Purpose: This paper aims to present the methodology to determine Archard’s wear coefficient. By applying this coefficient into the numerical simulation of wear, it is possible to predict wear without long lasting and usually expensive experiments. Design/methodology/approach: To determine necessary particles of Archard’s equation and calculate wear coefficient K, an experimental investigation is proposed. Afterwards, the wear simulation is executed in FEM software ANSYS 18.1. Analytical method is offered to determine worn volume for cylinder-in-cylinder contact, based on “inclination” of inner cylinder. Findings: Comparing the value of Archard’s coefficient obtained by this experimental investigation with the values from the literature for the similar materials, high correlation is noted. Furthermore, numerically calculated contact pressure is confirmed with analytical method. Trend of pressure decrease due to wearing process, as well as due to increase of contact surface is observed. Practical implications: Since the prediction of the wear is closely related to the life cycle assessment of bearings, and the machines in general, it has significant practical importance for designers. Originality/value: Determination of Archard’s coefficient is usually performed by conventional pin-on-disk tribometers. This methodology offers a different approach for the determination of Archard’s wear coefficient for cylinder-in-cylinder contact, which is convenient for shaft-sliding bearing contact.

This review paper is an homage to Arvid Palmgren’s pioneering paper on rolling bearing service life to highlight its relevance a century later. It follows the evolution of bearing service life theory from Palmgren’s fundamental research to the contemporary international standard ISO 281. Palmgren’s theory, based on the previously published papers of Stribeck and Hertz, laid the basis for the later development of bearing service life assessment methodology. Based on the Weibull theory of probability of damage, Lundberg and Palmgren introduced stochastic elements to explain the effect of reliability on bearing service life prediction. Harris and Ioannides, who made a significant contribution to the revision of the international standard on rolling bearing load rating and rating life are mentioned as well. Zaretsky’s critical analysis also was not neglected in this review, due to a different approach respecting the original influence of material properties and bearing performances. Despite standardization, ongoing research by leading advanced bearing industries and academic institutions continues to refine methodologies for service life assessment. Through a comprehensive review and analysis, this paper offers insight into the current state of bearing service life theory, highlighting the collaborative efforts bringing progress in this field.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lubrication quality of porous sliding bearings, starting from the bearing model and in combination with experimental results aimed at analyzing the lubrication regimes of different working conditions. The separation between the surfaces by the lubricant layer is what determines the regime. The quality and type of lubrication regime are determined by parameters in the mathematical model including typically speed, load, motion, materials, environment, etc., which have an impact on friction. Besides those elements, important parameters such as coefficient of friction (COF) and working temperature are to be measured due to experimental investigations to detect an equilibrium working state. The self-lubrication mechanism in porous metal bearings improves their service life and lubrication processes; however, the COF still varies within a wide interval. This variability can be understood, considering that during bearing operation it operates within a broad range of lubrication regimes. Those findings are explained in the paper by using a combination of calculated parameters according to the bearing model and in combination with our own results of experimental investigations. With the obtained results for particular working conditions, the authors are trying to explain, in the form of a diagram with the limit line as an important outcome of the work, that the lubrication regime for porous metal bearings could arise from boundary lubrication (BL) close to hydrodynamic lubrication (HDL).

The high-speed reduction in a relatively small space, coupled with a torque load capacity larger than that of any other standard transmission, positions planetary gear systems as one of the most vital components in gearing applications today. Structural analysis of a gear train is conducted using CATIA software, employing strain full tensor distribution analysis through Finite Element Method (FEM). The analysed natural frequencies and vibration modes of each component provide essential information for fine-tuning resonances away from the assembly's operating speeds. Based on these results, component dimensions are optimized using CATIA's optimizer module to achieve a structurally compact gearbox design. The minimization of gearbox mass serves as an objective function, with gear dimensions as variable parameters constrained by ultimate bending tooth root stress, safety factors, and critical frequencies expressed as inequalities. Structural optimization results are presented in tables, comparing initial natural frequencies with those obtained from the optimized solution. The final optimized design for each gear train component is also presented and discussed in the paper's concluding section. In conclusion, the paper outlines its primary objectives, summarizing key findings and proposing new ideas for further research to enhance and optimize planetary gear transmissions in practical applications.
