Assessing travel and tourism competitiveness (T&TC) is becoming an issue of paramount importance for stakeholders, mainly policymakers and practitioners. The availability of new databases such as the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) has boosted this interest. This chapter contributes to the current literature in this field with an assessment of the T&TC of 136 world tourist destinations. In doing so, two well-known approaches are employed: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with endogenous common weights, and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solutions (TOPSIS). World tourist destinations are ranked using these approaches, and both of the resulting rankings are then compared to the ranking provided by the WEF. Lastly, further analysis is carried out aimed at determining the main pillars and sub-pillars of T&TC, as a way to provide relevant insights to policymakers and practitioners. Our conclusion is that the two proposed methods are valid candidates for measuring the T&TC of world tourism destinations.

Fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) are a very important source of the protein intake of the European Union (EU) citizens. Despite the importance, the knowledge on labelling is still scarce. Two important issues regarding the labelling preferences of 27732 EU residents (the criteria interrelationship as well as the relationship that exists at the country level) will be assessed through a method based on a modified Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relation (CFPR) that uses the Geometric Bonferroni Mean (GBM) operator. The results show that not all the EU countries are homogeneous, so the subsidiarity principle might have been applicable. Our results also contribute to the strand of the fishery and aquaculture market. Policy implications, as well as future research studies, are discussed.

The European Union (EU) is the largest market in nominal terms for fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs), partly due to the away-from-home consumption of these products in restaurants and food outlets. In view of this, it is necessary to identify the main determinants of the away-from-home consumption patterns in order to propose strategies that could increase the consumption of FAPs. Following this, ordered probit models were estimated alongside their marginal effects to identify the most relevant factors determining the frequency of away-from-home consumption of FAPs in the EU28, using a representative sample of 27732 EU residents. We found that those in the highest classes of society are most likely to consume FAPs away-from-home more frequently. Also, the most important reasons for consuming FAPs more frequently away-from-home are that they are less expensive than other foods, taste good, and are healthy and easy to digest. In addition, among the different nationalities, British consumers are more likely to consume FAPs away-from-home. We also found that there is a higher frequency of away-from-home consumption of FAPs for consumers between the ages of 25 and 54, who do not live in rural areas, who prefer wild-caught and local and marine products, and that are very satisfied with their lives. The study contributes to the literature with the analysis of FAPs away-from-home consumption by using a large representative sample of EU28 consumers. The study is also relevant with respect to the extensive list of determinants that include factors related to the attitudes of respondents to FAPs and socio-demographic characteristics.

The inscription of a city as a World Heritage Site (WHS) acts as a catalyst for the tourist promotion. The brand creates a previous positive image of the city generating some tourists' expectations that might be difficult to fulfil. The aim of this paper is to shed some light on how different transport modes -private car, rental cars, train, bus and other transport modes- could mediate on the satisfaction construct. The methodology is based on a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria method. Our results show that rental cars visitors experience the minimum satisfaction in comparison with those who visit the city by bus who are the most satisfied. The findings can be strategically used by Valparaiso authorities and destination marketing managers to promote Valparaíso as a green destination WHS.

During March and April 2020, the European Union (EU) was the center of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many national governments imposed severe lockdown policies to mitigate the health crisis, but the citizens’ support to these policies was unknown. The aim of this paper was to analyze empirically how citizens in the EU have reacted towards the measures taken by the national governments. To this end, a microeconometric model (ordered probit) that explains the citizens’ satisfaction by a number of attitudes and sociodemographic factors was estimated using a wide database formed by 21,804 European citizens in 21 EU countries who responded a survey between 23 April and 1 May 2020. Our results revealed that Spaniards were the least satisfied citizens in comparison with Danes, Irelanders, Greeks, and Croats, who were the most satisfied nationals. The years of education and the social class also played a determinant role. We also found that the most important determinant was the political support to the government, and that those who were more worried by the economy and the protection of individual rights were usually more critical of the measures than those who were more worried by the health consequences.

Attitudes are important key drivers that affect consumers’ seafood consumption. The present investigation used a best–worst scaling approach to measure the level of importance and satisfaction of consumers’ attitudes towards the purchase of seabream and seabass in Gran Canaria (Spain). The investigation also compared the results of the best–worst scaling (BWS) approach with those of the traditional Likert-scale method and offers a different perspective of the results using an Importance–Satisfaction Analysis (ISA). The results indicate that the most important attributes concerned the hygiene and safety of the product, the health benefits, the freshness, the taste and the nutrients. At the same time, these attributes were ranked as those which satisfied consumers the most. However, some of the results obtained from the methodologies differed. The results suggest that, in the Likert-scale task, respondents might be overstating the importance and satisfaction of the attributes; while in the BWS, consumers were forced to evaluate a trade-off in the selection of the best and worst attributes in each scenario, so the task impeded, in principle, to define every attribute as very important and providing a high satisfaction. As a result, we consider that BWS offers more reliable and clearer results than traditional Likert-scale experiments.

This study presents a hybrid fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity of the ideal solution (TOPSIS) method (FTOPSIS) to analyze the coverage of a hypothetical EU ecolabel for fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) by integrating a synthetic indicator to determine the level of acceptance for the inclusion of different types of information apart from environmental issues, considering different stakeholders and other segments of analysis. Data were obtained from a public consultation of the EU on “ecolabels for FAPs” .The results indicate that ecolabels should not only include environmental issues but also other types of information, with social and ethical issues being the most relevant, followed by animal welfare issues, health and safety issues and food quality issues. The findings also show that consumers, producers and stakeholders who are more interventionist and support the fact that public bodies and governments should be involved in the control of eco-labeling are more accepting of including additional information apart from environmental issues. Synthetic indicators (SIs) have also been found to be mostly inelastic, except for the owners of ecolabels on social and ethical issues. The implications of the future implementation of the EU ecolabel for FAPs are discussed based on the findings.

Residents’ perception towards tourism has been studied in previous literature, but, in many cases, the analysis is based on studies of the impacts of new developments. In this study, we analyse the main determinant factors of residents’ perception in Gran Canaria, a well-known mature and mass tourism destination in Europe. In addition to tourism, the analysis is extended towards the tourists themselves after more than 50 years of residents and tourists interaction. The analysis is based on a stratified random sample of 504 residents and ordinal logit models that extract the main determinant factors that explain different residents’ perceptions towards tourism: (1) creation of new jobs; (2) development of infrastructures; (3) generation of wealth and economic growth; (4) the economy of the municipality; and towards tourists: (5) purchasing power; (6) behaviour; and (7) respect for the environment. The main determinant factors, the varied nuances and other third variables involved are obtained and commented. The article contributes empirically shedding some light in the complex phenomenon of residents’ perception towards tourism and tourists.

The European Union (EU) is the world’s largest market for fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) in nominal terms. Given the importance of these products, EU authorities and policy-makers are continuously monitoring consumer preferences and attitudes, analysing whether or not the implementation of EU policies and regulations improves the market conditions. For example, the Eurobarometer (European Union, 2018a) surveyed 27732 EU residents including a specific module to analyse the fishery and aquaculture EU market. In this study, the dataset is used to estimate Ordered Probit models using effects coding and their marginal effects to identify the main determinants of the frequency of FAPs at-home consumption. Results indicate that the highest probability to consume more frequently FAPs is related to considering that one of the main reasons for buying or eating fishery and aquaculture products is because they are healthy, while the highest probability to consume less frequently FAPs is related to consumers who do not understand at all the information accompanying the products. Similarly, other important reasons for consuming FAPs more frequently are their good taste and low relative price. Also, results indicate a higher frequency of consumption of FAPs for those consumers who are over 55 years of age, are wealthy, have a wild product preference, live in a household of 3 persons or more and are very satisfied with their lives. To our best knowledge, there is not a similar approach in the current literature that considers such an extensive sample which is representative of all the countries that conformed the EU28. Results provide valuable information especially for producers and authorities in terms of marketing and policy analysis.

Although hotels usually have clients from different nationalities, the research analyses the multicultural effects on hotel customers’ satisfaction is still scant. This paper aims to contribute to the realm of hotel management by providing interesting managerial insights into how different nationalities perceive hotel attributes differently using two hotels located in Saint Petersburg as a case study. To that end, a fuzzy hybrid method based on the technique of similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS) is proposed. The results are based on a sample of 447 guests and show that: (1) nationality influences the hotel guests’ satisfaction; (2) customers are, in general, more elastic in three-star hotels than in four-star hotels; (3) welcome gifts in the room and in the bathroom are key attributes in the clients’ satisfaction; and (4) Italian and Spanish guests are the least and the most satisfied customers, respectively. The study offers a number of important managerial insights to hotel managers and practitioners. The average figures obtained by general hotel satisfaction surveys usually hinder important peculiarities that need to be addressed when managers develop strategic satisfaction enhancement programmes. In particular, our results show that managers need to adapt the programmes to the differences observed by nationalities.

This study investigates airline passenger satisfaction and service quality in the U.S. market, employing fuzzy logic and fuzzy segmentation methods. Elasticities are then determined to evaluate the sensitivity of satisfaction based on service quality attributes. The survey was developed consistent with functional and technical quality and from existing airline service quality and satisfaction literature. Data were collected online using Amazon Mechanical Turk, resulting in 624 respondents. The results show that both technical and functional quality play a role in determining satisfaction with airlines, though passengers are more satisfied with functional quality than technical quality. Overall, a majority of airline passengers are indifferent; they are neither satisfied nor unsatisfied toward airline service quality. Additionally, this research introduced additional factors in the analysis that have not been previously researched laying the groundwork for future research.

Gastronomy is an essential component of cultural heritage for tourists. Culinary pleasures become motivations that determine the choice of destination and, at the same time, an essential variable for the composition of tourist satisfaction in the travelling experience. The aim of the study is to analyse the gastronomic experiences of the foreign visitors (tourists and excursionists) who visit Córdoba, a remarkable World Heritage Site of Spain, through a fuzzy clustering segmentation method. The results of this research highlight the existence of three tourist segments named as foodies, non-foodies and intermediaries on the basis of their perceptions regarding the gastronomic experiences of the city. We conclude that the previous knowledge of local dishes such as Salmorejo, Rabo de Toro y Flamenquín is one of the main determinants to have a higher probability to belong to the ‘foodies’ segment, meanwhile the lack of knowledge also increases the probability to belong ‘the no-foodies’ segment. Interesting insights for policy makers, destination marketers and restaurateurs are discussed.

Since the 1960s, Halal industry and Islamic Finance have grown in parallel without implementing adequate synergies. Halal tourism is a fast-growing sector of Halal industry, and the connection with Islamic Finance has hardly been researched. The aim of this paper is to analyse whether Islamic Finance can play an active role in developing Halal Tourism. This topic has not been empirically researched in the literature. The methodology is based on a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria method that satisfactorily handles the imprecise nature associated with the information provided by Likert scales. Our results show how culture has a direct moderating effect on the degree of agreement that respondents have over the active role that IF can play, finding that English respondents agree more than Spanish and Arabs respondents. Similarly, our results also show that the knowledge of the Halal concept makes respondents agree more with the active role of Islamic finance. This study provides insights to the main stakeholders, and it can be strategically used to foster adequate synergy between Islamic Finance and the development of Halal tourist products as a way to specialize in a more sustainable tourism.

The analysis of trust in the governments and the authorities has been a source of study in recent years, especially by the impact it has on facilitating economic growth and stability in developing countries. This paper analyses the institutional trust in Ecuador using data from an adapted survey of the European Social Survey. A synthetic indicator of institutional trust of Ecuadorian citizens is obtained by applying a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria method. The analysis is based on six different dimensions, namely: (1) The Local Government (City Hall); (2) The Judicial System; (3) The Politicians; (4) Political Parties; (5) The National Parliament; and (6) the United Nations. The results obtained for the country, the nine provincial conglomerates and the gender segments show that institutional trust is not homogeneous among the provincial zones and that males trust more on institutions than females. The paper offers interesting insights to practitioners, researchers, academics, political scientists, and policymakers interested in Latin America. Suggestions for future research in the area, having in mind the existing data availability limitations, are provided.

Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) have become an important tool for assessing the preferences of consumers for finfish seafood products. This investigation presents a systematic literature review of studies performed in the last 20 years (2000–2019) that use DCEs to analyse consumers’ preferences for finfish products, with the purpose to identify the main insights of consumer behaviour towards these products, the most used attributes for this type of experiments and to discuss and compare some willingness to pay estimations. We found that origin was the most used attribute for this kind of experiments, while other important factors were the harvest method, a specific certification label and the species or products considered. The WTP estimates evidenced that consumers are willing to pay premiums for domestic products, while similarly, wild products were preferred over farmed products. Also, there were higher WTP estimates for certified products, in which specific certification labels were better options rather than just claiming that the product was certified or not. All claims and labels related to sustainability, nutritional, health and safety information provided premiums that consumers were willing to pay, however, the importance differed depending on the type of label or claim, the country and species. Future research should consider the influence of being or not the main purchaser in the household, as it might affect the WTP values. Also, given the importance, future research extensions using DCEs are needed on the Chinese and Asian finfish market.

PurposeThe purpose of this investigation is to develop a hybrid fuzzy TOPSIS methodology in order to understand in a practical and integrated way, the consuming and buying behavior of EU residents towards Fishery and Aquaculture Products (FAPs), with an emphasis in the consumption and buying frequency.Design/methodology/approachData were obtained from the Special Eurobarometer Survey (European Union, 2018b), which is a survey of 27,732 EU residents with different socio-demographic characteristics that represent the 28 EU countries. A hybrid fuzzy TOPSIS methodology that synthesizes the consuming and buying behavior of the EU residents toward FAPs was developed.FindingsThe results show that among the countries, Spain has the highest consumption and buying patterns of FAPs, while among the generations it corresponds to the residents born between 1928 and 1945. In addition, there are important differences that depend on the country of residence as well as the generation of the residents. The elasticity analysis evidenced that marketing strategies would have the biggest impact in the countries located in the Central-Eastern zone of the EU and on the generation formed by the people born after 1980.Originality/valueAlthough in the literature there are many studies that aimed to understand the behavior of consumers for FAPs, few investigations have focused on analyzing and integrating both the consumption and buying behavior, and to our best knowledge, there are no studies providing a methodology that allow making comparisons between different countries regarding the consumption and buying behavior of FAPs.

Research question: This paper aims to determine whether race performance has an impact on re-participation behaviour in trail running events. Own performance is a key driver of satisfaction in sport events, but this variable has received less attention than others in the empirical literature about re-participation intentions, even less so for trail running. Research methods: This paper employed time-series data to analyse re-participation behaviour of trail runners: our dataset includes all participants in the multi-race Transgrancanaria event (Canary Islands, Spain) between 2008 and 2018. A logistic regression (n = 10,170) aims to establish a link between race performance and the propensity to return to the event. Results and findings: Results show that improving own ranking within the same race has positive impacts on re-participation behaviour for both locals and visiting participants. Progressing to a longer race over time boosts loyalty for locals, while finishing in the top ten for a given category also motivates further participation, but only for non-locals. Implications: These findings have implications for the race organiser as they shed light on some key drivers of re-participation that can justify the introduction of measures to incentivise loyalty by taking advantage of the broad choice of events on offer. This can be achieved by offering discounts and other benefits linked to performance or race progression.

Tourist destinations have evolved throughout the world because governments invest on developing a tourist sector. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life of the local residents. For this reason, the impacts of tourism, both positive and negative, need to be measured from the local residents’ perspective. This study segments local residents according to their perception on tourism. A hybrid fuzzy segmentation method was applied to a sample of 504 local residents in Gran Canaria. Three representative profiles are obtained for two scenarios: (1) extreme tourist lovers, extreme tourist haters and ambivalents and (2) lovers, haters and ambivalents. Contributions to the body of knowledge and policy implications are discussed. A future research agenda is given.
