As a by-product of lignocellulosic depolymerization for furfural production, furfural residue (FR) is composed of residual cellulose, lignin, humic acid, and other small amounts of materials, which have high reuse value. However, due to the limitation of furfural production scale and production technology, the treatment of FR has many problems such as high yield, concentrated stacking, strong acidity, and difficult degradation. This leads to the limited treatment methods and high treatment cost of furfural residue. At present, most of the furfural enterprises can only be piled up at will, buried in soil, or directly burned. The air, soil, and rivers are polluted and the ecological balance is destroyed. Therefore, how to deal with furfural residue reasonably needs to be solved. In this review, value-added products for furfural residue conversion are described in detail in the fields of soil culture, catalytic hydrolysis, thermal decomposition, and porous adsorption. The future studies reporting the FR to convert value-added products could find guidance from this review to achieve specific goals.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an efficient method for detecting the content of carbon and nitrogen in many materials, which solves the problems of the time-consuming and high-cost traditional chemical analysis method. To quickly detect the carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N) for the anaerobic fermentation (AF) feedstock using NIRS, a genetic simulated annealing algorithm (GSA) is presented based on a genetic algorithm combined with a simulated annealing algorithm. By combining GSA with backward interval partial least squares (BiPLS), we construct a BiPLS-GSA algorithm to optimize the characteristic wavelength variables of NIRS; this algorithm significantly reduced the number of wavelength variables involved in modeling and effectively improved the detection accuracy and efficiency of the model. The determination coefficients, root mean squared error, mean relative error (MRE) and residual predictive deviation for the validation set in the BiPLS-GSA regression model were 0.9067, 7.6676, 5.5274%, and 3.5626, respectively. Meanwhile, compared to the entire spectrum model, the MRE was decreased by 16.54% in the BiPLS-GSA-based model. The research in this paper improves the adaptability of the prediction model based on optimizing sensitive wavelength variables for C/N, which provides a new way for rapid and accurate measurement of the C/N of AF feedstock.

To solve the difficulty of lignocellulose hydrolysis and the formation of crusted scum in anaerobic fermentation, various parts of corn stover, i.e., pith, rind and leaf, were subjected to a two-phase processing including aerobic hydrolysis (AH) and anaerobic fermentation. The results showed that AH significantly broke down the lignin structure of the various components of corn stover and increased the rate of lignin degradation. After 16 h of AH, the lignin degradation rates of the pith, rind and leaf were 4.20%, 3.91% and 4.90%, respectively, and the acetic acid produced accounted for more than 60% of the total amount of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ethanol. After hydrolyzing the pith and rind for 12 h and the leaf for 8 h, the maximum methane yields of fresh mass volatile solid (VS) were 323 mL g−1, 251 mL g−1 and 264 mL g−1, respectively, which were increased by 35.02%, 30.05% and 8%, respectively, while the fermentation cycle of T90 (90% of the total gas production) was shortened by 4–5 days. After hydrolyzing the rind and leaf for 12 h and the pith for 16 h, the thicknesses of the scum layer were only 7.1%, 13.6% and 18%, respectively, of that of the untreated group, indicating that AH coupled with anaerobic fermentation can effectively degrade lignin, reduce the thickness of the scum layer and increase the methane yield.

Mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion reactors (MR and TR) for the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) were tested to reveal the differential microbial responses to increasing organic loading rate (OLR). MR exhibited faster adaptation and better performance at an OLR range of 1.0–2.5 g VS·L−1·d−1, with average profiles of a biogas yield of 0.38 L/gVSadded*d at 0.5 g/L*d OLR and 0.69 L/gVSadded*d at 2.5 g/L*d OLR, whereas TR had a biogas yield of 0.07 L/gVSadded*d at 0.5 g/L*d OLR and 0.44 L/gVSadded*d at 2.5 g/L*d OLR. The pyrosequencing results of amplicons revealed the microbial mechanisms of OFMSW anaerobic digestion. Larger shifts in the bacteria composition were observed in the TR with OLR elevation. For methanogens in both reactors, Methanothrix dominated in the MR while Methanosarcina was favored in the TR. Moreover, analysis of the mode and efficiency of metabolism between the MR and TR demonstrated different performances with more efficiency related to the limiting hydrolytic acid step.
