The utilisation of hydrogen in ships has important potential in terms of achieving the decarbonisation of waterway transport, which produces approximately 3% of the world’s total emissions. However, the utilisation of hydrogen drives in maritime and inland shipping is conditioned by the efficient and safe storage of hydrogen as an energy carrier on ship decks. Regardless of the type, the constructional design and the purpose of the aforesaid vessels, the preferred method for hydrogen storage on ships is currently high-pressure storage, with an operating pressure of the fuel storage tanks amounting to tens of MPa. Alternative methods for hydrogen storage include storing the hydrogen in its liquid form, or in hydrides as adsorbed hydrogen and reformed fuels. In the present article, a method for hydrogen storage in metal hydrides is discussed, particularly in a certified low-pressure metal hydride storage tank—the MNTZV-159. The article also analyses the 2D heat conduction in a transversal cross-section of the MNTZV-159 storage tank, for the purpose of creating a final design of the shape of a heat exchanger (intensifier) that will help to shorten the total time of hydrogen absorption into the alloy, i.e., the filling process. Based on the performed 3D calculations for heat conduction, the optimisation and implementation of the intensifier into the internal volume of a metal hydride alloy will increase the performance efficiency of the shell heat exchanger of the MNTZV-159 storage tank. The optimised design increased the cooling power by 46.1%, which shortened the refuelling time by 41% to 2351 s. During that time, the cooling system, which comprised the newly designed internal heat transfer intensifier, was capable of eliminating the total heat from the surface of the storage tank, thus preventing a pressure increase above the allowable value of 30 bar.

Pyrolysis together with gasification and combustion create a group of so called thermic processes. Unlike the combustion it is based on thermic decomposition of organic materials without any access of oxidative media. Within the pyrolytic process, three main fractions are created: solid residue, pyrolytic gas and organic liquid product - pyrolytic oil. The presented article examines the effects of pyrolysis operational conditions (above all, temperature) on gas products, solid residues and liquid fractions.

For the safe operation of a hydrogen-powered car, one of the strategic requirements is to design the drive chain so that it is burdened with the least possible risk. At the same time, in order to be able to use it in normal operation, it is necessary to create a risk management system throughout the life of the car so that risks are minimized to the level of their acceptability not only by customers but also by a comprehensive infrastructure during its technical life. Experience has shown that one of the decisive risks in the operation of a hydrogen-powered car is the leakage of hydrogen from the car’s fuel system. The article analyzes the pressure effects on obstacles in the explosion of 1 m3 of a stoichiometric mixture of hydrogen and air. The analysis of the instantaneous pressures as a function of time describes the possible consequences for the human body and the surrounding objects with regard to the distance from the center of the explosion.

The paper deals with possibilities to apply a new developed software support for simulation programme ANSYS CFX. A direct export of heat-transfer coefficients into variables used under edge conditions as well as of physical properties of gas mixtures into material properties during simulation solution of technical tasks means a significant saving of time. The paper summarizes in detail description of the software for calculation of heat-transfer coefficient during free convection (HTC-FC) and of material properties of gas mixture (MPGM) that enable to export calculated data directly into the text files which can be imported then into the programme ANSYS CFX.

The hydrogen compression that occurs in a metal hydride compressor is based on the chemical and thermal processes of hydrogen absorption and desorption into an intermetallic structure of metals. The concept presented in this article is centred on the use of an optimal metal alloy that is capable of absorbing hydrogen into its structure at a low temperature and pressure. After such an alloy is heated up, its pressure will significantly increase, and this facilitates the compression of hydrogen without it being in direct contact with the movable parts of the compressor. As a result, the safety of the compression process is increased. The hydrogen compressor contains a pair of tandem metal hydride (MH) tanks with an integrated heat exchanger. The tanks are alternately heated and cooled, so that while hydrogen is absorbed in one of the tanks it is concurrently desorbed in the other tank. The unique nature of the prototype single-stage metal hydride compressor consists in using a heat pump that facilitated a significant reduction of the consumed electric energy in the heat transport between the tandem-arranged tanks. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the possibility of integrating a heat pump as a source of heat and cold for the process of absorption- and desorption-based hydrogen compression. With the prototype MH compressor presented in this article, a compression ratio of ε = 2.0 was achieved while the tanks were operated at temperatures ranging from 12 to 55 °C. In a single cycle, the compressor worked with 166 litres of hydrogen, which was absorbed into 3.125 kg of the La0.85Ce0.15Ni5 alloy. The average heating power that was achieved on the side of the condenser that heated the MH1 tank was 362 W, and the cooling power that was achieved on the evaporator side was 300 W. The achieved value of the heat pump COP was 2.92.

The present article describes the diagnostics of a compressor that is compressing a mixture of H2 and N2 on the basis of the results that were obtained by operational measurements of the flow rates and temperatures at selected compressor sites, as well as of the acoustic pressure levels during the full loading thereof. The obtained data were subsequently used to determine the limit conditions of the compressor operations in terms of the cooling capacity. A thermodynamic analysis of the compression of the H2/N2 gas mixture was carried out with subsequent heat and energy flow calculation and the determination of the minimum cooling water flow rate that is required to ensure the continuous compressor operations.
