The system consists of 64 channels for both transmission and reception, enabling electronic beam steering through phase shift control. To enhance the beamforming accuracy, a novel transmitter calibration method utilizing an oscilloscope instead of a network analyzer was implemented. The method simplifies synchronization requirements while maintaining precise phase alignment. Performance evaluation of the radar system was conducted through experimental validation in both free-space and concealed conditions, using arbitrary commercial electronic devices as targets. The experimental validation results demonstrated an average range error of 32.3 cm with a range resolution of 37.5 cm. Additionally, multi-target detection was performed using beamforming techniques. In free-space conditions, the radar achieved accurate target localization with angular errors below 1°. In concealed conditions, nonlinear reflections introduced minor localization errors due to clutter. Despite these challenges, the system successfully detected multiple targets by employing a clustering method. To the best of our knowledge, the system presented here is the first demonstration of a fully integrated digital phased array-based nonlinear radar in the open literature.

This study investigated a frequency-selective surface (FSS) that is used to suppress harmonics affecting the performance and accuracy of radar systems. One side of the FSS features a metal grid structure, and when converted into an equivalent circuit model, it exhibits the characteristics of a band-pass filter with an L and C parallel structure. The other side of the FSS features a metallic loop structure and when represented as an equivalent circuit model, it exhibits the characteristics of a band-stop filter with an L and C series structure. The reflection coefficient (S11) and transmission coefficient (S21) of the FSS designed based on theory are compared using a CST studio suite and Keysight’s Advanced Design System. In addition, the transmission coefficients are verified through actual measurements, wherein the measured transmission coefficient is −0.1 dB at 3.0 GHz and approximately −50 dB at the harmonic frequency of 6.0 GHz. The designed FSS is attached to an actual radar system, and the 2D radiation pattern and maximum gain are measured during steering in boresight, azimuth (30∘) and elevation (30∘) directions. At 3.0 GHz, the maximum gain in boresight is 17.25 dB without the FSS and 17.12 dB with the FSS. At 6.0 GHz, the maximum gain is 12.79 dB without the FSS and 2.69 dB with the FSS. At 3.0 GHz, the maximum gain during azimuth steering is 16.13 dB without the FSS and 16.68 dB with the FSS, and the maximum gain during elevation steering is 15.74 dB without the FSS and 15.90 dB with the FSS.
