Artificial intelligence (AI) is an evolving set of technologies used for solving a wide range of applied issues. The core of AI is machine learning (ML)—a complex of algorithms and methods that address the problems of classification, clustering, and forecasting. The practical application of AI&ML holds promising prospects. Therefore, the researches in this area are intensive. However, the industrial applications of AI and its more intensive use in society are not widespread at the present time. The challenges of widespread AI applications need to be considered from both the AI (internal problems) and the societal (external problems) perspective. This consideration will identify the priority steps for more intensive practical application of AI technologies, their introduction, and involvement in industry and society. The article presents the identification and discussion of the challenges of the employment of AI technologies in the economy and society of resource-based countries. The systematization of AI&ML technologies is implemented based on publications in these areas. This systematization allows for the specification of the organizational, personnel, social and technological limitations. This paper outlines the directions of studies in AI and ML, which will allow us to overcome some of the limitations and achieve expansion of the scope of AI&ML applications.
The Republic of Kazakhstan has significant deposits of fossil fuels and is one of the largest energy producers among the countries of Central Asia. At the same time, The Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the richest countries of the world in terms of renewable resources, evaluated to over 1000 billion kWh/year. The application of the renewable energy sources (RES), both on a large scale and at the level of a single household, ensures the transformation of the energy system to a “green state”. However, these initiatives should be substantiated by relevant supportive information to promote transformation of the country's economy to a qualitative ecological state. The paper covers developed multi-criteria decision-making system (MCDM) and software tools for processing of spatial heterogeneous data which could be applied for evaluation of the RES potential. The developed system serves to evaluate the potential of usable RES as it allows the assessment of a territory of the country in terms of installing photovoltaic and wind generators. A feature of the proposed MCDM is the use of an analytical hierarchical process (AHP) in combination with the Bayesian approach, which allows obtaining two complementary assessments of the territory areas. The method allows a rough estimate in an event of lack of data. The verification performed based on the available data on the installed solar and wind power stations shows that the system gives a relatively small root-mean-square error within 15%.
The media plays an important role in disseminating facts and knowledge to the public at critical times, and the COVID-19 pandemic is a good example of such a period. This research is devoted to performing a comparative analysis of the representation of topics connected with the pandemic in the internet media of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. The main goal of the research is to propose a method that would make it possible to analyze the correlation between mass media dynamic indicators and the World Health Organization COVID-19 data. In order to solve the task, three approaches related to the representation of mass media dynamics in numerical form—automatically obtained topics, average sentiment, and dynamic indicators—were proposed and applied according to a manually selected list of search queries. The results of the analysis indicate similarities and differences in the ways in which the epidemiological situation is reflected in publications in Russia and in Kazakhstan. In particular, the publication activity in both countries correlates with the absolute indicators, such as the daily number of new infections, and the daily number of deaths. However, mass media tend to ignore the positive rate of confirmed cases and the virus reproduction rate. If we consider strictness of quarantine measures, mass media in Russia show a rather high correlation, while in Kazakhstan, the correlation is much lower. Analysis of search queries revealed that in Kazakhstan the problem of fake news and disinformation is more acute during periods of deterioration of the epidemiological situation, when the level of crime and poverty increase. The novelty of this work is the proposal and implementation of a method that allows the performing of a comparative analysis of objective COVID-19 statistics and several mass media indicators. In addition, it is the first time that such a comparative analysis, between different countries, has been performed on a corpus in a language other than English.
A log data analysis plays an important role in the uranium mining process. Automating this analysis using machine learning methods improves the results and reduces the influence of the human factor. In particular, the identification of reservoir oxidation zones (ROZs) using machine learning allows a more accurate determination of ore reserves, and correct lithological classification allows the optimization of the mining process. However, training and tuning machine learning models requires labeled datasets, which are hardly available for uranium deposits. In addition, in problems of interpreting logging data using machine learning, data preprocessing is of great importance, in other words, a transformation of the original dataset that allows improving the classification or prediction result. This paper describes a uranium well log (UWL) dataset generated with the employment of floating data windows and designed to solve the problems of identifying ROZ and lithological classification (LC) on sandstone-type uranium deposits. Comparative results of the ways of solving these problems using classical machine learning methods and ensembles of machine learning algorithms are presented. It has been shown that an increase in the size of the floating data window can improve the quality of ROZ classification by 7–9% and LC by 6–12%. As a result, the best-quality indicators for solving these problems were obtained, f1_score_macro = 0.744 (ROZ) and accuracy = 0.694 (LC), using the light gradient boosting machine and extreme gradient boosting, respectively.
Monitoring of the water level and river discharge is an important task, necessary both for assessment of water supply in the current season and for forecasting water consumption and possible prevention of catastrophic events. A network of ground hydrometric stations is used to measure the water level and consumption in rivers. Rivers located in sparsely populated areas in developing countries of Central Asia have a very limited hydrometric network. In addition to the sparse network of stations, in some cases remote probing data (virtual hydrometric stations) are used, which can improve the reliability of water level and discharge estimates, especially for large mountain rivers with large volumes of suspended sediment load and significant channel instability. The aim of this study is to develop a machine learning model for remote monitoring of water levels in the large transboundary (Kazakhstan-People’s Republic of China) Ili River. The optical data from the Sentinel-2 satellite are used as input data. The in situ (ground-based) data collected at the Ili-Dobyn gauging station are used as target values. Application of feature engineering and ensemble machine learning techniques has achieved good accuracy of water level estimation (Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) >0.8). The coefficient of determination of the model results obtained using cross-validation of random permutations is NSE = 0.89. The method demonstrates good stability under different variations of input data and ranges of water levels (NSE > 0.8). The average absolute error of the method ranges from 0.12 to 0.18 meters against the background of the maximum river water level spread of more than 4 meters. The obtained result is the best current result of water level prediction in the Ili River using the remote probing data and can be recommended for practical use for increasing the reliability of water level estimation and reverse engineering of data in the process of river discharge monitoring.
The accuracy of classification and localization of plants on images obtained from the board of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is of great importance when implementing precision farming technologies. It allows for the effective application of variable rate technologies, which not only saves chemicals but also reduces the environmental load on cultivated fields. Machine learning algorithms are widely used for plant classification. Research on the application of the YOLO algorithm is conducted for simultaneous identification, localization, and classification of plants. However, the quality of the algorithm significantly depends on the training set. The aim of this study is not only the detection of a cultivated plant (soybean) but also weeds growing in the field. The dataset developed in the course of the research allows for solving this issue by detecting not only soybean but also seven weed species common in the fields of Kazakhstan. The article describes an approach to the preparation of a training set of images for soybean fields using preliminary thresholding and bound box (Bbox) segmentation of marked images, which allows for improving the quality of plant classification and localization. The conducted research and computational experiments determined that Bbox segmentation shows the best results. The quality of classification and localization with the application of Bbox segmentation significantly increased (f1 score increased from 0.64 to 0.959, mAP50 from 0.72 to 0.979); for a cultivated plant (soybean), the best classification results known to date were achieved with the application of YOLOv8x on images obtained from the UAV, with an f1 score = 0.984. At the same time, the plant detection rate increased by 13 times compared to the model proposed earlier in the literature.
