Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an application of the Internet of Things (IoT) network that connects smart vehicles to the internet, and vehicles with each other. With the emergence of IoV technology, customers have placed great attention on smart vehicles. However, the rapid growth of IoV has also caused many security and privacy challenges that can lead to fatal accidents. To reduce smart vehicle accidents and detect malicious attacks in vehicular networks, several researchers have presented machine learning (ML)-based models for intrusion detection in IoT networks. However, a proficient and real-time faster algorithm is needed to detect malicious attacks in IoV. This article proposes a hybrid deep learning (DL) model for cyber attack detection in IoV. The proposed model is based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). The performance of the proposed model is analyzed by using two datasets—a combined DDoS dataset that contains CIC DoS, CI-CIDS 2017, and CSE-CIC-IDS 2018, and a car-hacking dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher attack detection accuracy of 99.5% and 99.9% for DDoS and car hacks, respectively. The other performance scores, precision, recall, and F1-score, also verify the superior performance of the proposed framework.
The evolution of wireless and mobile communication from 0G to the upcoming 5G gives rise to data sharing through the Internet. This data transfer via open public networks are susceptible to several types of attacks. Encryption is a method that can protect information from hackers and hence confidential data can be secured through a cryptosystem. Due to the increased number of cyber attacks, encryption has become an important component of modern-day communication. In this paper, a new image encryption algorithm is presented using chaos theory and dynamic substitution. The proposed scheme is based on two dimensional Henon, Ikeda chaotic maps, and substitution box (S-box) transformation. Through Henon, a random S-Box is selected and the image pixel is substituted randomly. To analyze security and robustness of the proposed algorithm, several security tests such as information entropy, histogram investigation, correlation analysis, energy, homogeneity, and mean square error are performed. The entropy values of the test images are greater than 7.99 and the key space of the proposed algorithm is 2798. Furthermore, the correlation values of the encrypted images using the the proposed scheme are close to zero when compared with other conventional schemes. The number of pixel change rate (NPCR) and unified average change intensity (UACI) for the proposed scheme are higher than 99.50% and 33, respectively. The simulation results and comparison with the state-of-the-art algorithms prove the efficiency and security of the proposed scheme.

The deposition of ice, snow, pollution or their mixtures on the surface of outdoor insulators may severely affect their performance, resulting in electrical and or mechanical failures. Various preventative methods are used to minimize the problems of ice and pollution build up on the surface of outdoor insulators. In the last few decades, advanced coatings have been developed for better performance of outdoor insulators in contaminated and freezing environments. These advanced coatings offer the advantage of low wettability, high thermal and ultraviolet resistance, self-cleaning, self-healing, low ice adhesion strength and delayed freezing time. It is believed that these benefits will not only increase the reliability of transmission systems but may also reduce the capital cost of transmission infrastructure. This paper presents a detailed review on the properties and applications of superhydrophobic coatings in outdoor high voltage insulation. This review can be beneficial to scientists and engineers in evaluating the performance and durability of superhydrophobic coatings in polluted and freezing conditions. It also highlights the need for standardized tests and procedures for better understanding the behavior of superhydrophobic coatings in different environments and their long-term durability.
Aerial photography involves capturing images from aircraft and other flying objects, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Aerial images are used in many fields and can contain sensitive information that requires secure processing. We proposed an innovative new cryptosystem for the processing of aerial images utilizing a chaos-based private key block cipher method so that the images are secure even on untrusted cloud servers. The proposed cryptosystem is based on a hybrid technique combining the Mersenne Twister (MT), Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), and Chaotic Dynamical Rossler System (MT-DNA-Chaos) methods. The combination of MT with the four nucleotides and chaos sequencing creates an enhanced level of security for the proposed algorithm. The system is tested at three separate phases. The combined effects of the three levels improve the overall efficiency of the randomness of data. The proposed method is computationally agile, and offered more security than existing cryptosystems. To assess, this new system is examined against different statistical tests such as adjacent pixels correlation analysis, histogram consistency analyses and its variance, visual strength analysis, information randomness and uncertainty analysis, pixel inconsistency analysis, pixels similitude analyses, average difference, and maximum difference. These tests confirmed its validity for real-time communication purposes.
Transformers play an essential role in power networks, ensuring that generated power gets to consumers at the safest voltage level. However, they are prone to insulation failure from ageing, which has fatal and economic consequences if left undetected or unattended. Traditional detection methods are based on scheduled maintenance practices that often involve taking samples from in situ transformers and analysing them in laboratories using several techniques. This conventional method exposes the engineer performing the test to hazards, requires specialised training, and does not guarantee reliable results because samples can be contaminated during collection and transportation. This paper reviews the transformer oil types and some traditional ageing detection methods, including breakdown voltage (BDV), spectroscopy, dissolved gas analysis, total acid number, interfacial tension, and corresponding regulating standards. In addition, a review of sensors, technologies to improve the reliability of online ageing detection, and related online transformer ageing systems is covered in this work. A non-destructive online ageing detection method for in situ transformer oil is a better alternative to the traditional offline detection method. Moreover, when combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence, a prescriptive maintenance solution emerges, offering more advantages and robustness than offline preventive maintenance approaches.
The penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the electrical power system has increased significantly over the past years due to increasing global concern about climate change. However, integrating RESs into the power market is highly problematic. The output of RESs such as wind turbines (WTs) and photovoltaics (PVs) is highly uncertain. Their correlation with load demand is not always guaranteed, which compromises system reliability. Distributed energy resources (DERs), especially demand response (DR) programs and energy storage systems (ESSs), are possible options to overcome these operational challenges under the virtual power plant (VPP) setting. This study investigates the impact of using a DR program and battery energy storage system (BESS) on the VPP’s internal electricity market, and also cost-minimization analysis from a utility viewpoint. Three different constrained optimal power flow (OPF) problems are solved such as base case, DR case, and BESS case to determine total incurred costs, locational marginal prices (LMPs), and generator commitments. A scenario tree approach is used to model the uncertainties associated with WTs, PVs, and load demand. The proposed model is investigated on a 14-bus distribution system. The simulation results obtained demonstrate a favorable impact of DR and a BESS on renewable operational challenges.
