This review paper presents a detailed analysis of the influence of high-velocity oxygen–fuel (HVOF) spraying parameters on the microstructure formation and performance characteristics of Cr3C2-NiCr coatings. Key HVOF parameters, including the spray distance, oxygen-to-fuel ratio, powder feed rate, and spraying temperature, are examined in relation to their impact on coating properties. Structural parameters such as density, porosity, adhesive strength, and microhardness, which determine the mechanical behavior of the coating, are analyzed. Special attention is paid to wear resistance mechanisms, adhesion to the substrate, and resistance to fatigue failure. Additionally, the thermal stability of the coatings, their coefficient of thermal expansion, and oxidation resistance are investigated. This study also evaluates the morphology and phase composition of the coatings under different HVOF spraying conditions. An overview of modern diagnostic techniques, such as electron microscopy and spectroscopy, is provided. Compared to traditional surface treatment methods, HVOF spraying offers superior coating density, higher adhesion strength, and enhanced wear and corrosion resistance, making it an effective solution for extending the service life of components. Based on the findings, this paper highlights promising applications of Cr3C2-NiCr coatings in the aviation, power engineering, and mechanical engineering industries, where high wear resistance and thermal stability are crucial.

The paper considers the research results of structural-phase state and tribological characteristics of detonation coatings based on Ti–Si–C, obtained at different filling volumes of the explosive gas mixture barrel of a detonation gun. The results analysis indicates that the phase composition and properties of detonation coatings strongly depend on the technological parameters of spraying. With an increase of the explosive mixture in the filling volume of the detonation barrel up to 70% of the coatings consist mainly of the TiC phase, because high temperature leads to a strong decomposition of Ti3SiC2 powders. Thus, the XRD results confirm that at 70% of the explosive gas mixture’s filling volume, partial decomposition and disintegration of the powders occurs after detonation spraying. We established that detonation coatings based on titanium carbosilicide obtained at the explosive gas mixture’s filling volume at 60% are characterized by high wear resistance and adhesive strength. Thermal annealing was performed after spraying in the temperature range of 700–900 °C for 1 h to reduce microstructural defects and improve the Ti–Si–C coating characteristics. As a result of the heat treatment in the Ti–Si–C system at 800 °C, we observed that an increase in the volume fraction of the Ti3SiC2 and TiO2 phases led to a 2-fold increase in microhardness. This means that the after-heat-treatment can provide a sufficient reaction time for the incomplete reaction of the Ti–Si–C (TSC) coating during the detonation gun spraying. Thus, annealing can provide an equal distribution of elements in the coatings.

This paper reviews recent advances in the synthesis of cobalt-free high-strength tungsten carbide (WC) composites as sustainable alternatives to conventional WC-Co composites. Due to the high cost of cobalt, limited supply, and environmental concerns, researchers are exploring nickel, iron, ceramic binders, and nanocomposites to obtain similar or superior mechanical properties. Various synthesis methods such as powder metallurgy, encapsulation, 3D printing, and spark plasma sintering (SPS) are discussed, with SPS standing out for its effectiveness in densifying and preventing WC grain growth. The results show that cobalt-free composites exhibit high strength, wear and corrosion resistance, and harsh environment stability, making them viable competitors for WC-Co materials. The use of nickel and iron with SPS is shown to enable the development of environmentally friendly, cost-effective materials. It is emphasized that microstructural control and phase management during sintering are critical to improve a material’s properties. The application potential of these composites covers mechanical engineering, metallurgy, oil and gas, and aerospace, emphasizing their broad industrial relevance.

Composite coatings based on chromium carbide (Cr3C2) and nickel–chromium alloys (NiCr) are widely used due to their unique properties, including high heat resistance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. This article studies the structural–phase and physical–mechanical characteristics of Cr3C2-NiCr composite coatings applied by high-velocity oxygen fuel to E110 zirconium alloy. The HVOF method was chosen to create coatings with high adhesion to the substrate and excellent performance properties. Analysis of the microstructure of the cross-section showed the thickness of the modified surface layer from 75 to 110 μm, depending on the processing modes. Energy dispersive X-ray spectral analysis revealed the presence of elements Cr, Ni, C and O in the coating composition. Structural–phase analysis confirmed the formation of coatings with a high concentration of Cr3C2 carbide particles and NiCr (nickel–chromium) phases. The resulting composite coatings based on Cr3C2-NiCr had a significantly high microhardness, ranging from HV 1190 to HV 1280, and the friction coefficient varied in a significant range from 0.679 to 0.502 depending on the processing conditions. The maximum adhesion strength was 9.19 MPa per square centimeter.

Here, we report a simple and versatile synthesis of low-dimensional ZnO nanosheet (NS) arrays modified with Fe2O3 (hematite) to assemble photocatalytic coatings and non-enzymatic glucose sensors. Photocatalytic coatings made of widespread elements (zinc and iron) were tested for methylene blue (MB) dye decolorization under ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) irradiation. A comparative study of unmodified and modified ZnO NS photocatalysts revealed a significant decrease in the dye concentration in 180 min when ZnO/Fe2O3 arrays were used. Size dependence efficiency of the hematite layer deposited onto ZnO is presented. A study of the sensitivity of biosensors made of ZnO nanostructures and ZnO/Fe2O3 nanocomposites for glucose detection showed an improvement in sensitivity with increased Fe2O3 thickness. The structure and morphology of low-dimensional coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The optical properties of nanoarrays showed a red shift of absorption after modifying ZnO with hematite layers, which holds good promise for expanding photocatalytic activity in the visible region.
