Polar-orbiting satellites have been widely used for detecting sea fog because of their wide coverage and high spatial and spectral resolution. FengYun-3D (FY-3D) is a Chinese satellite that provides global sea fog observation. From January 2021 to October 2022, the backscatter and virtual file manager products from CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) were used to label samples of different atmospheric conditions in FY-3D images, including clear sky, sea fog, low stratus, fog below low stratus, mid–high-level clouds, and fog below the mid–high-level clouds. A 13-dimensional feature matrix was constructed after extracting and analyzing the spectral and texture features of these samples. In order to detect daytime sea fog using a 13-dimensional feature matrix and CALIPSO sample labels, four supervised classification models were developed, including Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Neural Network. The accuracy of each model was evaluated and compared using a 10-fold cross-validation procedure. The study found that the SVM, KNN, and Neural Network performed equally well in identifying low stratus, with 85% to 86% probability of detection (POD). As well as identifying the basic components of sea fog, the SVM model demonstrated the highest POD (93.8%), while the KNN had the lowest POD (92.4%). The study concludes that the SVM, KNN, and Neural Network can effectively distinguish sea fog from low stratus. The models, however, were less effective at detecting sub-cloud fog, with only 11.6% POD for fog below low stratus, and 57.4% POD for fog below mid–high-level clouds. In light of this, future research should focus on improving sub-cloud fog detection by considering cloud layers.

Remote sensing technology plays a crucial role in the rapid and wide-scale monitoring of water quality, which is of great significance for water pollution prevention and control. In this study, the downstream and nearshore areas of the Huaihe River Basin were selected as the study area. By utilizing spectral information from standard solution measurements in the laboratory and in situ water quality data matched with satellite spatiotemporal data, inversion models for total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) water quality parameters were developed. The validation results using field measurements demonstrated that the inversion models performed well, with coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.7302 and 0.8024 and root mean square errors of 0.02614 mg/L and 0.0368 mg/L for total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen, respectively. By applying the models to Sentinel-2 satellite images from 2022, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen concentrations in the study area were obtained. The ammonia nitrogen concentration ranged from 0.05 to 0.30 mg/L, while the total phosphorus concentration ranged from 0.10 to 0.40 mg/L. Overall, the distribution appeared to be stable. The southern region of the Guan River estuary showed slightly higher water quality parameter concentrations compared to the northern region, while the North Jiangsu Irrigation Main Canal estuary was affected by the dilution of river water, resulting in lower concentrations in the estuarine area.

The rapid growth of phytoplankton and microalgae has presented considerable environmental and societal challenges to the sustainable development of human society. Given the inherent limitations of satellite-based algal bloom detection techniques that rely on chlorophyll and fluorescence methods, this study proposes a method that employs hyperspectral data to calculate water chromatic indices (WCIs), including hue, saturation (S), dominant wavelength (λd), and integrated apparent visual wavelength (IAVW), to identify algal blooms. A global in situ hyperspectral dataset was constructed, comprising 13,110 entries, of which 9595 were for normal waters and 3515 for algal bloom waters. The findings of our investigation indicate statistically significant discrepancies in chromaticity parameters between normal and algal bloom waters, with a p-value of 0.05. It has been demonstrated that different algal blooms exhibit distinct chromatic characteristics. For algae of the same type, the chromaticity parameters increase exponentially with chlorophyll concentration for hue and λd, while S shows low correlation and IAVW displays a good linear relationship with chlorophyll concentration. The application of this method to the Bohai Sea (coastal) and Taihu Lake (inland water) for the extraction of algal blooms revealed a clear separation in chromaticity parameters between normal and algal bloom waters. Moreover, the method can be applied to satellite data, offering an alternative approach for the detection of algal blooms based on satellite data. The indices can serve as ground truth values for colorimetric indices and provide a benchmark for the validation of satellite chromatic products.

Cyanobacterial blooms are a widespread phenomenon in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, causing significant harm to the ecological environment. Lake Taihu is the third-largest freshwater lake in China. The region has been increasingly affected by cyanobacterial blooms, drawing greater attention from people. Currently, numerous models have been developed for detecting algal bloom based on spectral characteristics. However, the intuitive basis of optical detection lies in water color. Therefore, constructing an algal bloom detecting model from the perspective of chromaticity is worth exploring. This study constructed an algal bloom detecting model based on chromatic parameters, DFLH, and IAVW by using hyperspectral data from Lake Taihu. It further applied the model to the ZY-1E hyperspectral satellite for large-scale algal bloom monitoring. The threshold for detecting cyanobacterial blooms is defined as DFLH > 0.013 sr−1 and Hue Angle > 170.58 degrees; the threshold for the normal water is defined as DFLH < 0.013 sr−1. The parameter thresholds for the floating leaf vegetation range were defined as DFLH > 0.013 sr−1, Saturation < 0.07, and IAVW > 598 nm. Through the validation, in the modeling dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) value is 0.81 and the F1-score is 0.86. In the validation dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) value is 0.83 and the F1-score is 0.89. The model demonstrates good detecting performance. Regarding its application on the ZY-1E satellite, we validated the detection results accuracy through matching synchronized in situ algal density data. The results are as follows: OA is 0.95, and the F1-score is 0.95. The results above indicate that the algal bloom detection method developed in this study had a good accuracy in detecting algal blooms in Lake Taihu on 6 September 2020. This study provided the algae bloom detecting model based on water color characteristics in Lake Taihu, which had high detecting accuracy.

The thermal discharge from coastal power plants exchanges heat with the surrounding marine environment, potentially affecting the aquatic ecosystem. This study utilizes Landsat-series satellite data from 2008 to 2023 to extract the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of thermal discharges from the Xiangshan Harbor Guohua Power Plant (GPP) and the Wushashan Power Plant (WPP). Additionally, the study investigates the impact of thermal discharge on local aquatic life by examining the spatiotemporal distribution of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The results indicate that (1) the overall area of thermal rise in GPP and WPP shows a decreasing trend. The interannual variation in low thermal rise zones (+1 °C, +2 °C) is substantial, with significant seasonal differences mainly influenced by seasonal sea–air temperature differences, the flow velocity of seawater at the discharge outlet, and water depth. (2) The diffusion of thermal discharge is significantly affected by tides. The area of thermal rise is larger during ebb tide compared to flood tide, and during neap tide compared to mid-tide and spring tide. During the ebb tide of the neap tide period, the total area of thermal rise in WPP is approximately three times that of GPP. (3) There is a significant positive correlation between thermal discharge and concentrations of Chl-a. Thermal discharge has complex impacts on aquatic life, primarily positive. The findings of this study provide important references for analyzing the ecological impacts of thermal discharge from coastal power plants.

Jet formation is the decisive factor of penetrating power of shaped charge, coherence and stability contribute to penetration. In the same condition, multiple penetrating tests of the shaped charge with depleted uranium(DU) liner did not get the expected results. In order to study the jet forming characteristics of DU liner under static explosion condition, an X-ray photography experiment was designed, which turned out to show the jet being badly incoherent. To research the incoherence of DU shaped charge jet from principles of jet incoherence, supersonic collision worked out to be the reasons for incoherence of the shaped charge jet. This paper provides a method for structural optimization of DU shaped charge and DU liner processing, which has guiding significance for application of DU liner in high explosive antitank projectile.
