Ti and Ti6Al4V alloy are extensively utilized in structural parts in engineering applications and the production of medical implants due to their excellent mechanical properties, lightweight, and high corrosion resistance. This study comprehensively evaluates their corrosion behavior in three challenging aquatic environments: brackish water, seawater, and seawater bittern. Utilizing open circuit potential (EOC) measurements with polarization techniques (linear and potentiodynamic) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, the research highlights distinct environmental influences on corrosion performance. Notably, Ti and Ti6Al4V alloy demonstrated exceptional stability with the highest polarization resistance and lowest corrosion current in brackish water, while seawater bittern presented the most demanding condition for Ti6Al4V. Additionally, the analysis of the electrode surfaces after polarization measurements using optical microscopy, optical profilometry, and SEM/EDS tests revealed minor damage, indicating the high corrosion resistance of these materials. This study advances the understanding of Ti and Ti6Al4V alloy performance in diverse environments and offers valuable insights for optimizing their use in harsh aquatic conditions, particularly for applications requiring durability and longevity.

Stainless steels are commonly used in coastal structures and in seawater desalination and treatment systems, so understanding their corrosion behaviour under different salinity conditions is important to ensure the durability and reliability of the material. In this study, the behaviour of AISI 304L, AISI 316L, and 2205 duplex stainless steels (DSS) was tested in three media with different salinities: brackish water (BSW), seawater (SW), and concentrated seawater bittern (CSW). Testing was conducted using classical electrochemical methods (open circuit potential, linear, and potentiodynamic polarization) supplemented by surface analyses (optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, and optical profilometry). Corrosion resistance increased in the order AISI 304L < AISI 316L < 2205 DSS. Duplex steel 2205 performed best in all media: it exhibited the most positive open circuit potential, the highest polarization resistance, the lowest corrosion current density, and the widest passive range. Unexpectedly, CSW showed improved corrosion resistance compared to SW, which is explained by the reduced chloride content characteristic of seawater bittern after NaCl crystallisation and the presence of magnesium, calcium, and sulphate ions that promote the formation of protective deposits on the metal surface. Pronounced pitting was observed on AISI 304L steel in seawater, while surface degradation in brackish and concentrated seawater was significantly less, and 2205 DSS remained almost unchanged. The results obtained can serve as guidelines for the design and selection of materials for equipment and structures in industries operating in aggressive marine and coastal environments, such as desalination plants, shipbuilding, and energy systems.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of a rinsing of Mg(OH)2 precipitated from seawater by substoichiometric precipitation (80% precipitation) and the addition of TiO2 on microstructural characteristics of the MgO obtained by sintering at low temperature (1400?C). The results of examination indicate that the method of rinsing of the magnesium hydroxide precipitate in the technological process of obtaining MgO from seawater significantly affects the chemical composition of samples, primarily with regard to the CaO and B2O3 content. The samples were doped with TiO2 to improve the evaporation of B2O3 and sintering of MgO samples that were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDS. These techniques confirmed the high purity of MgO samples obtained and the formation of secondary compounds in very small quantities that have a positive effect on the densification.

Understanding the degradation behavior of polymer composites is crucial for their practical application, especially in areas such as biomedicine and environmental engineering. In this study, we investigated the influence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) particle size and content, containing 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 wt% m/nTiO2, on the degradation mechanism of biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) biocomposites. The degradation kinetics of the prepared biocomposites were evaluated using the Friedman method in conjunction with multivariate nonlinear regression facilitated by the Netzsch Thermokinetics software. The results indicate different degradation mechanisms for PCL biocomposites containing TiO2 microparticles compared to biocomposites containing TiO2 nanoparticles. However, the PCL biocomposites with TiO2 microparticles showed a three-step degradation process, and the PCL biocomposites with TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited a four-step degradation process. This difference can be attributed to the observed agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles within the PCL matrix, which leads to an additional diffusion step in the degradation process. Interestingly, the addition of TiO2 particles did not change the basic degradation mechanism of PCL but prolonged the degradation process to a higher conversion range. These findings shed light on the complicated interplay between the properties of the filler particles and the behavior of the polymer matrix and provide valuable clues for the design and optimization of biodegradable biocomposites.
