Distributed generators (DGs) have a high penetration rate in distribution networks (DNs). Understanding their impact on a DN is essential for achieving optimal power flow (OPF). Various DG models, such as stochastic and forecasting models, have been established and are used for OPF. While conventional OPF aims to minimize operational costs or power loss, the “Dual-Carbon” target has led to the inclusion of carbon emission reduction objectives. Additionally, state-of-the-art optimization techniques such as machine learning (ML) are being employed for OPF. However, most current research focuses on optimization methods rather than the problem formulation of the OPF. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the OPF problem and to propose potential solutions. By delving into the problem formulation and different optimization techniques, selecting appropriate solutions for real-world OPF problems becomes easier. Furthermore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of prospective advancements and conducts a comparative analysis of the diverse methodologies employed in the field of optimal power flow (OPF). While mathematical methods provide accurate solutions, their complexity may pose challenges. On the other hand, heuristic algorithms exhibit robustness but may not ensure global optimality. Additionally, machine learning techniques exhibit proficiency in processing extensive datasets, yet they necessitate substantial data and may have limited interpretability. Finally, this paper concludes by presenting prospects for future research directions in OPF, including expanding upon the uncertain nature of DGs, the integration of power markets, and distributed optimization. The main objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of DGs in DN on OPF. The article aims to explore the problem formulation of OPF and to propose potential solutions. By gaining in-depth insight into the problem formulation and different optimization techniques, optimal and sustainable power flow in a distribution network can be achieved, leading to a more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective power system. This offers tremendous benefits to both researchers and practitioners seeking to optimize power system operations.
Recently, integrated energy systems have become a new type of energy supply model. It is clear that integrated energy systems can improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. However, the use of a battery energy storage system (BESS) as a backup power source will affect the operating costs of a regional integrated energy system (RIES) in different situations. In this paper, a regional integrated energy system including wind turbines, photovoltaics, gas turbines and battery energy storage was introduced. In order to obtain the minimum operation cost, an operation optimization model was built. The schedule plans of each unit were optimized by a moth flame optimization (MFO) algorithm. Finally, three different scenarios were proposed for the simulation optimization. The simulation optimization results show that when the BESS is used as a backup power source, the operating cost of the system and the resulting pollutant emissions are less than the diesel generator (DG) set. Therefore, it is worthwhile to use BESS instead of DG as the backup power source in RIES.
Offshore Wind Power Systems (OWPS) offer great energy and environmental advantages, but also pose significant Operation and Maintenance (O&M) challenges. In this survey, we analyze these challenges and propose some optimization strategies and technologies for OWPS comprehensively. The existing literature review mainly focuses on a certain field of offshore wind power O&M, but lacks a comprehensive introduction to offshore wind power. We consider the energy efficiency, reliability, safety, and economy of OWPS from various aspects, such as offshore wind and wave energy utilization, offshore wind turbine components, and wind power operation parameters, and compare them with onshore wind power systems. We suggest that OWPS can benefit from advanced design optimization, digital twin, monitoring and forecasting, fault diagnosis, and other technologies to enhance their O&M performance. This paper aims to provide theoretical guidance and practical reference for the technological innovation and sustainable development of OWPS.
The lack of inertia and damping mechanism of photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems controlled by maximum power point tracking (MPPT) poses a challenge for the safety and stability of the grid. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) technology has attracted wide attention, since it can make PV grid-connected inverter present the external characteristics of a synchronous generator (SG). Nevertheless, traditional PV-VSG is generally equipped with an energy storage device, which leads to many problems, such as increased costs, space occupation, and post-maintenance. Thus, this paper proposes a two-stage improved PV-VSG control method based on an adaptive-MPPT algorithm. When PV power is adequate, the adaptive-MPPT allows the PV to change the operating point within a stable operation area to actualize system supply-demand, matching in accordance to the load or dispatching power demand; when PV power is insufficient, PV achieves traditional MPPT control to reduce power shortage; simultaneously, improved VSG control prevents the DC bus voltage from falling continuously to ensure its stability. The proposed control approach enables the two-stage PV-VSG to supply power to loads or connect to the grid without adding additional energy storage devices, the effectiveness of which in off-grid and grid-connected modes is demonstrated by typical simulation conditions.
Fault detection in microgrids is of great significance for power systems’ safety and stability. Due to the high penetration of distributed generations, fault characteristics become different from those of traditional fault detection. Thus, we propose a new fault detection and classification method for microgrids. Only current information is needed for the method. Hilbert–Huang Transform and sliding window strategy are used in fault characteristic extraction. The instantaneous phase difference of current high-frequency component is obtained as the fault characteristic. A self-adaptive threshold is set to increase the detection sensitivity. A fault can be detected by comparing the fault characteristic and the threshold. Furthermore, the fault type is identified by the utilization of zero-sequence current. Simulations for both section and system have been completed. The instantaneous phase difference of the current high-frequency component is an effective fault characteristic for detecting ten kinds of faults. Using the proposed method, the maximum fault detection time is 13.8 ms and the maximum fault type identification time is 14.8 ms. No misjudgement happens under non-fault disturbance conditions. The simulations indicate that the proposed method can achieve fault detection and classification rapidly, accurately, and reliably.
The increasing penetration rate of grid connected renewable energy power generation reduces the primary frequency regulation capability of the system and poses a challenge to the security and stability of the power grid. In this paper, a distributed photovoltaic (PV) storage virtual synchronous generator system is constructed, which realizes the external characteristics of synchronous generator/motor. For this kind of input/output bidirectional devices (e.g., renewable power generation/storage combined systems, pumped storage power stations, battery energy storage systems, and vehicle-to-grid electric vehicles), a synthesis analysis method for system power-frequency considering source-load static frequency characteristics (S-L analysis method) is proposed in order to depict the system’s power balance dynamic adjustment process visually. Simultaneously, an inertia matching method is proposed to solve the problem of inertia matching in the power grid. Through the simulation experiment in MATLAB, the feasibility of the distributed PV storage synchronous virtual machine system is verified as well as the effectiveness of S-L analysis method and inertia matching method.
