This article analyzes the effect of electrolytic plasma nitriding on the performance of medium-carbon steel 45 under increased mechanical loads and in aggressive environments. Nitrided samples in carbamide electrolytes, both with and without the addition of ammonium nitrate, were compared to the initial material. SEM with EDX and XRD analysis was used to examine the microstructure and phase composition of nitrided samples. Wear resistance was studied using the ‘ball-on-disk’ method and Vickers microhardness testing, while corrosion resistance was studied using potentiodynamic polarization curves. The study results show that the sample without ammonium nitrate demonstrated better mechanical and corrosion properties due to a more homogeneous and denser nitride layer, approximately 10 µm thick, containing phases FeN and Fe4N. Its wear resistance doubled compared to that of the initial sample. The sample treated in an electrolyte with the addition of ammonium nitrate demonstrated a higher current density (2.8672 × 10−5 A/cm2) and a lower corrosion potential (−0.565 V) compared to the initial sample (i_corr = 1.8971 × 10⁻5 A/cm2, E_corr = −0.480 V) and the sample without ammonium nitrate (i_corr = 1.7315 × 10−5 A/cm2, E_corr = −0.376 V). This is due to the formation of an uneven nitride layer and the presence of microcracks on the surface.

This study introduces a dataset of crop imagery captured during the 2022 growing season in the Eastern Kazakhstan region. The images were acquired using a multispectral camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (DJI Phantom 4). The agricultural land, encompassing 27 hectares and cultivated with wheat, barley, and soybean, was subjected to five aerial multispectral photography sessions throughout the growing season. This facilitated thorough monitoring of the most important phenological stages of crop development in the experimental design, which consisted of 27 plots, each covering one hectare. The collected imagery underwent enhancement and expansion, integrating a sixth band that embodies the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values in conjunction with the original five multispectral bands (Blue, Green, Red, Red Edge, and Near Infrared Red). This amplification enables a more effective evaluation of vegetation health and growth, rendering the enriched dataset a valuable resource for the progression and validation of crop monitoring and yield prediction models, as well as for the exploration of precision agriculture methodologies.

This paper presents the results of research on the effect of electrolyte-plasma hardening on tribological and mechanical properties of hollow needles of 12Kh18N10Т steel applicators for liquid fertilizer application. For the application of liquid fertilizers for processing and testing, the hollow needles of the applicator are made of 12Kh18N10Т steel of cylindrical shape with a diameter of 20 mm. To ensure uniformity of the hardening process, the part was rotated clockwise during the entire procedural cycle. To reveal the influence of the sample rotation speed on the uniform surface hardening, an experiment was conducted for three applicators with rotation speeds of 4, 6, and 8 rev/min. As a result of electrolyte-plasma surface hardening (EPSH), the phase composition of the specimen's surface is characterized by the presence of austenite (γ-Fe) and ferrite (α-Fe). It is revealed that the maximum value of microhardness after EPSH is 2 times higher than the initial value. According to the results of the performed works, the contract on application of tests in field conditions and revealing of perspectivity of needle applicators for liquid fertilizers application was concluded.

Temperate grasslands are called the breadbaskets of the world. Due to most continental climate conditions, humus-rich soils have been developed. These soils are very well suited for grain production. This is why extensive conversions from natural steppe to arable land have been implemented in this biome. The Kulunda Steppe, in Southwest Siberia and Central Asia, occupies large parts of the driest regions of the Eurasian Steppe Belt. It was one of the sites of the Virgin Land Campaign realized in the former Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. Intensive agricultural practices have caused significant soil degradation, mainly through humus loss and soil erosion. This results in the degradation of organic carbon, altering the physical and chemical structure of the chestnut soils and impacting their water storage capacity. Against the background of climatic changes, a further intensification of these processes and conditions is to be expected. To stabilize soil carbon and optimize moisture utilization, it is necessary to extensively introduce worldwide experiences in conservation cropping technologies (such as no-till, min-till, and direct seeding) in the area. This study aimed to determine the effects of different cropping systems on soil water storage and water availability. The study’s initial hypothesis was that the soil conservational cropping system has advantages against the traditional deep tillage (24 cm). This hypothesis was based on extensive global experience studying the effects of different agricultural management systems on soil-water balance. In 2013–2016, an experiment was conducted for the first time in the Kulunda steppe to instrumentally measure soil moisture and matrix potential at 30–60–120 cm depth under traditional and conservation technology using innovative meteorological and soil hydrological stations. Statistically significant advantages of no-till over deep tillage (24 cm) in terms of moisture retention were found, confirming the hypothesis of this study. Besides, this groundbreaking study reveals new possibilities for soil monitoring in the region. The acquired data are applicable for predictive models using remote sensing. Moreover, the results on the management effects for the soil water balance provide basic approaches to soil water monitoring, offering important data for evaluating model results and remote sensing products for the region.

Electrolytic plasma nitriding is an attractive chemical heat treatment used to improve the surface properties of steel by implementing nitrogen saturation. This method is widely applied to steel and iron-based alloys operating under various operating conditions. In this work, using liquid-phase plasma nitriding technology, a nitrided layer was obtained on the surface of 40CrNi steel in electrolytes of different concentrations. The microstructure and phase composition of the nitrided layer were investigated and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and we performed Vickers hardness and wear resistance tests using the ball-on-disc method. The microhardness and wear resistance of nitrided 40CrNi steel were significantly improved due to the lubricating properties of the ε-Fe2N phase formed on its surface.

This study investigates the thermal response and surface modification of low-carbon manganese-alloyed 20GL steel during electrolytic plasma hardening. The objective was to evaluate the feasibility of surface hardening 20GL steel—traditionally considered difficult to quench—by combining high-rate surface heating with rapid cooling in an electrolyte medium. To achieve this, a transient two-dimensional heat conduction model was developed to simulate temperature evolution in the steel sample under three voltage regimes. The model accounted for dynamic thermal properties and non-linear boundary conditions, focusing on temperature gradients across the thickness. Experimental temperature measurements were obtained using a K-type thermocouple embedded at a depth of 2 mm, with corrections for sensor inertia based on exponential response behavior. A comparison between simulation and experiment was conducted, focusing on peak temperatures, heating and cooling rates, and the effective thermal penetration depth. Microhardness profiling and metallographic examination confirmed surface strengthening and structural refinement, which intensified with increasing voltage. Importantly, the study identified a critical cooling rate threshold of approximately 50 °C/s required to initiate martensitic transformation in 20GL steel. These findings provide a foundation for future optimization of quenching strategies for low-carbon steels by offering insight into the interplay between thermal fluxes, surface kinetics, and process parameters.
