Coal dust pollution poses a serious public health threat. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of creating a coal dust suppressant using molasses, a byproduct of the sugar industry. We studied the effects of a molasses solution of varying concentrations (i.e., ranging from 0% (pure water) to 40%) on the moisture, bonding, and wind erosion properties of coal dust. Overall, the effectiveness of the molasses increased with their concentration, and it manifested itself in the following way: (1) the molasses improved the anti-evaporation ability of wet coal dust. For example, the evaporation mass of the coal dust wetted using a molasses solution decreased by 82.8%; (2) molasses effectively agglutinated coal dust; (3) molasses can effectively decrease the surface tension and increase the viscosity of the wetting solution. The surface tension of the molasses solution reached 41.37 mN/m and the viscosity increased to 6.79 mPa·s; (4) molasses can significantly suppress the wind erosion of deposited coal dust, with its wind erosion mass decreasing 99.1%; finally, (5) the effectiveness of molasses at suppressing coal dust was discussed at a molecular level. This study highlights the feasibility of a low-cost and environment-friendly dust suppressant in coal mines.

To investigate the influence of surface tension and viscosity on the atomization performance of solid cone nozzles and improve their dust reduction efficiency in industrial and mining enterprises, this study employed a self-built PDPA dust-fog coupling experimental system to explore the effects of different surface tension and viscosity solutions on atomization performance from three aspects: axial, radial, and fog field distribution. The experimental results indicate that compared with surface tension, surface tension has a greater influence on droplet size and velocity in the axial direction. In the radial direction, increasing surface tension and reducing viscosity within a certain range can make the droplet size and velocity distribution more uniform. Additionally, surface tension and viscosity significantly affect the fog field distribution. It was found that a decrease in surface tension can result in a closer proximity of the droplet velocity and size expansion area to the nozzle, while an increase in viscosity can lead to a more prolonged stable area. Furthermore, optimizing the surface tension and viscosity can significantly enhance the efficacy of dust reduction for respirable dust. Consequently, the application of the aforementioned atomization principles to regulate the fog field characteristics of solid cone nozzles can effectively mitigate dust in the production process and augment the dust reduction rate of industrial and mining enterprises.

The problem of heat hazard in tunnel engineering has seriously affected the normal work of personnel and machinery. After combining the heat hazard control method of controlling the energy source and blocking the energy transfer, a technical scheme of precise thermal insulation at the working face in concert with geothermal energy extraction is proposed, forming a coupled cooling method of ventilation and partial thermal insulation. By building a scaled model test platform, the temperature field of the working area was analyzed, and the effect of factors, such as with or without a thermal insulation layer, ventilation velocity, and surrounding rock temperature on the cooling limit, was discussed. The feasibility of extracting energy and enhancing cooling through the heat exchange layer was judged. The results show that the partial thermal insulation can effectively weaken the heat dissipation of the surrounding rock and enhance the ventilation and cooling effect, which can reduce the average ventilation limit temperature of the working area by 1.6 °C. The addition of the heat exchange layer can further improve the tunnel environment on the basis of partial insulation, making the cooling limit temperature drop by another 3.1 °C, and the heat exchange layer can work for one year to extract geothermal energy 4.5 × 108 J. The coupled cooling scheme of ventilation and partial thermal insulation is practical and useful, which can provide technical ideas for improving the thermal environment of the tunnel.

The microscale simulation of ultrafine particle transport and deposition in fibrous filtration media was achieved with a novel particle tracking model using a 3D Monte Carlo model. The particle deposition process is governed by the convection–diffusion field. Simulations were performed by considering the fibrous filtration media as an array of identical parallel fibers, in which the flow field was accurately described by an analytical solution. The model of particle movement was described by the random probability distribution characterized by a dimensionless factor, the Peclet number (Pe), based on a convection–diffusive equation of particle transport in fluid. The influence of the particle Peclet number (Pe) on the particle deposition process and the resulting deposition morphology was investigated. The results were analyzed in terms of dust layer growth, particles’ trajectories and dust layer porosity for a vast range of Peclet numbers. The development of distinct deposition morphologies was found by varying the Peclet number (Pe). With a small Peclet number, diffusion dominated deposition and led to the formation of a more open and looser dust layer structure, while with larger Peclet numbers, convection dominated deposition and was found to form compact deposits. According to the change in the location of the packing densities along the dust layer height direction, the dust layer structure could be divided into three typical parts: the substructure, main profile and surface layer. In addition, the deposit morphologies observed for a high Pe were in good agreement with the experimental results found in the literature.

During the production process in mines, large amounts of dusts are produced. The dusts pose a potential hazard to the health and safety of miners. Traditional dust removal methods, such as ventilation, water sprays and foam technology, cannot completely solve the problem of dust pollution, due to low efficiency or high consumption of water or large resistance (>2000 Pa). Therefore, a swirling curtain dust collector (SCDC) was proposed to collect the dust in mines. The device was combined swirling atomization with spray curtain for dust removal. The performance of SCDC was investigated. According to the results, the optimum working condition of the device was: air pressure: 0.35 MPa, water volume: 30 L/h; liquid–gas ratio: 0.15 L/m3; air speed: 14–16 m/s. Under these operation parameters, the suppression efficiency of total dust and respirable dust were over 99.8% and 97%. The proposed device was applied at transfer stations of Luohe Metal Mine in Anhui, China. The application results showed that the dust concentration at the outlet of SCDC in the transfer station is lower than 20 mg/m3, which is stipulated by Chinese standard GB 28661-2012. The proposed device is expected to replace the traditional Venturi wet scrubber in mines.

Coal dust endangers the health and safety of workers in underground coal mines. Therefore, developing coal dust suppressants with dust prevention and explosion-proof properties is critical. The influence of molasses on the explosion and decomposition of the coal dust deposited in underground mines was investigated using 20 L explosion experiments and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Findings reveal that, first, molasses can weakly promote the explosion of coal dust at low coal dust concentrations (<400 g/m3) but has no significant effect on the explosion at high coal dust concentrations (≥400 g/m3). Second, the decomposition process of the coal dust mixed with molasses has three stages: the moisture evaporation stage (0–150 °C), the molasses decomposition stage (150–300 °C), and the coal dust decomposition stage (300–500 °C). Molasses oxidation consumes oxygen and releases heat; at low coal dust concentrations, the released heat can promote coal dust decomposition to produce combustible gas, enhancing the coal dust explosion; at high coal dust concentrations, under the co-influence of the heat generation and oxygen consumption, molasses has no effect on the coal dust explosion. This is the mechanism of which molasses influences coal dust explosions.
