We describe and demonstrate a liquid level sensor by parallel connection of two liquid level sensors that consists of single-mode-no-core-single-mode fiber structure followed by a fiber Bragg grating. The parallel connection can extend measurement range of liquid level. The structure parameters are optimized and the performance of the sensor is experimentally demonstrated. Results show that the sensor can achieve a linear sensitivity of 0.196 dB/mm within the liquid level range of 0-59 mm and 0.233 dB/mm within 59-117 mm. It has great potential in industrial applications due to its simple structure and extended measurement range, also it can be applied in multi-point measurement.
A humidity sensor based on Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and intracavity sensing of a fiber ring laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A compact humidity-sensitive fiber-optic FPI is developed and inserted in a fiber ring laser. Because the output power of the fiber laser is modulated by the reflection loss of the FPI at different ambient humidity, intracavity humidity sensing is induced. The experiment shows that the relative output power of the fiber laser has a good linear response to ambient humidity from 25 %RH to 95 %RH and the humidity sensitivity of 0.202 dB/%RH is obtained with a narrow 3-dB bandwidth and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Furthermore, the excellent performance of the sensor for remote humidity detection is demonstrated. The sensor also shows a low temperature cross-sensitivity, fast time response, and good stability. The proposed sensor has a great potential in high-capacity sensor network and remote detections.
A relative humidity (RH) sensor based on single-mode–no-core–single-mode fiber (SNCS) structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The agarose gel is coated on the no-core fiber (NCF) as the cladding, and multimode interference (MMI) occurs in the SNCS structure. The transmission spectrum of the sensor is modulated at different ambient relative humidities due to the tunable refractive index property of the agarose gel film. The relative humidity can be measured by the wavelength shift and intensity variation of the dip in the transmission spectra. The humidity response of the sensors, coated with different concentrations and coating numbers of the agarose solution, were experimentally investigated. The wavelength and intensity sensitivity is obtained as −149 pm/%RH and −0.075 dB/%RH in the range of 30% RH to 75% RH, respectively. The rise and fall time is tested to be 4.8 s and 7.1 s, respectively. The proposed sensor has a great potential in real-time RH monitoring.

The principle and design of high-resolution sensors are of great significance in the development of fiber-optic sensors. In this paper, a general method based on intracavity sensing of fiber ring laser (FRL) is proposed for high-resolution measurement and a high-resolution temperature sensing system is experimentally demonstrated. The theoretical model for intracavity sensing of FRL is presented. In the sensing system, a fiber-optic Sagnac loop is inserted into an FRL for temperature measurement, which performs as the filter and sensing head simultaneously. Because the filter characteristics of the Sagnac loop is modulated by temperature, the intracavity intensity-modulated temperature sensing is induced for the output power of the FRL. With the method based on intracavity sensing, the resolution level of the sensing system has been improved from ${\rm{10^{-3}\ \degree C}}$ to ${\rm{10^{-6}\ \degree C}}$ . The stability and measurement errors are also measured. The proposed method can be extensible to similar fiber-optic sensors to improve measurement resolution.
Multimode interferometers based on the single-mode-no-core-single-mode fiber (SNCS) structure have been widely investigated as functional devices and sensors. However, the theoretical support for the sensing mechanism is still imperfect, especially for the cladding refractive index response. In this paper, a modified model of no-core fiber (NCF) based on far from cut-off approximation is proposed to investigate the spectrum characteristic and sensing mechanism of the SNCS structure. Guided-mode propagation analysis (MPA) is used to analyze the self-image effect and spectrum response to the cladding refractive index and temperature. Verified by experiments, the performance of the SNCS structure can be estimated specifically and easily by the proposed method.
