The paper reports an overview of main issues related to hosting capacity and harmonic disturbances caused by EV penetration in a Smart Grid, taking into account renewable energy sources and energy storage systems as well as non-linear loads. A new mixed deterministic and probabilistic method based on algorithms and new control strategies, able to perform EVs charging controls, is presented. The methodology shows as it is possible to achieve high levels of power quality thanks to a pre-evaluation of harmonic disturbance. Studies on real networks are reported in order to carry out indices able to define a preliminary assessment of the network hosting capacity. Suggestions and guidelines about the management of EVs charging stations are proposed and discussed in order to properly integrate them in a smart grid concept.

The use of diesel generators to supply electricity to small remote islands is both costly and environmentally troublesome. On the other hand, small island networks pose peculiar stability and reliability problems when renewable energy sources are added. The paper regards the installation of an hybrid power plant (phortovoltaic, PV, plus lithium battery and synchronous condenser) in Giglio island, to replace existing diesel units. The paper discusses the general overview of the project and presents steady-state and dynamic simulations of the proposed energy system. Results evidence the advantages of the proposed Giglio hybrid power plant over existing diesel generators in terms of reduction of both pollution and energy costs, also allowing to fulfill the N-1 network security criterion. At the same time, results underline the need to install a properly sized flywheel in order to assure the stability of supply.

This paper presents an experimental application of LiFePO4 battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to primary frequency control, currently being performed by Terna, the Italian transmission system operator (TSO). BESS performance in the primary frequency control role was evaluated by means of a simplified electrical-thermal circuit model, taking into account also the BESS auxiliary consumptions, coupled with a cycle-life model, in order to assess the expected life of the BESS. Numerical simulations have been carried out considering the system response to real frequency measurements taken in Italy, spanning a whole year; a parametric study taking into account different values of governor droop and of BESS charge/discharge rates (C-rates) was also performed. Simulations, fully validated by experimental results obtained thus far, evidenced a severe trade-off between expected lifetime and overall efficiency, which significantly restricts the choice of operating parameters for frequency control.

In recent years, an anomalous increase of faults in underground medium voltage (MV) cable lines has been recorded in Italy, especially during summer; the largest number of faults affected cable joints. The assessment of joint thermal stress, both in normal operation and during faults, is paramount. The study presented in this paper focuses on cable heating effects due to short circuit currents flowing through cable screens during ground faults (e.g., in case of cross country faults, CCFs, whose current values are comparable to line-to-line short circuit), considering the contact resistance (CR) between cable screens and copper stocking due to inaccurate joint manufacturing. A thermal model, already developed and discussed by the authors in previous papers, has been extended and applied in this study in order to assess the CR effects in cable and joint heating during failures. Parametric studies have been carried out on a typical cable-joint system, varying fault current and CR values, as well as considering protection schemes normally adopted by distribution system operators (DSOs) in Italian MV distribution grids. Results show that for CR values larger than few milliohms, fault currents due to CCFs are able to overheat the joint well beyond the maximum tolerable temperature of insulation, thus leading to cable failures when the shortest fault clearing times (i.e., 120 ms) are considered.

In recent years, because of increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events, the main stakeholders of electric power systems are emphasizing issues about resilience. Whenever networks are designed and development plans are drawn, this new feature must be assessed and implemented. In this paper, a procedure to evaluate the resilience of a distribution network against flooding threats is presented. Starting from a detailed analysis about the resilience of each asset of the grid, the procedure implements the exploration of the network in order to evaluate the impact of interruptions (e.g., in terms of number of disconnected users) produced by the specific threat; then, it calculates the resilience indices of the whole system. The procedure is applied with respect to the flooding threats, on a real distribution network in the center of Italy (i.e., the distribution network of Terni). Referring to this case study, the proposed method suggests countermeasures able to reduce the impact of flooding events and evaluates their benefits. Results indicate that, at the present time, the network is adequately resilient with respect to flooding events, as demonstrated by the index values. However, the remedial actions identified by the procedure are also able to improve the resilience of the network and, in addition, they are in agreement with the development plan already established by the distribution system operator (DSO).
