Plasma catalysis, biomedical applications or atomic layer deposition at atmospheric pressure all make use of non-thermal plasmas in contact with a wide variety of surfaces. As the presence of a target (substrate) has been shown to modify the plasma in addition to the plasma modifying the target, it is reasonable to describe and study the plasma-surface as one system. This work shows how the presence of dielectric and metallic targets influences a kHz AC-driven discharge in a He plasma jet. Next to bringing the absolute values of the axial electric field along the plume of the jet, the presence of the surface has been shown to significantly elongate both the plume and the electric field profile. In addition, when a dielectric target is placed closer than the maximum length of the freely expanding jet, the electric field profile is enhanced only in the vicinity of the dielectric, typically between 0.3 and 2 mm above the target surface. The maximum measured relative increase is 31%, for 1000 SCCM flow with the target at 7 mm distance, when the electric field increased from 14.1 kV cm −1 for the freely expanding jet to 32.6 kV cm −1 when the jet was impinging on glass. Finally, a grounded metallic target enhances the electric field compared to the glass target only within a very thin layer just above the surface, typically about 0.2 mm. The highest measured electric field was 40.1 kV cm −1 at a grounded metallic target 12 mm away from the nozzle, for 1000 SCCM of helium flow. The discussion on the effects of the flow on the electric field profile are supported by the visualization of the flow. The discussion brings, among other, the comparison of properties between the 30 kHz AC-driven system and the 5 kHz pulsed jet.

The study of plasma–liquid interactions has evolved as a new interdisciplinary research field driven by the development of plasma applications for water purification, biomedicine and agriculture. Electrical discharges in contact with liquids are a rich source of reactive species in gas and in liquid phase which can be used to break polluting compounds in water or to induce healing processes in medical applications. An understanding of the fundamental processes in plasma, and of the interaction of plasma with liquid, enables the optimization of plasma chemistry in large-scale plasma devices with liquid electrodes. This article reviews recent progress and insight in the research of low-temperature plasmas in contact with liquids at atmospheric pressure. The work mainly focuses on the physical processes and phenomena in these plasmas with an attempt to provide a review of the latest and the most important research outcomes in the literature. The article provides an overview of the breakdown mechanisms in discharges in contact with liquid, emphasizing the recently studied specifities of plasma jets impinging on the liquid surface, and discharge generation with a high overvoltage. It also covers innovative approaches in the generation of plasma in contact with liquids. Novel phenomena detected by the imaging techniques and measurement of discharge parameters in the reviewed discharges are also presented. The results, the techniques that are applied, and those that may be applied in further studies, are listed and discussed. A brief overview of the applications focuses on the original approaches and new application fields. Future challenges and gaps in knowledge regarding further advancement in applications are summarized.

Nicotine degradation efficiency in water solutions was studied using a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Two different treatments were applied: direct treatment, the recirculation of the solution through a DBD reactor, and indirect treatment, the bubbling of the gas from the DBD through the porous filter into the solution. In a separate experiment, samples spiked with nicotine in double distilled water (ddH 2 O) and tap water were studied and compared after both treatments. Furthermore, the effects of the homogeneous catalysts, namely, Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 , were tested in the direct treatment. Nicotine degradation efficiency was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. A degradation efficiency of 90% was achieved after the direct treatment catalyzed with Fe 2+ . In order to analyze the biodegradability, mineralization level, and toxicity of the obtained solutions, after all degradation procedures the values of the following parameters were determined: total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, and the Artemia salina toxicity test. The results showed that an increase in biodegradability was obtained, after all treatments. A partial nicotine mineralization was achieved and the mortality of the A. salina organism decreased in the treated samples, all of which indicating the effective removal of nicotine and the creation of less toxic solutions. Nicotine degradation products were identified using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a linear ion trap Orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometer and a simple mechanism for oxidative degradation of nicotine in non-thermal plasma systems is proposed.

In this paper, raw jute fabric was subjected to atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (at 150 or 300 Hz) to enhance its wettability, i.e., capillarity and wetting time. Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to assess the changes in the fabrics’ surface chemistry and morphology induced by plasma treatments. The obtained results revealed that both plasma treatments enhanced the wettability of jute fabrics, which could be ascribed to the changes in the fibers’ surface chemistry (the removal of non-cellulosic components, exposure of the cellulose molecules, and oxidation) and morphology (increased roughness due to etching of the surface layers and partial fibrillation). Capillary rise heights increased by approximately 1.8 and 1.9 times, and wetting times were 35 and 34 times shorter 24 h after the plasma treatment at 150 and 300 Hz, respectively. Special attention was given to the aging effect of plasma treatment indicated no significant changes in the fabrics’ capillarity and wetting time after 28 and 7 days, respectively, proving the durability of the effects of plasma treatment. Plasma-treated raw jute fabrics could be used as water-binding geo-prebiotic polysaccharide supports to provide the necessary water for the initial growth of cyanobacterial biocrusts. The lack of moisture is the main constraint in biocrust development after cyanobacterial inoculation. The combination of such water-supportive fabrics and cyanobacterial strains could be used for the rehabilitation of various degraded lands, sediments, and substrates, as well as for air and water pollution control.
