The gravitational-wave signal GW250114 was observed by the two LIGO detectors with a network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 80. The signal was emitted by the coalescence of two black holes with near-equal masses m 1 = 33.6 − 0.8 + 1.2 M ⊙ and m 2 = 32.2 − 1.3 + 0.8 M ⊙ , and small spins χ 1 , 2 ≤ 0.26 (90% credibility) and negligible eccentricity e ≤ 0.03 . Postmerger data excluding the peak region are consistent with the dominant quadrupolar ( ℓ = | m | = 2 ) mode of a Kerr black hole and its first overtone. We constrain the modes’ frequencies to ± 30 % of the Kerr spectrum, providing a test of the remnant’s Kerr nature. We also examine Hawking’s area law, also known as the second law of black hole mechanics, which states that the total area of the black hole event horizons cannot decrease with time. A range of analyses that exclude up to five of the strongest merger cycles confirm that the remnant area is larger than the sum of the initial areas to high credibility.

On 2023 November 23, the two LIGO observatories both detected GW231123, a gravitational-wave signal consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses 13 7 − 18 + 23 M ⊙ and 10 1 − 50 + 22 M ⊙ (90% credible intervals), at a luminosity distance of 0.7–4.1 Gpc, a redshift of 0.4 0 − 0.25 + 0.27 , and with a network signal-to-noise ratio of ∼20.7. Both black holes exhibit high spins— 0.9 0 − 0.19 + 0.10 and 0.8 0 − 0.52 + 0.20 , respectively. A massive black hole remnant is supported by an independent ringdown analysis. Some properties of GW231123 are subject to large systematic uncertainties, as indicated by differences in the inferred parameters between signal models. The primary black hole lies within or above the theorized mass gap where black holes between 60–130 M ⊙ should be rare, due to pair-instability mechanisms, while the secondary spans the gap. The observation of GW231123 therefore suggests the formation of black holes from channels beyond standard stellar collapse and that intermediate-mass black holes of mass ∼200 M ⊙ form through gravitational-wave-driven mergers.

Version 4.0 of the Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-4.0) adds new candidates detected by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA observatories through the first part of the fourth observing run (O4a: 2023 May 24 15:00:00 to 2024 January 16 16:00:00 UTC) and a preceding engineering run. In these new data, we find 128 compact binary coalescence candidates that are identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p astro ≥ 0.5 and that are not vetoed during event validation. We also provide detailed source property measurements for 86 of these that have a false-alarm rate <1 yr −1 . Based on the inferred component masses, these candidates are consistent with signals from binary black holes (BBHs) and neutron star–black hole binaries (GW230518_125908 and GW230529_181500). Median-inferred component masses of BBHs in the catalog now range from 5.79M⊙ (GW230627_015337) to 137 M ⊙ (GW231123_135430), while GW231123_135430 was probably produced by the most massive binary observed in the catalog. For the first time, we have discovered BBH signals with network signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 30, GW230814_230901 and GW231226_101520, enabling high-fidelity studies of the waveforms and astrophysical properties of these systems. Combined with the 90 candidates included in GWTC-3.0, the catalog now contains 218 candidates with p astro ≥ 0.5 and not otherwise vetoed, more than doubling the size of the catalog and further opening our view of the gravitational-wave Universe.

Brillouin and Raman scattering spectroscopy are established techniques for the nondestructive contactless and label-free readout of mechanical, chemical, and structural properties of condensed matter. Brillouin-Raman investigations currently require separate measurements and a site-matched approach to obtain complementary information from a sample. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of fully scanning multimodal microspectroscopy for simultaneous detection of Brillouin and Raman light scattering in an exceptionally wide spectral range, from fractions of GHz to hundreds of THz. It yields an unprecedented 150-dB contrast, which is especially important for the analysis of opaque or turbid media such as biomedical samples, and spatial resolution on a subcellular scale. We report the first applications of this new multimodal method to a range of systems, from a single cell to the fast reaction kinetics of a curing process, and the mechanochemical mapping of highly scattering biological samples.

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, heat capacity spectroscopy (3ω method), and viscosimetry have been used to study the dynamic glass transition of two glass-forming epoxy resins, poly [(phenyl glycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde] and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A. In spite of their rather simple molecular structure, the dynamics of these systems is characterized by two well-separated crossover regions where the relaxation times of main transition and the two secondary relaxations β and γ approach each other. The main transition has three parts: The a process at high temperature, the a′ process between the two crossover regions, and the α process at low temperatures. Both the γ-crossover region [around a temperature Tc(γ)∼(1.4–1.5)Tg and a relaxation time τc(γ)≈10−10 s] and the β-crossover region [around Tc(β)∼(1.1–1.2)Tg and τc(β)≈10−6 s] could be studied within the experimentally accessible frequency–temperature window. Different typical crossover properties are observed in the two regions. The γ-crossover region is characterized by onset of the (a′,α) process, with a relaxation time about one decade greater than that of the quasicontinuous (a,γ) trace. The β-crossover region is characterized, besides splitting of main andβ relaxation times, by a change in the temperature dependence of the main-relaxation time as reflected by a bend in the Stickel plot of the continuous (a′,α) trace, the separation of individual temperature dependences of different transport properties such as impurity-ions diffusion coefficient and viscosity, and a temperature-dependent main relaxation time that starts to be in accordance (at lower temperatures) with the Adam–Gibbs model. The cooperativity of the main process between the γ and β crossover seems to be small. Below the β crossover, cooperativity increases up to values of order Nα∼100 near Tg, and configurational entropy seems to correlate with the main relaxation time.

We report the observation of gravitational waves from two binary black hole coalescences during the fourth observing run of the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA detector network, GW241011 and GW241110. The sources of these two signals are characterized by rapid and precisely measured primary spins, nonnegligible spin–orbit misalignment, and unequal mass ratios between their constituent black holes. These properties are characteristic of binaries in which the more massive object was itself formed from a previous binary black hole merger and suggest that the sources of GW241011 and GW241110 may have formed in dense stellar environments in which repeated mergers can take place. As the third-loudest gravitational-wave event published to date, with a median network signal-to-noise ratio of 36.0, GW241011 furthermore yields stringent constraints on the Kerr nature of black holes, the multipolar structure of gravitational-wave generation, and the existence of ultralight bosons within the mass range 10 −13 –10 −12 eV.
