The tropospheric vertical column density of NO2 (Trop NO2 VCD) can be obtained using satellite remote sensing, but it has been discovered that the Trop NO2 VCD is affected by uncertainties such as the cloud fraction, terrain reflectivity, and aerosol optical depth. A certain error occurs in terms of data inversion accuracy, necessitating additional ground observation verification. This study uses surface NO2 mass concentrations from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC) sites in Jiangsu Province, China in 2019 and the Trop NO2 VCD measured by MAX-DOAS, respectively, to verify the Trop NO2 VCD product (daily and monthly average data), that comes from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). The results show that the spatial distributions of NO2 in TROPOMI and OMI exhibit a similar tendency and seasonality, showing the characteristics of being high in spring and winter and low in summer and autumn. On the whole, the concentration of NO2 in the south of Jiangsu Province is higher than that in the north. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between the monthly average TROPOMI VCD NO2 and the CNEMC NO2 mass concentration is 0.9, which is greater than the r (0.78) between OMI and CNEMC; the r (0.69) between TROPOMI and the MAX-DOAS VCD NO2 is greater than the r (0.59) between OMI and the MAX-DOAS. As such, the TROPOMI is better than the previous generation of OMI at representing the spatio-temporal distribution of NO2 in the regional scope. On the other hand, the uncertainties of the satellite products provided in this study can constrain regional air quality forecasting models and top-down emission inventory estimation.

The water use efficiency (WUE) is an essential indicator of carbon–water coupling between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, and it is an important parameter for studying ecosystem responses to global climate change. A comprehensive understanding of the water–carbon coupling process in the Loess Plateau can reflect the balance between the “carbon absorption” and “water consumption” in vegetation, which drives the ecosystem succession process. In recent years, scholars have gained a more comprehensive understanding of the WUE and the driving factors of the Loess Plateau. However, there is still a need to study the carbon and water coupling mechanisms of different land use types in the Loess Plateau region. In this article, based on the gross primary productivity (GPP), evapotranspiration (ET), surface cover remote sensing products, and meteorological observation data, the trend of WUE changes for different vegetation types in the Loess Plateau from 2001 to 2020 and the correlations with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), precipitation, and temperature values were analyzed using the Theil–Sen median (SEN) trend analysis method and correlation coefficient analysis method. The spatial distribution patterns of the changes with the drought index showed that the multi-year average WUE value of the Loess Plateau was 1.24 g C mm−1 H2O, and the mean WUE values in different seasons were ranked as follows: summer > autumn > spring. The WUE growth rates of all vegetation types showed a decreasing trend with the increase in drought index, and the size of the WUE response rate for each vegetation type to drought was ranked as follows: grassland > forest > shrub > crop. The annual average WUE increase rate of the Loess Plateau was 0.02 g C mm−1 H2O yr−1, of which 93.36% of the area showed an increasing trend. The NDVI was the dominant factor affecting the spatial and temporal variations in WUE rates in the Loess Plateau, and the correlation between the NDVI and WUE was strongest in summer. In the more arid regional ecosystems, the WUE was negatively correlated with the precipitation and temperature, but in summer the precipitation had a positive effect on the WUE. The correlation of grassland and shrub WUE rates with temperature was more sensitive to the drought index than that of the forest and crop areas, but there was also a threshold effect. Therefore, when vegetation restoration is carried out in arid and semi-arid regions, the carbon and water coupling mechanisms of different vegetation types and the reasonable allocation of regional water resources should be fully considered.

The Grain for Green Project (GGP) has considerably improved the vegetation cover of the Loess Plateau, as well as changed the carbon and water coupling process of local vegetation to a certain extent. Water use efficiency (WUE) is a crucial measure for evaluating ecosystem responses to global climate change and is a key indicator of the carbon–water coupling between terrestrial ecosystems and the environment. A comprehensive understanding of the impact of vegetation reconstruction on WUE on the Loess Plateau is of great significance to the vegetation growth and contribution to sustainable of the Loess Plateau. In recent years, scholars have gained a more comprehensive understanding of the distribution and drivers of WUE on the Loess Plateau. However, through the study of carbon and water coupling in the Loess Plateau, it is found that the effects of different vegetation restoration levels on WUE are still to be studied in depth in terms of spatial and temporal heterogeneity and long timeseries. In this paper, we analyzed the trends of Normalized Difference vegetation cover (NDVI) and WUE from 2001 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020, respectively, to research at the WUE of the vegetation in this area in relation to vegetation restoration. It was found that the Loess Plateau’s vegetation WUE rose from 2001 to 2020 at a rate of 0.023 g C kg−1 H2O per year, and that the increase from 2011 to 2020 was more significant than the growth from 2000 to 2010. The Loess Plateau’s area with a growing trend in vegetation water use rate increased from 77.12% in 2001–2010 to 88.63% in 2011–2020, with the majority of the increased area occurring in the northeastern Inner Mongolia region. After 20 years of the reforestation project, the area where NDVI and WUE increased simultaneously accounted for 71.54% of the Loess Plateau, the area where NDVI increased but WUE decreased accounted for 10.95% of the Loess Plateau, and the area where NDVI increased but WUE decreased accounted for 7.15% of the Loess Plateau. The correlation between temperature precipitation and WUE was not significant for the whole Loess Plateau, further indicating that the increase in vegetation cover was the main reason for the increase in vegetation water efficiency. Therefore, the effect of vegetation cover on WUE should be fully considered when vegetation restoration is carried out on the Loess Plateau.

Urban areas, characterized by dense anthropogenic activities, are among the primary sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx), impacting global atmospheric conditions and human health. Satellite observations, renowned for their continuity and global coverage, have emerged as an effective means to quantify pollutant emissions. Previous bottom-up emission inventories exhibit considerable discrepancies and lack a comprehensive and reliable database. To develop a high-precision emission inventory for individual cities, this study utilizes high-resolution single-pass observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite to quantify the emission rates of NOx. The Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) model is validated for estimating NOx emission strength using real plumes observed in satellite single-pass observations, demonstrating good consistency with existing inventories. Further analysis based on the results reveals the existence of a weekend effect and seasonal variations in NOx emissions for the majority of the studied cities.

Atmospheric profiles are important input parameters for atmospheric radiative transfer models and atmospheric parameter inversions. The construction of regionally representative reference atmospheric profiles can provide basic data for global atmospheric and environmental research. Most reference atmospheric profile databases commonly used lag behind in updating frequency. These databases usually have limited spatial and temporal resolution and differ greatly from the real atmospheric state. To present the real atmospheric state, this article constructs the Global Reference Atmospheric Profile Database (GRAP) based on ACE-FTS satellite products of 2021 and 2022, AIRS satellite products and ERA5 reanalysis data of 2022 u6sing a random forest regression model and a hierarchical mean algorithm. The radiance spectrum of FY-3E HIRAS-II using different profile databases was simulated and compared with the measured spectrum. The results show that GRAP spectral simulations fit better with the measured HIRAS-II spectrum. Comparing the CO2, CH4, O3 and N2O profiles of GRAP, AFGL, MIPAS, RTTOV and NDACC ground station profiles in equatorial, mid-latitude summer and polar winter, the results show that GRAP has high spatial and temporal resolution and better fits the current real atmospheric state. Comparing the temperature profiles of eight regions in China, the results illustrate that GRAP is a better representation of the state of the atmosphere in the Chinese region. GRAP can provide fundamental atmospheric data for radiative transfer studies and atmospheric parameter inversions.

In this study, the spatiotemporal variations in CH4 concentrations in China from 2003 to 2021 are investigated, and their trends are forecasted over the next decade. Based on the seventh edition standard product retrieved by the atmospheric infrared detector (AIRS) at an altitude of 500 hPa, we verified monthly CH4 products using observational data provided by the World Data Center for Greenhouse Gases (WDCGG) from six ground stations in and around China. The correlation coefficients (R values) between the two data sets ranged from 0.68 to 0.92, signifying the ability of AIRS inversion data to represent temporal and spatial changes in surface CH4 concentrations. Additionally, China was classified into three regions (steps) based on terrain, and the changes in CH4 concentrations were assessed from three perspectives: spatial distribution, interannual variation, and seasonal variation. The results revealed that the CH4 concentration decreased with elevation along a topographic gradient, with high-value areas located in the first and second steps, corresponding to the eastern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Over 19 years, the average increase in CH4 concentration has ranged from 65 to 175 ppb. In addition, the CH4 concentrations were higher during summer and autumn and lower during spring and winter. Finally, a SARIMA model was used to predict the near-surface CH4 concentration trend in China over the next ten years, which indicated a continued seasonal increase.
