Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are caused by neurodegeneration and poor communication between neurons in the brain. So far, no effective medications have been discovered for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Thus, early diagnosis is necessary to avoid the development of these diseases. In this study, efficient machine learning algorithms were assessed to evaluate the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS) dataset for dementia diagnosis. Two CNN models (AlexNet and ResNet-50) and hybrid techniques between deep learning and machine learning (AlexNet+SVM and ResNet-50+SVM) were also evaluated for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. For the OASIS dataset, we balanced the dataset, replaced the missing values, and applied the t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding algorithm (t-SNE) to represent the high-dimensional data in the low-dimensional space. All of the machine learning algorithms, namely, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree, Random Forest and K Nearest Neighbours (KNN), achieved high performance for diagnosing dementia. The random forest algorithm achieved an overall accuracy of 94% and precision, recall and F1 scores of 93%, 98% and 96%, respectively. The second dataset, the MRI image dataset, was evaluated by AlexNet and ResNet-50 models and AlexNet+SVM and ResNet-50+SVM hybrid techniques. All models achieved high performance, but the performance of the hybrid methods between deep learning and machine learning was better than that of the deep learning models. The AlexNet+SVM hybrid model achieved accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and AUC scores of 94.8%, 93%, 97.75% and 99.70%, respectively.

In this work, we report on the effect of substituting the active intrinsic i-layer on a conventional pin structure of lead-free perovskite solar cell (PSC) by a homo p-n junction, keeping the thickness of the active layer constant. It is expected that when the active i-layer is substituted by a p-n homo junction, one can increase the collection efficiency of the photo-generated electrons and holes due to the built-in electric field of the homo junction. The impact of the technological and physical device parameters on the performance parameters of the solar cell have been worked out. It was found that p-side thickness must be wider than the n-side, while its acceptor concentration should be slightly lower than the donor concentration of the n-side to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition, different absorber types, namely, i-absorber, n-absorber and p-absorber, are compared to the proposed pn-absorber, showing a performance-boosting effect when using the latter. Moreover, the proposed structure is made without a hole transport layer (HTL) to avoid the organic issues of the HTL materials. The back metal work function, bulk trap density and ETL material are optimized for best performance of the HTL-free structure, giving Jsc = 26.48, Voc = 0.948 V, FF = 77.20 and PCE = 19.37% for AM1.5 solar spectra. Such results highlight the prospective of the proposed structure and emphasize the importance of using HTL-free solar cells without deteriorating the efficiency. The solar cell is investigated by using SCAPS simulator.

Oral cancer is one of the lethal diseases among the available malignant tumors globally, and it has become a challenging health issue in developing and low-to-middle income countries. The prognosis of oral cancer remains poor because over 50% of patients are recognized at advanced stages. Earlier detection and screening models for oral cancer are mainly based on experts’ knowledge, and it necessitates an automated tool for oral cancer detection. The recent developments of computational intelligence (CI) and computer vision-based approaches help to accomplish enhanced performance in medical-image-related tasks. This article develops an intelligent deep learning enabled oral squamous cell carcinoma detection and classification (IDL-OSCDC) technique using biomedical images. The presented IDL-OSCDC model involves the recognition and classification of oral cancer on biomedical images. The proposed IDL-OSCDC model employs Gabor filtering (GF) as a preprocessing step to eliminate noise content. In addition, the NasNet model is exploited for the generation of high-level deep features from the input images. Moreover, an enhanced grasshopper optimization algorithm (EGOA)-based deep belief network (DBN) model is employed for oral cancer detection and classification. The hyperparameter tuning of the DBN model is performed using the EGOA algorithm which in turn boosts the classification outcomes. The experimentation outcomes of the IDL-OSCDC model using a benchmark biomedical imaging dataset highlighted its promising performance over the other methods with maximum , , , and of 95%, 96.15%, 93.75%, and 94.67% correspondingly.

In this paper, an analytical model of a proposed low-cost high efficiency NPN silicon-based solar cell structure is presented. The structure is based on using low cost heavily doped commercially available silicon wafers and proposed to be fabricated by the same steps as the conventional solar cells except an extra deep trench etch step. Moreover, the cell has been engineered to react to the UV spectrum, resulting in a greater conversion performance. The presented analytical model takes the electrical and optical characteristics into account. Thus, the influence of both physical and technological parameters on the structure performance could be easily examined. Consequently, the optimization of the structure performance becomes visible. To inspect the validity of the analytical model, a comparison of the main performance parameters resulting from the model results with TCAD simulations is carried out showing good agreement.

Cervical cancer is a global health problem that threatens the lives of women. Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is one of the most used techniques for diagnosing cervical cancer; converting from vitreous slides to whole-slide images (WSIs) allows images to be evaluated by artificial intelligence techniques. Because of the lack of cytologists and cytology devices, it is major to promote automated systems that receive and diagnose huge amounts of images quickly and accurately, which are useful in hospitals and clinical laboratories. This study aims to extract features in a hybrid method to obtain representative features to achieve promising results. Three proposed approaches have been applied with different methods and materials as follows: The first approach is a hybrid method called VGG-16 with SVM and GoogLeNet with SVM. The second approach is to classify the cervical abnormal cell images by ANN classifier with hybrid features extracted by the VGG-16 and GoogLeNet. A third approach is to classify the images of abnormal cervical cells by an ANN classifier with features extracted by the VGG-16 and GoogLeNet and combine them with hand-crafted features, which are extracted using Fuzzy Color Histogram (FCH), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) algorithms. Based on the mixed features of CNN with features of FCH, GLCM, and LBP (hand-crafted), the ANN classifier reached the best results for diagnosing abnormal cells of the cervix. The ANN network achieved with the hybrid features of VGG-16 and hand-crafted an accuracy of 99.4%, specificity of 100%, sensitivity of 99.35%, AUC of 99.89% and precision of 99.42%.

Intracranial hemorrhaging is considered a type of disease that affects the brain and is very dangerous, with high-mortality cases if there is no rapid diagnosis and prompt treatment. CT images are one of the most important methods of diagnosing intracranial hemorrhages. CT images contain huge amounts of information, requiring a lot of experience and taking a long time for proper analysis and diagnosis. Thus, artificial intelligence techniques provide an automatic mechanism for evaluating CT images to make a diagnosis with high accuracy and help radiologists make their diagnostic decisions. In this study, CT images for rapid detection of intracranial hemorrhages are diagnosed by three proposed systems with various methodologies and materials, where each system contains more than one network. The first system is proposed by three pretrained deep learning models, which are GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet. The second proposed system using a hybrid technology consists of two parts: the first part is the GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet models for extracting feature maps, while the second part is the SVM algorithm for classifying feature maps. The third proposed system uses artificial neural networks (ANNs) based on the features of the GoogLeNet, ResNet-50 and AlexNet models, whose dimensions are reduced by a principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm, and then the low-dimensional features are combined with the features of the GLCM and LBP algorithms. All the proposed systems achieved promising results in the diagnosis of CT images for the rapid detection of intracranial hemorrhages. The ANN network based on fusion of the deep feature of AlexNet with the features of GLCM and LBP reached an accuracy of 99.3%, precision of 99.36%, sensitivity of 99.5%, specificity of 99.57% and AUC of 99.84%.
