Regardless of the increasingly intensive application of vehicles with electric drives, internal combustion engines are still dominant as power units of mobile systems in various sectors of the economy. In order to reduce the emission of exhaust gases and satisfy legal regulations, as a temporary solution, hybrid drives with optimized internal combustion engines and their associated systems are increasingly being used. Application of the variable compression ratio and diesel fuel injection timing, as well as the tribological optimization of parts, contribute to the reduction in fuel consumption, partly due to the reduction in mechanical losses, which, according to test results, also results in the reduction in emissions. This manuscript presents the results of diesel engine testing on a test bench in laboratory conditions at different operating modes (compression ratio, fuel injection timing, engine speed, and load), which were processed using a zero-dimensional model of the combustion process. The test results should contribute to the optimization of the combustion process from the aspect of minimal particulate matter emission. As a special contribution, the results of tribological tests of materials for strengthening the sliding surface of the aluminum alloy piston and cylinder of the internal combustion engine and air compressors, which were obtained using a tribometer, are presented. In this way, tribological optimization should also contribute to the reduction in particulate matter emissions due to the reduction in fuel consumption, and thus emissions due to the reduction in friction, as well as the recorded reduction in the wear of materials that are in sliding contact. In this way, it contributes to the reduction in harmful gases in the air.

Composite materials have been increasingly used in various branches of industry, transport, construction, and medicine—as well as in other sectors of the economy and science—in recent decades. A significant advancement in the improvement of composite material characteristics has been achieved through the use of nanoparticles, which substantially enhance the properties of the base material, whether it is the matrix or the reinforcing phase in hybrid composites. The broad application of polymers and polymer composites in many areas of engineering has had a significant impact on reducing friction and wear, improving the thermal characteristics of individual components and entire technical systems, enhancing electrical conductivity, reducing the specific weight of components, lowering noise and vibration levels, and ultimately decreasing fuel consumption, production costs, and the costs of operation and maintenance of technical systems. This paper explores the potential applications of polymer composites in various assemblies and components of conventional vehicles, as well as in hybrid and electric vehicles. Furthermore, their use in medicine and the defense industry is examined—fields in which some authors believe composites were first pioneered. Finally, aviation represents an indispensable domain for the application of such materials, presenting unique exploitation boundary conditions, including dynamic environmental changes such as variations in temperature, pressure, velocity, and direction, as well as the need for high levels of protection. Future research can be unequivocally focused on the structural and technological advancement of polymer composites, specifically through optimization aimed at reducing waste and lowering production costs.

The demand for an improvement in the tribological properties of lubricants used in various industrial plants, the automotive industry, and other power transmissions has resulted in the development of a whole family of improved lubricants based on nanotechnology. Especially important are nanotube additives, which significantly improve the tribological properties of lubricants, primarily by reducing the friction coefficient and wear of the coupled elements but also by reducing the temperature load and increasing the stability of the oil film between the lubricated surfaces. The properties of nanotube-based additives were further improved using elements such as metal oxides and compounds based on titanium, molybdenum, aluminum, etc. This paper presents the results obtained in the field of research and application of nanocomposite lubricant additives. It also gives a partial comparative analysis of the research conducted in this field. The primary goal of this paper is to analyze the research results in the field of the application of nanotubes in lubricants and to indicate the importance of their application, such as improving the tribological properties of machines and reducing power losses. Furthermore, this paper shows the negative impact of nanoparticles on the environment and human health and the costs of applying some types of nanoparticles.

Worm gears are used in various mechanical constructions, especially in heavy industrial plants, where they are exposed to high operating loads, large torques, and high temperatures, particularly in conditions where it is necessary for the input and output shafts to be at an angle of 90°. Regarding tribological optimization, the application of carbon nanotube in lubricants can lead to significant improvements in the performance characteristics of worm gears, both in terms of increasing efficiency and reducing the coefficient of friction and wear, as well as minimizing mechanical losses, noise, and vibrations. The objective of this study is for the research results, through the use of oil with varying percentages of carbon nanotube additives (CNTs), to contribute to the optimization of worm gears by improving efficiency, extending service life, and reducing vibrations—both within the gearbox itself and within the industrial facility where it is applied. The research methodology involved laboratory testing of a worm gear using lubricants with varying concentrations of carbon nanotube. During the experiment, measurements of efficiency, vibrations, and noise levels were conducted in order to determine the impact of these additives on the operational performance of the gear system. The main contribution of this research is reflected in the experimental confirmation that the use of lubricants with optimized concentrations of carbon nanotube significantly enhances the operational performance of worm gears by increasing efficiency and reducing vibrations and noise, thereby enabling tribological optimization that contributes to improved reliability, extended service life, and enhanced workplace ergonomics under demanding industrial conditions. Furthermore, experimental investigations have shown that the efficiency of the gearbox increases from an initial value of 0.42–0.65, which represents an increase of 54%, the vibrations of the worm gear decrease from an initial value of 5.83–2.56 mm/s2, which represents an decrease of 56%, while the noise was reduced from 87.5 to 77.2 dB, which represents an decrease of 12% with the increasing percentage of carbon nanotube additives in the lubricant, up to a maximum value of 1%. However, beyond this experimentally determined threshold, a decrease in the efficiency of the tested worm gearbox, as well as an increase in noise and vibration levels was recorded.

Tracked vehicles are integral for maneuvering diverse terrains, with hybrid propulsion systems offering potential benefits in terms of fuel efficiency and performance. However, research in hybrid electric tracked vehicles remains limited, thus necessitating a comprehensive analysis to maximize their advantages. This study presents a numerical analysis focusing on optimizing hybridization in speed-coupled parallel hybrid electric powertrains for tracked vehicles. A dynamic programming algorithm and custom drive cycle are utilized to determine optimal hybridization factors and assess parameter sensitivities. The study reveals that a hybridization factor of 0.48 is optimal for speed-coupled parallel configurations. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis underscores the substantial impact of factors such as the engine displacement and bore-to-stroke ratio on the fuel economy, with a 10% change in these parameters potentially influencing the fuel economy by up to 2%, thus emphasizing the importance of thorough consideration during powertrain sizing. Parallel hybrid configurations exhibit considerable potential for tracked vehicles, thus highlighting the viability of choosing them over series configurations.
