Joan Nicolas-Apruzzese was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He received an M.S. degree in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 2008 and 2013, respectively.
From 2015 to 2020, he worked as a part-time Assistant Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of UPC. From 2020 to 2023, he worked as an Associate Professor of Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya. Since 2023, he has worked as an Associate Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of UPC.
Since 2008, he has been a researcher in the Power Electronics Research Group, UPC. His main research topics are the definition of new multilevel converter topologies and the definition of novel control techniques for multilevel converters. His current research interests include scalable neutral-point-clamped multilevel power converters applied to electric vehicles and photovoltaic- and wind-energy systems.
