This paper addresses the challenge of maximizing power capture from new energy sources, including coal, wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, which often lack sufficient inertia support. This deficiency can lead to frequency instability and cascading failures within the power system. A cooperative optimization model for the start‐up of multiple power supplies, designed to enhance the integration of new energy sources while maintaining system stability is proposed. The model incorporates primary frequency modulation and the intrinsic inertia support capabilities of self‐synchronous voltage source field stations, considering dynamic frequency constraints. Additionally, it employs new energy units with primary frequency modulation to provide inertia support during curtailment, particularly when conventional units cannot meet frequency standards due to existing constraints. Extensive simulations and comparative analyses demonstrate that the proposed model improves new energy utilization by up to 37.5% and reduces operational costs by approximately 16%, enhancing overall operational efficiency in high energy consumption scenarios.

For droop control in voltage source converter based multi-terminal HVDC systems, the determination of droop coefficients is a key issue, which directly affects both power distribution and DC control performances. This paper proposes a novel design of droop coefficients considering the requirements of power distribution, DC voltage control and system stability. Considering the power margins of different converters, the ratio relationship among droop coefficients is established. Converters with larger power margins take bigger portion of power mismatch to avoid overload problem. Furthermore, the integral square error of converters DC voltage is adopted as the DC voltage control performance index, and optimization of droop coefficients to achieve coordinated DC voltage control of steady-state deviation and transient variation, is derived. Finally, the constraint of droop coefficients is established to guarantee the DC system stability after power disturbance. Case studies are conducted on the Nordic 32 system with an embedded 4-terminal DC grid to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed droop control scheme.

Electric vehicles (EVs) and small photovoltaic (PV) installations advance residential power grids by lowering charging costs and fostering eco‐friendly operations. Yet, the variable nature of EV charging presents challenges to grid reliability. This research introduces a Monte Carlo‐based simulation for predicting EV charging loads and a systematic charging method that integrates a ‘green electricity’ pricing scheme with a joint optimization model for PV and EV management. By applying an improved ant lion optimizer (IALO) algorithm enriched with differential evolution features, an optimization strategy that markedly enhances grid performance is devised. In a park scenario, this ‘green electricity’ model reduced the mean square error of EV charging load by 11.82%, smoothed the power load curve, and improved grid stability. When compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithms, the IALO algorithm boosted overall revenue by 16.8% and 12.8%, increased PV utilization by 162.3% and 37.1%, and significantly cut carbon emissions by 159.6% and 31.6%, respectively. These outcomes affirm the financial, environmental, and functional benefits of our proposed approach.

Medium voltage direct current (MVDC) distribution system has numerous advantages over medium voltage alternative current (MVAC) distribution system. However, two shortcomings of the existing hybrid direct current circuit breaker (DCCB) with load current switch (LCS), including high construction cost and high operating losses, have constrained the application of existing hybrid DCCBs in MVDC distribution system. To overcome these two shortcomings, a novel multi-port hybrid DCCB with negative voltage source (NVS) has been proposed in this paper. First, the general topology and working principle of the multi-port hybrid DCCB with NVS are presented. Then, focused on current commutation method and economic performance, comparisons between different hybrid DCCBs have been carried out. The analysis shows that by using multi-port hybrid DCCB with NVS, the construction cost could be reduced dramatically and the operating losses could be reduced to be comparable with alternative current circuit breaker (ACCB) which are negligible. In the end, to fill the blank of experimental research, based on the topology of multi-port hybrid DCCB with NVS, a prototype with rating voltage of 2kV has been established, and the test result have verified the multi-port hybrid DCCB with NVS.

Fast and reliable direction criterion is important for the protection of multi-terminal HVDC grid, not only for direction pilot protection, but also for excluding backward fault in singleended protection. The direction criteria based on dc current variation (Δi) or dc current change rate (di/dt) have been used in the dc transmission system. However, the acting reliability is influenced by the high-transition resistance, line distributed capacitance, and so on. Although the direction criteria based on the boundary effect of the dc reactor have excellent operation performance in dc grid, they are only feasibility when the dc reactors are installed on both ends of each dc line. In this paper, the traveling-wave (TW) based direction criterion, which is not based on the boundary components, is proposed for use in multi-terminal HVDC grid, and its applicability is analyzed. To improve the acting sensitivity and reliability of the TW based direction criterion, an improved transient TW based direction criterion is proposed. Finally, simulations based on the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) are carried out to verify the feasibility and superiority of the proposed improved direction criterion.

In the flexible dc grid, the dc fault propagates extremely fast. It requires the dc protection and dc circuit breaker (DCCB) can identify and isolate the fault line very quickly, for the healthy network ride-through, especially in the multi-terminal dc grids. However, the existing protection and DCCB techniques for flexible dc grid can still not match the dc fault propagation speed. Therefore, a novel current-commutation-based fault current limiter (FCL) is proposed in this paper. It can limit the dc fault current effectively, to guarantee the converter continuous operation and healthy network ride-through after dc faults, so the requirement on the protection and DCCB acting speed can be decreased. Compared with the existing fault current limiting methods, the proposed FCL has tiny negative influence on the system transient response speed, operation stability, and DCCB isolating speed. The experiment tests and simulation case studies are carried out to verify the working principle and superiorities of the proposed novel FCL.
