The trends of sustainable development and green agenda transform the production processes, leading industries, and regional markets, and reveal objective contradictions in ensuring the ecological safety of certain territories. This study aims to develop a methodology and assess ecological safety at aggregated system levels, taking into account natural and socioeconomic factors as well as the factor of human capital development with specification of the place of ecological safety in the concept of sustainable development. The objects of empirical research are the EAEU and CIS countries for the period 2010–2019, as well as 85 Russian regions. The scientific research toolkit is based on the methods of structural-logical, economical-statistical, and comparative analyses, and expert judgments. The concepts of sustainable development and human capital and the theory of the national school of ecological safety are analyzed using the systematic approach. The mixed methodological approach showed the interconnection of four approaches of assessing ecological safety (technogenic, environmental, institutional, resource-based). The authors developed a method for assessing ecological safety taking into account the contribution of human capital. The assessment results are typologized and grouped according to the dynamic trend. For the majority of the considered countries, changes in the level of ecological safety correlate with changes in socioeconomic indicators. The same trend is observed when considering the Russian regional formations. The contribution of human capital was recorded to a lesser extent. For several regions, the increased number of objects polluting the environment is accompanied by a decreased volume of polluting emissions into the atmosphere.

The creation of efficient and compact heat exchangers is one of the priority tasks arising during the design of heat and gas supply to industrial and residential buildings. As a rule, finned surfaces and turbulization of heat carrier flows are used to increase the efficiency of heat exchange in heat exchangers. The present paper proposes to use novel materials, namely porous material, in the design of highly efficient heat exchangers. The investigation was carried out experimentally and theoretically. To study the possibility of creating such heat exchangers, a multi-purpose test bench is created. The aim of the study was to assess the intensity of heat transfer in heat exchangers using porous metal. Laboratory tests are carried out as part of the experimental study. In the theoretical study, the classical equation for the change in the heat flux density when the coolant passes through the porous insert was used. As a result, a mathematical model was obtained in the form of a second-order differential equation. Boundary conditions were set and a particular solution was obtained. The results of theoretical calculations were compared with experimental data. The performed study experimentally confirmed the efficiency of using porous metal inserts in the design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The compiled mathematical model allows one to perform engineering calculations of the considered heat exchangers with porous inserts.

Today the world economy is handling an economic crisis caused by the pandemic of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), announced by the WHO, as well as by fluctuations in the international energy market and by the development of “green energy”. The crisis, named the “2020 crisis”, is notable for the divergence of the sectoral dynamics of development, with a declining development trend in some industries and the rapid growth of others. The crisis is etymologically relevant to the energy sector, a sector which is important for the survival and specialization of the Russian Federation. This research is aimed at describing the status and highlighting the socioeconomic effects, constraints (economic and social risks), and “growth points” of the energy sector in the modern realities of the 2020 crisis. Methods. The method of in-depth interview was used. The need for studying expert opinion is based on the fundamental principles of implementation research, according to which the success of state sectoral policy depends on its perception and support by stakeholders. Top managers of energy enterprises acted as the experts (N = 10). The interviews were conducted in April 2020. The method of incremental approximation and coding (open and axial) were used for a high-quality discourse analysis. Results. The conducted study revealed divergence of sectoral dynamics of energy consumption, which is a translation of the immanent features of the 2020 crisis into the energy sector. The detected constraints are reserved development prerequisites of “green energy” and reduced investments in development programs. The potential “growth points” include intensified digitalization of the energy sector and the need for institutional changes in taxation in the energy sector, recognized by experts.

The paper presents the results of testing of a high-performance method for decontaminating sewage, involving combination of ultrasonic and ultraviolet exposure at the final step of water purification aimed at destroying pathogenic microorganisms and thereby preventing the spread of infectious diseases. A variation of the method was developed and patented by the authors and passed the test at one of the most advanced water facilities in Russia which is the Vodokanal of St. Petersburg. The combined unit was manufactured at OOO Novotech-EKO and installed at the South-West Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWTP) of Vodokanal of St. Petersburg. The results of the test showed the efficiency of combined ultraviolet and ultrasonic wastewater treatment, both in terms of intensifying disinfection and in terms of the stability of the plant operation by preventing biofouling and salt deposition on the surface of the lamp casings. The latter fact was the basis for the pilot project of improvement of the existing system of UV wastewater disinfection at the SWTP.

Pneumatic muscle is a new type of actuator that has a number of advantages over pneumatic cylinders, such as higher power-to-weight ratio, smooth speed adjustment, and longer operating life. Pneumatic muscle-based industrial devices can be used in combustible, explosive, and contaminated environments in different industry fields. This article is dedicated to the modeling of pneumatic muscles manufactured by FESTO, a global leader in the production of this type of pneumatic actuators. The existing pneumatic muscle models have several significant drawbacks: they can only be applied to specific types of pneumatic muscles and are inappropriate for FESTO pneumatic muscles, their accuracy is low, and they contain too many adjusting factors. The model presented in this article makes it possible to obtain static characteristics with up to 10% accuracy. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of application of the developed expression for modeling the dynamic characteristics of pneumatic muscle and to develop a comprehensive mathematical model of pneumatic muscle for describing the processes of raising and lowering a load.

In this paper, it is proposed to use the biomass of microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana as a biosorbent for wastewater treatment, as well as an oral sorbent. Biosorbents are capable of adsorbing both organic and inorganic compounds, including heavy metals. The sorption capacity depends on the type of aquatic plant and microalgae strain. The use of microalgae and aquatic plants as biosorbents for pollutant treatments is discussed in the introduction part. The biomass of microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana was chosen as the object of this study. The cultivation conditions (temperature, light, pH and aeration) and the optimal biomass harvesting parameters are presented. Dehydration of biomass was carried out in two ways: IR-drying and freeze-drying. The obtained samples were tested for the ability of the biomass to extract heavy metal ions (zinc, cadmium, zinc, copper) from standard solutions. The initial concentration of heavy metal ions in the working solutions was 10 mg/l. Results show that the lyophilized samples demonstrated up to 99.9% of heavy metal removal efficiency. The paper also presents the composition of Chlorella sorokiniana biomass, in which up to 40.97–41.87% are proteins. The analysis of the amino-acid composition showed a ratio of essential to non-essential amino-acids higher than 0.8. All the above results confirm the possibility of using microalgae biomass as an oral sorbent and as an additive in the production of functional foods.

For estimating the reliability of existing and newly developed circuit diagrams of heat networks, a special procedure is applied. By applying this procedure, which uses such input data as the length and operation time of pipeline segments, it is possible to determine the availability factors and probabilities of failure-free operation for a heat network. The aims of this study are to reveal and consider additional factors in determining the failure rate of heat network pipelines and to develop a new procedure for calculating indicators characterizing the reliability of heat supply to consumers. The failure rate of heat network elements depends, apart from the time they have been in operation, on the pipeline wall residual thickness, corrosion activity of soil, pipeline material, failure of a pipeline batch, other (previous) bursts in the considered segment, conduit flooding (flooding traces), and intersections with other utility lines. Additional factors significantly influencing the heat supply reliability, which, however, have not been included in the currently used procedure, are revealed, and an algorithm for calculating the heat network reliability is developed. The influence of the additional factors on the reliability of heat network operation is evaluated proceeding from the field data presented by regional heat supply companies. The influence of additional factors is taken into account in elaborating the new procedure and algorithm for calculating the heat supply’s reliability indicators. The results from numerical and experimental investigations confirmed the possibility of using the obtained functional dependencies for elaborating a procedure of calculating heat network’s reliability taking external factors into account.
