In this study, activated carbon derived from mangosteen peel (abbreviated as ACMP) was successfully fabricated. This as-prepared ACMP possessed graphite and had a porous structure with a specific surface area of 419.8554 m2/g. Investigations of the influencing factors on the ciprofloxacin (CIP) adsorption capability of the ACMP based on the static adsorption method showed that: adsorption equilibrium can be achieved in 60 min, the optimal pH for CIP adsorption was a pH of 6, and the optimal ratio between the material mass and solution volume was 3 g/L. The CIP adsorption process of the ACMP follows the Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Elovich, and Redlich–Peterson isotherm adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated according to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model for the CIP of the ACMP was (qmax = 29.76 mg/g). The CIP adsorption process of the ACMP followed the apparent quadratic kinetic equation, as well as spontaneous, endothermic, physical, and chemical adsorption. The adsorption rate was governed by membrane diffusion.
Co-doped Fe-MOF bimetallic organic framework materials at different ratios were synthesized based on the solvothermal method, and we evaluated their morphological characteristics by modern analytical methods such as SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and isotherm of nitrogen adsorption-desorption (BET). The specific surface area of the 0.3 CoFe-MOF sample (280.9 m2/g) is much larger than the Fe-MOF and samples at other ratios. The post-synthesized materials were evaluated for their ability to absorb various dyes, including Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl orange (MO), Congo red (CR), and Rhodamine (RhB), and evaluated for the effects of pH, the initial concentration of the dye solution, time, and dose of adsorbent. The results show that the 0.3 CoFe-MOF material has a high adsorption capacity that is superior to both the original Fe-MOF and the CoFe-MOFs at other ratios. The highest adsorption capacity of MB dye by 0.3 CoFe-MOF reaches up to 562.1 mg/g at pH 10, the initial concentration of MB of 200 mg/L, after 90 min. The charged properties of the dyes and the charged nature of the bimetallic organic frameworks are best demonstrated through the adsorption of dye mixtures. The adsorption efficiency on the mixed system of cationic (MB) and anionic (MO) dyes yielded the highest removal efficiency of 70% and 81%, respectively, after 30 min. Therefore, the research has opened up the potential application of M/Fe-MOF modified materials and CoFe-MOF in organic dyes adsorption in wastewater treatment for environmental protection.
In recent years, photocatalysis has been used as an environmentally friendly method for the degradation of organic pigments in water. In this study, Ce3+/Ce4+-doped ZrO2/CuO as a mixed semiconductor oxide was successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The Ce3+/Ce4+-doped ZrO2/CuO has shown high degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB), and the maximum degradation percentage was observed to be 94.5% at 180 min under irradiation visible light. The photocatalytic activity increases significantly by doping Ce3+/Ce4+ in ZrO2/CuO for MB degradation. Ce3+/Ce4+ doping is shown to reduce the (e-/h+) recombination rate and improve the charge transfer, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity of materials. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR, EDS, BET and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS).
Water purification is becoming one of the most pertinent environmental issues throughout the world. Among common types of water pollution involving heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, textile dyes, personal care products, and other persistent organic pollutants, the pollution of antibiotic drugs is increasingly emerging due to their adverse effects on microorganisms, aquatic animals, and human health. Therefore, the treatment of such contaminants is very necessary to reduce the concentration of antibiotic pollutants to permissible levels prior to discharge. Herein, we report the use of NiFe2O4@C composites from a bimetallic-based metal-organic framework Ni-MIL-88B(Fe) for removal of ciprofloxacin (CFX) and tetracycline (TCC). The effect of production temperatures (600–900 °C), solution pH (2–10), NiFe2O4@C dose (0.05–0.2 g/L), concentration of antibiotics (10–60 mg/L), and uptake time (0–480 min) was investigated systematically. Response surface methodology and central composite design were applied for quadratic models to discover optimum conditions of antibiotic adsorption. With high coefficients of determination (R2 = 0.9640–0.9713), the proposed models were significant statistically. Under proposed optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity for CFX and TCC were found at 256.244, and 105.38 mg/g, respectively. Recyclability study was employed and found that NiFe2O4@C-900 could be reused for up to three cycles, offering the potential of this composite as a good adsorbent for removal of emergent antibiotics.
In this study, ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated by using the hydrothermal method for adsorption of phosphate from wastewater. The obtained ZnO nanorods were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area (BET) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The ZnO materials were applied for adsorption of phosphate from water using batch experiments. The effects of pH (4–10), adsorption time (30–240 min), the amount of adsorbent (0.1–0.7 g/L) and initial concentration of phosphate (147.637–466.209 mg/L) on the adsorption efficiency were investigated. The optimum condition was found at pH = 5 and at an adsorption time of 150 min. The adsorption was fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated to be 769.23 mg/g. These results show that ZnO nanomaterial would highly promising for adsorbing phosphate from water. The adsorption of phosphate on ZnO nanomaterials follows the isothermal adsorption model of Langmuir, Tempkin and Freundlich with single-layer adsorption. There is weak interaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate. Phosphate adsorption of the ZnO nanomaterials follows Lagergren’s apparent second-order kinetic model and was spontaneous and exothermic.

In this study, we investigated the adsorption process of organic Congo red (CR) by M/Fe-MOF (M=Co, Ni) materials. The results of the study show that the optimal adsorption capacity of the materials under the optimal conditions is as follows: Adsorbent weight 0.1 g/L and pH8 for all 3 materials. At the concentration of colorant CR 75 mg/L, the adsorption capacity reached 530 mg/g for Co/Fe- MOF materials; for Ni/Fe-MOF materials, the adsorption capacity reached 560 mg/g, at the colorant concentration CR 140 mg/L; for Fe-MOF materials, the adsorption capacity reached 523 mg/g, at the colorant concentration CR 120 mg/L. The experimental data are consistent with Langmuir and PSO models for both M/Fe-MOF materials (M=Co, Ni). Research results on the reuse process of M/Fe-MOF (M=Co, Ni) materials show that the material is reused 4 times. With this result, it can be considered as the first step to improve the efficiency of pigment adsorption in the current water pollution treatment problem.
