Permanently increasing requirements for the accuracy of abrasive jet machining (AJM) predetermine a need to increase requirements for the rational choice of the related energy-efficient technological equipment. Due to the relatively cheap and high-quality cleaning of materials from contaminants using AJM, the problem of increasing the energy efficiency of the corresponding equipment based on the rational choice of nozzle geometry becomes more topical. This is also because the working nozzle is a consumable part that requires periodic replacements. Therefore, this article deals with rational designing working nozzles as a reliable way to decrease the power consumption of the compressor equipment while engaging in AJM. For this purpose, experimental and numerical studies of the operating processes in the nozzle were carried out. The main idea of increasing the nozzle’s efficiency was to reduce the contact area between the working flow and the nozzle. Due to this, the friction of the abrasive material with its walls was decreased. As a result, the AJM was accelerated, and the energy consumption of the corresponding compressor equipment was reduced. The research showed that a decrease in the nozzle’s length up to 4 mm increased the flow ratio by 84% and decreased the energy consumption of the 40 kW compressor unit by 4.5 times.

Labyrinth seals are widely used in centrifugal compressors, turbines, and many other pneumatic systems due to their simplicity of design, reliability, and low cost. The calculation scheme for the movement of the working medium in a labyrinth seal is constructed by analogy with the movement of the working medium through holes with a sharp edge. Annular and flat slots, holes, and such a factor as the shaft rotation with a calculated sector of 3 degrees were studied. The purpose of the study is to determine the flow coefficient when the working medium flows through slots of various shapes. To achieve this purpose, modeling of the working medium flow in the FlowVision software was performed. The mass flow and flow coefficients are determined for the studied slot shapes. The convergence of the calculation results was determined by comparing the values of the mass flow rate at the inlet and outlet of the slot. Differences in visualizations of the flow for the studied variants of slots were established. The resulting difference should be taken into account in practical calculations of the working medium mass flow through the slot using a conditional flow rate factor which is determined by the slot design.

Ejector-cleaning devices for abrasive jet machining have various practical applications. The working nozzle is one of the device’s key elements affecting the treated surface quality. There arises the necessity for new approaches to achieving an efficiency increase in abrasive jet equipment nozzles, namely their design improvement and further development of a new, relatively cheap but effective technology for their manufacturing and maintenance. This technology should allow for the high durability of nozzles without being essential for the hardness or wear resistance parameters of the material used for manufacturing. The nozzle should be designed as a long-length perforated insert to allow for radial airflow, forcing the abrasive material (river sand) from the inner walls of the nozzle’s working surface to reduce its friction with the abrasive material. This will result in new wear-out conditions, providing an essential decrease in the wear-out of a nozzle’s working surface. The article aims to develop a more effective design for the working nozzle based on the perforated insert application. The task was set to provide a more detailed experimental and theoretical study of the processes in perforated nozzles to improve their effectiveness. The research resulted in a new design for nozzles with higher efficiency.

The article presents the results of numerical and experimental studies of a working nozzle for jet-abrasive machining of material surfaces. Nozzle designs with variable geometry were investigated. The aim of the study was to identify reserves for increasing the efficiency of the nozzle to ensure the energy efficiency of the jet-abrasive installation for sustainable production in the context of Industry 5.0. The implementation of numerical modeling made it possible to carry out a series of calculations for the considered nozzle designs using an air-abrasive mixture with flow visualization. The technological parameters of jet-abrasive machining were analyzed. A series of numerical and experimental studies were conducted using the principles of Industry 4.0. Two software packages were used for numerical studies. The results of the calculations that were obtained coincided quite well. Overall, the obtained results made it possible to adjust the settings of the pneumo-abrasive unit in order to get the proper roughness of the processed surface, opt for proper working nozzle design, and determine proper pressure and air consumption for the highest unit efficiency. In a series of studies, the authors proposed a mathematical model for determining the values of mass flow rates of the working medium in the nozzle. The analytical coefficients of the developed model have been obtained. In addition, an approach to determining the main parameters of abrasive blasting based on experimental data was developed. The results obtained were verified by comparing them with the results of experimental studies. It was found that to increase the efficiency of the Venturi nozzle, the outlet cross-section of the considered nozzles should be reduced, and the mass flow rate of the dispersed phase should not significantly affect the speed of the grains of sand at the nozzle outlet.

The use of confuser–diffuser nozzles in power machines enables efficient conversion of gas energy into mechanical work. However, traditional Laval, Venturi, and Vitoszynski nozzles are associated with shock wave formation, causing energy losses, noise, and structural loading. This study proposes innovative jet nozzles with an internal streamlined body that forms annular flow rather than a classical diffusor. A rational computational design methodology based on the Venturi effect criterion and equality of cross-sectional area variation laws was developed. A couple of configurations with spindle-toroidal and ellipsoidal streamlined bodies were generated analytically, studied numerically, and confirmed experimentally. Based on the SST turbulence model, CFD simulations for a compressible flow (air) show that the proposed designs reduce the pressure jump from 60 kPa (traditional nozzle) to 20 kPa for the spindle-toroidal configuration and eliminate it for the ellipsoidal configuration. The Reynolds number in the throat decreases by a factor of 2.6, reducing turbulence. The outlet velocity increases by 3.0% for the spindle-toroidal design, while the ellipsoidal nozzle provides expansion with slightly lower velocity but a smoother velocity profile. Experimental thrust measurements agree with simulations within 2.6–6.7%. The proposed designs enhance energy efficiency, reduce erosion and vibration, and enable adaptive flow control via axial displacement of the streamlined body.
