Recent insights into the influence of nutrition on immune system components have driven the development of dietary strategies targeting the prevention and management of major metabolic-inflammatory diseases. This review summarizes the bidirectional relationship between nutrition and immunocompetence, beginning with an overview of immune system components and their functions. It examines the effects of nutritional status, dietary patterns, and food bioactives on systemic inflammation, immune cell populations, and lymphoid tissues, as well as their associations with infectious and chronic disease pathogenesis. The mechanisms by which key nutrients influence immune constituents are delineated, focusing on vitamins A, D, E, C, and B, as well as minerals including zinc, iron, and selenium. Also highlighted are the immunomodulatory effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as bioactive phenolic compounds and probiotics, given their expanding relevance. Each section addresses the implications of nutritional and nutraceutical interventions involving these nutrients within the broader context of major infectious, metabolic, and inflammatory diseases. This review further underscores that, while targeted nutrient supplementation can effectively restore immune function to optimal levels, caution is necessary in certain cases, as it may increase morbidity in specific diseases. In other instances, dietary counseling should be integrated to ensure that therapeutic goals are achieved safely and effectively.

This scoping review aimed to determine the somatotype of modern elite athletes across various sports. The literature search followed the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. Four databases were consulted, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Clarivate InCites, as well as platforms such as Google Scholar, Taylor & Francis Online, Books Ovid, CAB eBooks, MyiLibrary, and Core Collection. Eligibility criteria included articles published between 1995 and 2024 involving athletes at the elite level, such as junior, senior, Olympic, first-division professionals, world-class competitors, national competitors, black belts, master athletes, non-professional athletes with at least 10 years of experience, those ranked in the national or international top 10, and high-level collegiate athletes. A total of 66 studies were included. Modern male elite athletes predominantly exhibited an endomorphic mesomorphic somatotype, whereas female athletes were classified as central. The present study was the first to synthesize data from 66 articles, encompassing athletes of varying elite levels, both males and females, while providing detailed information on age, weight, height, BMI, somatotype and its classification, and complemented by somatoplot references. Future research is recommended to include a greater diversity of sports and a more significant number of elite female athletes to enhance the representativeness of elite athletes.

At least half the population in industrialized countries suffers from obesity due to excessive accumulation of adipose tissue. Recently, rice (Oryza sativa) proteins have been considered valuable sources of bioactive peptides with antiadipogenic potential. In this study, the digestibility and bioaccessibility in vitro of a novel protein concentrate (NPC) from rice were determined through INFOGEST protocols. Furthermore, the presence of prolamin and glutelin was evaluated via SDS-PAGE, and their potential digestibility and the bioactivity of ligands against peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) were explored by BIOPEP UWM and HPEPDOCK. For the top candidates, molecular simulations were conducted using Autodock Vina to evaluate their binding affinity against the antiadipogenic region of PPARγ and their pharmacokinetics and drug-likeness using SwissADME. Simulating gastrointestinal digestion showed a recovery of 43.07% and 35.92% bioaccessibility. The protein banding patterns showed the presence of prolamin (57 kDa) and glutelin (12 kDa) as the predominant proteins in the NPC. The in silico hydrolysis predicts the presence of three and two peptide ligands in glutelin and prolamin fraction, respectively, with high affinity for PPARγ (≤160). Finally, the docking studies suggest that the prolamin-derived peptides QSPVF and QPY (−6.38 & −5.61 kcal/mol, respectively) have expected affinity and pharmacokinetic properties to act as potential PPARγ antagonists. Hence, according to our results, bioactive peptides resulting from NPC rice consumption might have an antiadipogenic effect via PPARγ interactions, but further experimentation and validation in suitable biological model systems are necessary to gain more insight and to provide evidence to support our in silico findings.

Colon cancer (CC) is the third most frequent neoplasm, with a considerably high mortality rate. Due to the side effects of conventional forms of CC treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy), several studies have focused on the use of medicinal plant derivatives to provide a green therapy for CC; although phytochemicals have shown promising results against CC, translating the results obtained in vitro and in vivo to the clinical setting remains a challenge. Indeed, like other orally applied medicines, medicinal plant derivatives have to cross different physiological barriers to reach the CC microenvironment, which considerably limits their dose-dependent therapeutic efficacy. On the other hand, phytocompounds are not free from biopharmaceutical drawbacks, so novel strategies using nanoparticles (NPs) have been proposed to overcome the physiological barriers of the body and provide controlled release of actives of interest. Accordingly, the current review provides an overview and discussion on the predisposing factors to CC and conventional treatment, the use of medicinal plants in CC treatment, and the advantages provided by NPs in the treatment of CC.

Kidney diseases represent an increasingly significant global public health challenge, with an estimated prevalence of around 10% among adults and a rising trend influenced by factors such as population aging and exposure to nephrotoxic agents. Given the limitations of conventional treatments, which often only slow disease progression and may cause adverse effects, there is growing interest in exploring alternative therapies based on natural compounds. Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly known for its ornamental use, has been widely used in traditional medicine in Mexico and other tropical regions due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Recently, its phytochemical profile has drawn scientific attention, particularly due to its high content of hydroxylated aromatic compounds such as flavonoids, terpenes, and phenolic acids, which may offer protective effects on kidney function. For this review, searches were conducted in specialized databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as platforms like ChEMBL and SWISS, selecting articles published between 2008 and 2025. This work aims to compile and critically analyze the available scientific literature on the nephroprotective potential of the phytochemicals found in S. trifasciata, and includes a preliminary exploration of their possible mechanisms of action using pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic prediction tools.
