One of the key tasks of the overhead line power equipment inspection based on aerial images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles is to determine whether the insulators are faulty. However, the fault area on the insulator string occupies a relatively small portion of the entire image, which will make detection difficult. This article presents an intelligent fault detection method for overhead line insulators based on aerial images and improved you only look once (YOLOv3) deep learning technology. In our model, a densely connected feature pyramid network (FPN) is proposed. First, this network can improve the utilization rate of the strong semantic information of deep features and the localization information of shallow features, thereby improving the small insulator fault (missing-cap) detection performance of the YOLOv3 model. Second, this network reduces the number of parameters of the YOLOv3 model, resulting in a low risk of network over-fitting for small datasets. The experimental results on the CPLID dataset show that our model has higher detection accuracy in localization of overhead line insulators and detection of insulator missing-cap faults compared with the existing works.

Compared to the traditional aircraft, electrification of power system in aircraft has potential to revolutionise the aviation industry. Typically, more‐electric aircraft (MEA), even all‐electric aircraft has been developed and delivered to decrease the greenhouse gas emission and increase the energy efficiency. The next generation of MEA will operate at high voltage to facilitate the transfer of significant levels of electrical power in an electrified aircraft. However, the higher voltage inevitably leads to an increased risk to the insulation of the electrical components and power system. This study aims to provide a critical overview of the insulation challenges from the perspective of electrified aircraft, typically MEA application. The development of MEA and the special working conditions are explained at the beginning. Then the insulation challenges of power modules, electric machines, aeronautical cables etc. are discussed in detail. Finally, the existing technical barriers and future prospects of insulation for electrified aircraft are summarised. It provides a reference for the future design and test in power system of next generation MEA and related electrified air transportations.

Moisture accumulates with the growing aging progress of oil-paper insulation and further shortens the remaining life of the transformer. The frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) technique can be used to realize the moisture estimation. However, the moisture estimation results would be unreliable once the aging effect on FDS was ignored. Given this issue, an alternative model including the aging effect is thus proposed using FDS and intelligent algorithm. In this work, the feature parameters of FDS data are used to build the databases for characterizing the aging degree and moisture. Then, the moisture estimation models are developed using the weighted K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) algorithm. The accuracy and applicability of the proposed models are finally discussed in laboratory and field conditions. In that respect, the findings reveal that the reported model is available for moisture estimation of transformer oil-paper insulation under various aging degrees and test temperatures.

By using a ballast resistor having resistance of 10 MΩ, varying the gap distance from 23 mm to 0 mm and using a fixed dc voltage at 14 kV, the streamer corona, single filament, transient glow, dc glow, and spark modes and their transitions are demonstrated in positive needle-to-plate air discharge at atmospheric pressure. The electrical characteristics, the rotational temperature, and vibrational temperature of N2, as well as the temporal behavior of streamer propagation in these discharge modes, are investigated. First, to the best of our knowledge, the transient glow mode between the single filament mode and the dc glow mode, operated in a stable repetitive fashion, is reported for the first time in positive dc air discharges. The pulse repetition frequency ranges from 7.5 to 15 kHz. The current density and the rotational temperature are in the range of 27–105 A/mm2 and 600–850 K, respectively. Its temporal behavior reveals that after the primary streamer arrives at the cathode, the secondary streamer initiates within several nanoseconds near the anode and then propagates at a high speed of 105–106 m/s. There is no transition to spark even after the secondary streamer arrives at the cathode. Second, the transition from single filament to transient glow is characterized by the sudden decrease in the pulse repetition frequency and the abrupt increase in the current amplitude, the pulse width, and the gas temperature. Third, the transition from transient glow to dc glow is identified visibly by the formation of typical glow structure (positive column, Faraday dark space, and negative glow), which is accompanied by the transition of the discharge current from nanosecond pulse to dc. In addition, both the ballast resistor and the stray capacitor exert significant influence on the transition of discharge modes.

More-electric-aircrafts (MEAs) are heading towards larger power, higher voltage, and more optimum architectures, it is extremely important to understand partial discharge (PD) behaviors under the challenging aeronautical power systems. PD under the pressure of 1–101 kPa and frequency of 50–1000 Hz is studied to emulate the practical situation with the consideration of insulation defects from electric machine windings. The high frequency current transformer (HFCT) is specifically employed to pick up partial discharge signals. Experimental results indicate that PD inception voltage (PDIV) decreases almost linearly with air pressure. As to the discharge amplitude, it increases first and then decreases as air pressure dropping. The highest discharge repetition rate and the number of discharges appear at 30 kPa. High frequency doubles the number of discharges without affecting PD amplitude. Low air pressure causes the phase shift and phase width of the phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) to increase, and the trend also is accelerated by high frequency. This experimental approach is beneficial to provide prerequisite knowledge in characterizing PD and assessing its potential adverse impact on the aeronautical power system and consequently contribute to optimizing the insulation design for MEA.

Non-thermal plasma catalysis, as a special heterogeneous catalytic reaction, needs to consider both gas discharge and catalytic reaction. Packed bed dielectric barrier discharge (PB-DBD) is widely used in non-thermal plasma catalysis, but the exact control principle of gas discharge, especially streamer discharge, is not clear. In this study, therefore, the orderly arranged dielectric rods were packed in the discharge gap of PB-DBD, and the streamer discharge behaviors were controlled by adjusting their diameter(s), quantity(ies), location(s) and dielectric constant(s). Al2O3 and ZrO2 dielectric rods with dielectric constants of about 9 and 25 were used as packing material. Pure CO2 was used as reaction gas and discharge gas. Discharge images showed that stable and controllable streamer discharges can be formed between the dielectric rod and ground electrode. The intensity, width and length of the streamer discharge can be significantly changed by optimizing the dielectric constant, diameter, packing number and position of the dielectric rod, thereby affecting the CO2 conversion efficiency. Increasing dielectric constant and the distance between the dielectric rod and ground electrode can increase the intensity of streamer discharge, thus promoting the CO2 conversion efficiency. Compared with an empty reactor, after packing 24 ZrO2 dielectric rods with a diameter of 1 mm, the CO2 conversion and energy efficiency increased from 9.58% to 20.1% and from 1.67% to 2.89%, respectively. In short, this research has important implications for plasma catalysis. This study not only reveals the synergistic characteristics between streamer discharge and CO2 dissociation, but also provides an important idea for structural optimization of PB-DBD catalyst.
