There is an increased interest in high entropy alloys as a result of the special possibilities of improving the mechanical, physical or chemical characteristics resulting from metallic matrices made of different chemical elements added in equimolar proportions. The next step in developing new alloys is to determine the cutting conditions to optimize manufacturing prescriptions. This article presents a series of tests performed to estimate the machining behavior of the Al0.6CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy. The effects of temperature during machining, wear effects on the cutting tool, evolution of the hardness on the processed areas, cutting force components and resultant cutting force for high entropy alloy (HEA) in comparison with 304 stainless steel, scrap aspect and machined surface quality were analyzed to have an image of the HEA machinability. In terms of cutting forces, the behavior of the HEA was found to be about 59% better than that of stainless steel. XRD analysis demonstrated that the patterns are very similar for as-cast and machined surfaces. The wear effects that appear on the cutting edge faces for the tool made of rapid steel compared to carbide during HEA machining led to the conclusion that physical vapor deposition (PVD)-coated carbide inserts are suitable for the cutting of HEAs.

Considering the future trends of biomaterials, current studies are focused on the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties of new materials that need to be considered in the process of strengthening alloys with additive non-toxic elements. Many kinds of titanium alloys with different biocompatible elements (Mo, Si, Zr, etc.,) have been recently developed for their similar properties with human bone. Four new different alloys were obtained and investigated regarding their microstructure, mechanical, chemical, and biological behavior (in vitro and in vivo evaluation), the alloys are as follows: Ti15Mo7Zr15Ta, Ti15Mo7Zr15Ta0.5Si, Ti15Mo7Zr15Ta0.75Si, and Ti15Mo7Zr15Ta1Si. There were changes with the addition of the silicon element such as the hardness and the modulus of elasticity increased. An MTT assay confirmed the in vitro cytocompatibility of the prepared alloys.

Depending on the properties required for the medical instruments, compared with the classical materials, the high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a versatile option. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements have been performed on AlxCoCrFeNi-type high-entropy alloys with various concentrations of Al content (x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) in order to characterize their passive film and corrosion resistance at 37 °C under infectious simulated physiological conditions (Ringer´s solution acidulated with HCl) at pH = 3. The impedance spectra were obtained at different potential values between −0.7 and +0.7 V vs. SCE. Analysis of the impedance spectra was carried out by fitting different equivalent circuits to the experimental data. Two equivalent circuits, with one time constant and two time constants respectively, can be satisfactorily used for fitting the spectra: one time constant represents the characteristics of the compact passive film, and the second one is for the porous passive film. With the decreasing of Al content, the obtained EIS results are correlated with the evolution of the microhardness and microstructure, which is characterized by Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDAX). It can be observed for all alloys that the resistance of the passive film is very high and decreases with the potential: the very high resistance of the passive film implies a high corrosion resistance, which can be assigned to the formation of the protective oxide layer and demonstrates that the analyzed alloys fulfill the prerequisites for their use as new materials for the manufacturing of medical instruments.

Ti-based alloys are widely used in medical applications. When implant devices are used to reconstruct disordered bone, prevent bone resorption and enhance good bone remodeling, the Young’s modulus of implants should be close to that of the bone. To satisfy this requirement, many titanium alloys with different biocompatible elements (Zr, Ta, Mo, Si etc.) interact well with adjacent bone tissues, promoting an adequate osseointegration. Four new different alloys were obtained and investigated regarding their microstructure, mechanical, chemical and biological behavior (in vitro and in vivo evaluation), as follows: Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta, Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta0.5Si, Ti20Mo7Zr15Ta0.75Si and Ti20Mo7Zr15TaSi. 60 days after implantation, both in control and experimental rabbits, at the level of implantation gap and into the periimplant area were found the mesenchymal stem cells which differentiate into osteoblasts, then osteocytes and osteoclasts which are involved in the new bone synthesis and remodeling, the periimplant fibrous capsule being continued by newly spongy bone tissue, showing a good osseointegration of alloys. A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay confirmed the in vitro cytocompatibility of the prepared alloys.
