Research attention has been drawn to honey’s nutritional status and beneficial properties for human health. This study aimed to provide a bibliometric analysis of honey’s antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The research advancements within this field from 2001 to 2022 were addressed using the Scopus database, R, and VOSviewer. Of the 383 results, articles (273) and reviews (81) were the most common document types, while the annual growth rate of published manuscripts reached 17.5%. The most relevant topics about honey’s antimicrobial and antioxidant properties were related to the agricultural and biological sciences, biochemistry, and pharmacology. According to a keyword analysis, the most frequent terms in titles, abstracts, and keywords were honey, antimicrobial, antioxidant, bee, propolis, phenolic compounds, wound, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and polyphenols. A trend topic analysis showed that the research agenda mainly encompassed antioxidants, pathogens, and anti-infection and chemical agents. In a co-occurrence analysis, antioxidants, anti-infection agents, and chemistry were connected to honey research. The initial research focus of this domain was primarily on honey’s anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic activity, wound healing, and antibacterial agents. The research agenda was enriched in the subsequent years by pathogens, propolis, oxidative stress, and flavonoids. It was possible to pinpoint past trends and ongoing developments and provide a valuable insight into the field of honey research.

This bibliometric study investigates the scientific landscape of environmental sustainability within the European Green Deal (EGD) framework. Utilizing data from the Scopus and Science Direct databases, the study aims to map research trends and frontiers, providing a comprehensive overview of the evolving discourse on sustainability. The EGD’s ambitious goal to render the European Union climate-neutral by 2050 is highlighted, showcasing its significant impact across multiple sectors. The study reveals the integration of new methods and broadening research scopes by employing modern bibliometric techniques. Key thematic focuses include the transition to a circular economy and the emphasis on sustainable resource management, underpinning the EGD’s comprehensive approach to combining economic growth with environmental protection. The analysis unveils the critical role of technological innovation and policy reforms in advancing toward a sustainable, competitive, and climate-neutral economy. The research demonstrates the pivotal role of empirical studies in guiding policy formulation and implementation, showing how targeted measures in resource and energy productivity, combined with a decisive shift towards renewable energy, are integral to fostering a sustainable, competitive, and climate-neutral economy. This convergence of findings reinforces the argument that a multifaceted approach, encompassing policy, technology, and innovation, is essential for navigating the challenges of environmental sustainability and climate change, aligning closely with the overarching aims of the EGD.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder affecting a vast variety of the population. The onset of RA as well as the development of systematic immunization is affected by both genetic and environmental risk factors. This review aims to point out the role of natural products in the management of RA, focusing on the reports of basic research (in vitro and animal studies) emphasizing the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties considered in the field of RA. A systematic screening of the relevant literature was carried out on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus with the following criteria: publication date, 2015–2020; language, English; study design, in vitro or animal models; and the investigation of one or several natural products in the context of RA, including, when available, the molecular mechanisms implicated. A total of 211 papers were initially obtained and screened. In vitro and animal studies referring to 20 natural products and 15 pure compounds were ultimately included in this review. The outcomes of this work provide an overview of the methods employed in basic research over the past five years, with emphasis on the limitations presented, while demonstrating the potential benefits of utilizing natural products in the management of RA as supported by in vitro and animal studies.

The natural process of aging gradually causes changes in living organisms, leading to the deterioration of organs, tissues, and cells. In the case of osteoarthritis (OA), the degradation of cartilage is a result of both mechanical stress and biochemical factors. Natural products have already been evaluated for their potential role in the prevention and treatment of OA, providing a safe and effective adjunctive therapeutic approach. This review aimed to assess the therapeutic potential of natural products and their derivatives in osteoarthritis via a systematic search of literature after 2008, including in vitro, in vivo, ex vivo, and animal models, along with clinical trials and meta-analysis. Overall, 170 papers were obtained and screened. Here, we presented findings referring to the preventative and therapeutic potential of 17 natural products and 14 naturally occurring compounds, underlining, when available, the mechanisms implicated. The nature of OA calls to initially focus on the management of symptoms, and, in that context, several naturally occurring compounds have been utilized. Underlying a global need for more sustainable natural sources for treatment, the evidence supporting their chondroprotective potential is still building up. However, arriving at that kind of solution requires more clinical research, targeting the implications of long-term treatment, adverse effects, and epigenetic implications.

The Mediterranean diet is associated with multiple health benefits, and the modified Mediterranean Diet Score (mMDS) has been previously validated as a measure of Mediterranean diet adherence. The aim of this study was to examine associations between the mMDS and anthropometric indices, blood pressure, and biochemical parameters in a sample of career firefighters. The participants were from Indiana Fire Departments, taking part in the “Feeding America’s Bravest” study, a cluster-randomized controlled trial that aimed to assess the efficacy of a Mediterranean diet intervention. We measured Mediterranean diet adherence using the mMDS. Anthropometric, blood pressure, and biochemical measurements were also collected. Univariate and multivariate linear regression models were used. In unadjusted analyses, many expected favorable associations between the mMDS and cardiovascular disease risk factors were found among the 460 firefighters. After adjustment for age, gender, ethnicity, physical activity, and smoking, a unitary increase in the mMDS remained associated with a decrease of the total cholesterol/HDL ratio (β-coefficient −0.028, p = 0.002) and an increase of HDL-cholesterol (β-coefficient 0.254, p = 0.004). In conclusion, greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with markers of decreased cardiometabolic risk. The mMDS score is a valid instrument for measuring adherence to the Mediterranean diet and may have additional utility in research and clinical practice.

This study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis of terroir and explore its conceptual horizons. Advancements in terroir research until 2022 were investigated using the Scopus database, R, and VOSviewer. Out of the 907 results, the most prevalent document types were articles (771) and reviews (70). The annual growth rate of published manuscripts in this field was 7.8%. The research on terroir encompassed a wide range of disciplines, with significant contributions from Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology. Through keyword analysis, the study identified the most frequently occurring terms in titles, abstracts, and keywords fields, including ‘terroir’, ‘wine’, ‘soil’, ‘wines’, ‘grape’, ‘analysis’, ‘vineyard’, ‘composition’, and ‘climate’. A trend topic analysis revealed that research in terroir primarily focused on the geo-ecology and physiology of grapes. Furthermore, considerable attention was given to methods and techniques related to the physicochemical, sensory, and microbial characterization of terroir and various aspects of the wine industry. Initially, the research in this domain was focused on terroir, authenticity, grapevine, soils, soil moisture, and wine quality. However, over time, the research agenda expanded to include topics such as food analysis, viticulture, wine, taste, sustainability, and climate change. New research areas emerged, including phenolic compounds, anthocyanin, phenols, sensory analysis, and precision agriculture—all of which became integral components of the scientific studies on terroir. Overall, this study provided valuable insights into the historical trends and current developments in terroir research, contributing to our understanding of the frontiers in this field.
