To improve the accuracy of atmospheric visibility (V) prediction based on machine learning in different pollution scenarios, a new atmospheric visibility prediction method based on the stacking fusion model (VSFM) is established in this paper. The new method uses the stacking strategy to fuse two base learners—eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM)—to optimize prediction accuracy. Furthermore, seasonal feature importance evaluations and feature selection were utilized to optimize prediction accuracy in different seasons with different pollution sources. The new VSFM was applied to 1-year environmental and meteorological data measured in Qingdao, China. Compared to other traditional non-stacking models, the new VSFM improved precision during different seasons, especially in extremely low-visibility scenarios (V< 2 km). The TS score of the VSFM was significantly better than that of other models. For extremely low-visibility scenarios, the VSFM had a threat score (TS) of 0.5, while the best performance of other models was less than 0.27. The new method is promising for atmospheric visibility prediction under complex urban pollution conditions. The research results can also improve our understanding of the factors that influence urban visibility.

The aerosol hygroscopic growth (HG) characteristics in coastal areas are very complex, which is one of the main influences on the simulation accuracy of radiation transfer modeling for coastal environments. Previous studies have shown that aerosol HG characteristics are very different in open oceans and inland regions. However, the aerosol HG features in coastal areas are strongly affected by its type. In this work, an aerosol backward trajectory tracing model was used to classify the local aerosol type. Using long-term field campaign data in Qingdao (25 September 2019 to 25 October 2020), the HG characteristics of different types of aerosols (i.e., land source, sea source, and mixed aerosol) under different seasons and different atmospheric environments (i.e., pollution background and clean background) were studied. Quantitative models of aerosol HG factor were established for aerosols from different sources in different seasons and under different pollution background conditions. The major type of local aerosol is terrestrial aerosol, as the marine source only accounts for 10–20%. Seasonal HG characteristics (deliquescence point, DP) of mixed and land source aerosol vary significantly, from around RH = 60% to RH = 85%, while that of the marine aerosol is rather consistent (RH = 80%). When the atmospheric background is relatively clean, the DPs of aerosols from different sources are almost the same (about RH = 80%), but when the pollution is heavy, the DPs of terrestrial aerosols are almost 20% lower than those of marine sources. These models can be directly used to characterize the hygroscopic characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in Qingdao at specific seasons or pollution levels for radiative transfer modeling, remote sensing, and so forth.

Cloud occurrences, vertical structures, and along-track horizontal scales over East Asia are studied using four years (2007–2010) of CloudSat 2B-CLDCLASS-LIDAR data. The CloudSat 2B-CLDCLASS-LIDAR data employs combined CloudSat radar and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) measurements to provide by far the most accurate detections of cloud boundaries and their vertical structures. The mean cloud occurrence frequency over East Asia is 66.3%, which is 13.8% and 21.6% higher than that from the Cloud–Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) level 2 5-km cloud layer product and the CloudSat 2B-GEOPROF product, respectively. Cloud-top heights over East Asia show three local peaks at approximately 1.5 km, 10 km, and 15 km above ground level (AGL), indicating different mid-altitude cloud formation mechanisms from those over the tropics. Significant fractions of low-level cloud, mid-level cloud, and high-level cloud have thicknesses smaller than 0.5 km, indicating that models with vertical resolutions lower than 0.5 km have difficulties resolving those clouds. The average cloud along-track horizontal scale over East Asia is 82.0 km. Probability distribution functions (PDFs) of cloud along-track horizontal scales suggest that approximately 81.2% of the clouds over East Asia cannot be resolved by climate models with a grid resolution of 1°. The results from this study can be used to improve cloud parameterizations in climate models and validate model simulations of clouds over East Asia.

Understanding optical turbulence within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is essential for refining atmospheric motion analyses, enhancing numerical weather prediction models, and improving light propagation assessments. This study develops an optical turbulence model for the boundary layer over the South China Sea (SCS) by integrating multiple observational and reanalysis datasets, including ERA5 data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), radiosonde observations, coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL), and ultrasonic anemometer (CSAT3) measurements. Utilizing Monin–Obukhov Similarity Theory (MOST) as the theoretical foundation, the model’s performance is evaluated by comparing its outputs with the observed diurnal cycle of near-surface optical turbulence. Error analysis indicates a root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 1 and a correlation coefficient exceeding 0.6, validating the model’s predictive capability. Moreover, this study demonstrates the feasibility of employing ERA5-derived temperature and pressure profiles as alternative inputs for optical turbulence modeling while leveraging CDWL’s high-resolution observational capacity for all-weather turbulence characterization. A comprehensive statistical analysis of the atmospheric refractive index structure constant (Cn2) from November 2019 to September 2020 highlights its critical implications for optoelectronic system optimization and astronomical observatory site selection in the SCS region.

In this study, we devised a constraint method, called multi-model ensemble pattern (MEP), to estimate the refractive index structure parameter (Cn2) profiles based on observational data and multiple existing models. We verified this approach against radiosonde data from field campaigns in China’s eastern and northern coastal areas. Multi-dimensional statistical evaluations for the Cn2 profiles and integrated astronomical parameters have proved MEP’s relatively reliable performance in estimating optical turbulence in the atmosphere. The correlation coefficients of MEP and measurement overall Cn2 in two areas are up to 0.65 and 0.76. A much higher correlation can be found for a single radiosonde profile. Meanwhile, the difference evaluation of integrated astronomical parameters also shows its relatively robust performance compared to a single model. The prowess of this reliable approach allows us to carry out regional investigation on optical turbulence features with routine meteorological data soon.

The tropopause is an important transition layer and can be a diagnostic of upper-tropospheric and lower-stratospheric structures, exhibiting unique atmospheric thermal and dynamic characteristics. A comprehensive understanding of the evolution of fine tropopause structures is necessary and primary for the further study of complex multi-scale atmospheric physical–chemical coupling processes in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. A novel method utilizing the bi-Gaussian function is capable of identifying the characteristic parameters of vertical tropopause structures and providing information on double-tropopause (DT) structures. The new method improves the definition of the cold-point tropopause and detects one (or two) of the most significant local cold points by fitting the temperature profiles to the bi-Gaussian function, which defines the point(s) as the tropopause height(s). The bi-Gaussian function exhibits excellent potential for explicating the variation trends of temperature profiles. The results of the bi-Gaussian method and lapse rate tropopause, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization, are compared in detail for different cases. Results indicate that the bi-Gaussian method is able to more stably and obviously identify the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the thermal tropopauses, even in the presence of multiple temperature inversion layers at higher elevations. Moreover, 5 years of historical radiosonde data from China (from 2012 to 2016) revealed that the occurrence frequency and thickness of the DT, as well as the single-tropopause height and the first and second DT heights, displayed significant meridional monotonic variations. The occurrence frequency (thickness) of the DT increased from 1.07 % (1.96 km) to 47.19 % (5.42 km) in the latitude range of 16–50° N. The meridional gradients of tropopause height were relatively large in the latitude range of 30–40° N, essentially corresponding to the climatological locations of the subtropical jet and the Tibetan Plateau.
