Background: Grain count is crucial to wheat yield composition and estimating yield parameters. However, traditional manual counting methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study developed an advanced deep learning technique for the segmentation counting model of wheat grains. This model has been rigorously tested on three distinct wheat varieties: ‘Bainong 307’, ‘Xinmai 26’, and ‘Jimai 336’, and it has achieved unprecedented predictive counting accuracy. Method: The images of wheat ears were taken with a smartphone at the late stage of wheat grain filling. We used image processing technology to preprocess and normalize the images to 480*480 pixels. A CBAM-HRNet wheat grain segmentation counting deep learning model based on the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) was constructed by combining deep learning, migration learning, and attention mechanism. Image processing algorithms and wheat grain texture features were used to build a grain counting and predictive counting model for wheat grains. Results: The CBAM-HRNet model using the CBAM was the best for wheat grain segmentation. Its segmentation accuracy of 92.04%, the mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 85.21%, the category mean pixel accuracy (mPA) of 91.16%, and the recall rate of 91.16% demonstrate superior robustness compared to other models such as HRNet, PSPNet, DeeplabV3+ , and U-Net. Method I for spike count, which calculates twice the number of grains on one side of the spike to determine the total number of grains, demonstrates a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.85, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.53, and a mean relative error (MRE) of 2.91. In contrast, Method II for spike count involves summing the number of grains on both sides to determine the total number of grains, demonstrating a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.92, an MAE) of 1.15, and an MRE) of 2.09%. Conclusions: Image segmentation algorithm of the CBAM-HRNet wheat spike grain is a powerful solution that uses the CBAM to segment wheat spike grains and obtain richer semantic information. This model can effectively address the challenges of small target image segmentation and under-fitting problems in training. Additionally, the spike grain counting model can quickly and accurately predict the grain count of wheat, providing algorithmic support for efficient and intelligent wheat yield estimation.

Cotton aphids (Aphis gossypii Glover) pose a significant threat to cotton growth, exerting detrimental effects on both yield and quality. Conventional methods for pest and disease surveillance in agricultural settings suffer from a lack of real-time capability. The use of edge computing devices for real-time processing of cotton aphid-damaged leaves captured by field cameras holds significant practical research value for large-scale disease and pest control measures. The mainstream detection models are generally large in size, making it challenging to achieve real-time detection on edge computing devices with limited resources. In response to these challenges, we propose GVC-YOLO, a real-time detection method for cotton aphid-damaged leaves based on edge computing. Building upon YOLOv8n, lightweight GSConv and VoVGSCSP modules are employed to reconstruct the neck and backbone networks, thereby reducing model complexity while enhancing multiscale feature fusion. In the backbone network, we integrate the coordinate attention (CA) mechanism and the SimSPPF network to increase the model’s ability to extract features of cotton aphid-damaged leaves, balancing the accuracy loss of the model after becoming lightweight. The experimental results demonstrate that the size of the GVC-YOLO model is only 5.4 MB, a decrease of 14.3% compared with the baseline network, with a reduction of 16.7% in the number of parameters and 17.1% in floating-point operations (FLOPs). The mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 reach 97.9% and 90.3%, respectively. The GVC-YOLO model is optimized and accelerated by TensorRT and then deployed onto the embedded edge computing device Jetson Xavier NX for detecting cotton aphid damage video captured from the camera. Under FP16 quantization, the detection speed reaches 48 frames per second (FPS). In summary, the proposed GVC-YOLO model demonstrates good detection accuracy and speed, and its performance in detecting cotton aphid damage in edge computing scenarios meets practical application needs. This research provides a convenient and effective intelligent method for the large-scale detection and precise control of pests in cotton fields.

Timely and accurate monitoring of fractional vegetation cover (FVC), leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), and maturity of breeding material are essential for breeding companies. This study aimed to estimate LCC and FVC on the basis of remote sensing and to monitor maturity on the basis of LCC and FVC distribution. We collected UAV-RGB images at key growth stages of soybean, namely, the podding (P1), early bulge (P2), peak bulge (P3), and maturity (P4) stages. Firstly, based on the above multi-period data, four regression techniques, namely, partial least squares regression (PLSR), multiple stepwise regression (MSR), random forest regression (RF), and Gaussian process regression (GPR), were used to estimate the LCC and FVC, respectively, and plot the images in combination with vegetation index (VI). Secondly, the LCC images of P3 (non-maturity) were used to detect LCC and FVC anomalies in soybean materials. The method was used to obtain the threshold values for soybean maturity monitoring. Additionally, the mature and immature regions of soybean were monitored at P4 (mature stage) by using the thresholds of P3-LCC. The LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material presents the image pixels as a histogram and gradually removes the anomalous values from the tails until the distribution approaches a normal distribution. Finally, the P4 mature region (obtained from the previous step) is extracted, and soybean harvest monitoring is carried out in this region using the LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material based on the P4-FVC image. Among the four regression models, GPR performed best at estimating LCC (R2: 0.84, RMSE: 3.99) and FVC (R2: 0.96, RMSE: 0.08). This process provides a reference for the FVC and LCC estimation of soybean at multiple growth stages; the P3-LCC images in combination with the LCC and FVC anomaly detection methods for soybean material were able to effectively monitor soybean maturation regions (overall accuracy of 0.988, mature accuracy of 0.951, immature accuracy of 0.987). In addition, the LCC thresholds obtained by P3 were also applied to P4 for soybean maturity monitoring (overall accuracy of 0.984, mature accuracy of 0.995, immature accuracy of 0.955); the LCC and FVC anomaly detection method for soybean material enabled accurate monitoring of soybean harvesting areas (overall accuracy of 0.981, mature accuracy of 0.987, harvested accuracy of 0.972). This study provides a new approach and technique for monitoring soybean maturity in breeding fields.

Cotton leaf mites are pests that cause irreparable damage to cotton and pose a severe threat to the cotton yield, and the application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor the incidence of cotton leaf mites across a vast region is important for cotton leaf mite prevention. In this work, 52 vegetation indices were calculated based on the original five bands of spliced UAV multispectral images, and six featured indices were screened using Shapley value theory. To classify and identify cotton leaf mite infestation classes, seven machine learning classification models were used: random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), light gradient boosting machine (LGBM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), decision tree (DT), and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) models. The base model and metamodel used in stacked models were built based on a combination of four models, namely, the XGB, GBDT, KNN, and DT models, which were selected in accordance with the heterogeneity principle. The experimental results showed that the stacked classification models based on the XGB, KNN base model, and DT metamodel were the best performers, outperforming other integrated and single individual models, with an overall accuracy of 85.7% (precision: 93.3%, recall: 72.6%, and F1-score: 78.2% in the macro_avg case; precision: 88.6%, recall: 85.7%, and F1 score: 84.7% in the weighted_avg case). This approach provides support for using UAVs to monitor the cotton leaf mite prevalence over vast regions.
