Due to long-term exposure to high electrical field strength, heavy loads, and the complex climatic conditions in tropical coastal areas of China, widespread abnormal heating phenomena often occur in the operation of composite insulators in power transmission lines, posing a threat to the safe and stable operation of the power system. To study the ageing process of the silicone rubber sheath of composite insulators in the high-field, high-humidity, high-temperature, and high-salt-density environments along the coastal regions, this paper establishes a humidity–heat–electricity–salt spray accelerated ageing test platform and conducts ageing tests on silicone rubber materials for composite insulators under the coupled effect of multiple factors. The ageing characteristics of silicone rubber materials are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and other methods. The results show that the coupled ageing factors have an impact on the surface morphology of silicone rubber. The continuous depolymerization of PDMS molecular chains leads to a decrease in the content of groups related to the hydrophobicity of the material, resulting in a deterioration of its hydrophobicity. Moreover, the degradation of silicone rubber materials and the enhanced moisture absorption capacity lead to an increase in the dielectric loss tangent of the saturated moisture-absorbing medium, thereby causing abnormal heating of the sheath at the end of the composite insulator. The research findings of this study are of significant reference value for revealing the degradation mechanism of composite insulator silicone rubber sheaths in tropical island environments and improving the service life of composite insulators.
The condition and health of large oil-immersed power transformers’ insulation have a direct impact on the safety and stability of the power grid. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the aging characteristics of oil–paper insulation in power transformers. In this study, we developed a computational model for reclosing current calculation and multiphysics coupling models for magnetic-circuit-force, electrostatic field, and temperature field simulations. The calculated aging resulted in a mechanical stress of 8.71 MPa, an electric field strength of 2.26 × 106 V/m, and a temperature of 113.7 °C. We conducted combined electrical–thermal–mechanical aging tests on the oil–paper insulation and measured various insulating paper performance parameters at different aging stages. Our study revealed that both the mechanical and electrical properties of the insulating paper deteriorated in both aging groups. However, the changes were more pronounced in the electrical–thermal–mechanical aging group compared to the electrical–thermal aging group, indicating that mechanical stress accelerated the aging process of the insulating paper. In the early stages of aging, the rate of performance changes in the electrical–thermal aging group was similar to that in the electrical–thermal–mechanical aging group. However, as the aging time increased, the degradation of performance induced by mechanical aging became more significant. This suggests that the insulating paper’s resistance to mechanical damage, specifically short-circuit resistance, noticeably decreased after prolonged aging.
The deterioration of a composite insulator’s mandrel will cause a serious power-grid accident, so it is necessary to find the defect as soon as possible. Infrared imaging is an effective means to detect mandrel-deterioration defects, but sheath-aging defects will cause trouble to screen mandrel deterioration. Therefore, it is urgent to distinguish the two defects. In this paper, two composite insulators that are out of service with different heating characteristics are tested and analyzed, and the temperature-rise characteristics are analyzed by building a simulation model. The results show that the temperature rise of composite insulators with oxidative decomposition of epoxy resin is large, and the range usually extends from the hardware of the high-voltage side to several umbrella skirts. The temperature rise caused by the composite insulator with the fiber completely wrapped by epoxy resin is small, which mainly occurs from the hardware to the first umbrella skirt. The simulation model constructed in this paper is consistent with the experimental results, which verifies the accuracy of the model. The model can distinguish the mandrel-deterioration defect and sheath-aging defect, and has guiding significance and important reference value for the detection rate of the mandrel-deterioration composite insulator and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power grid.
Insulators are the basis of the stable operation of transmission lines, and it is particularly important to regularly detect the insulation performance of insulators. After several years of research, contactless space electric field detection technology for degraded insulators, based on an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) platform, has developed rapidly. However, the existing technology is only limited to the typical vertical/horizontal state research category and cannot apply to complex operating conditions such as attitude disturbance and path tilt. This paper builds a simulation model of insulators at a voltage level of 220 kV by COMSOL finite element software and analyzes the space electric field distribution characteristics of degraded insulators and the influence of different surface conditions, attitude disturbance, path tilt, etc., on the space electric field distribution of insulators. To reduce the error of UAV detection under complex operating conditions of insulators, a method for detecting the electric field of degraded insulators based on sensitive insulators is proposed and verified by experiments. According to the research results, surface conditions of insulators have little influence on their space electric field, while the attitude disturbance and path tilt of UAVs have a great influence on the electric field of insulators. Sensitive insulators at a level of voltage below 220 kV are generally located at the low-voltage end. The principles of sensitive insulators are combined with the space electric field measurement method to measure the space electric field distribution, thus effectively judging whether there are degraded insulators in the string. The method specified in the paper greatly improves the accuracy and detection efficiency of the contactless electric field detection of insulators, which is of great significance for the promotion of the electric field detection method of insulators in practical applications.
Abnormal heating of composite insulators of high-voltage transmission lines concentrate at its end, especially in a high-humidity environment. In order to study the influence of end-sheath aging and moisture absorption on abnormal heating of composite insulators, in this paper, we first discuss the appearance test, temperature rise test, and dielectric characteristic test conducted on 110 kV decommissioned composite insulators. Test results indicated the temperature rise in composite insulators increased with ambient humidity, but temperature rise was not severely affected by surface contamination of its shed and sheath; in dry environments, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor of high-voltage end sheaths are higher than of those of medium- and low-voltage end sheaths, and the loss effect becomes more severe after moisture absorption in a high-humidity environment. After the tests, the authors established a COMSOL simulation model of composite insulators, to analyze changes in the electric field and thermal field of the end sheath of composite insulators due to the coupling of electric and thermal fields. It was concluded that the dielectric constant of a high-voltage end sheath of the composite insulator increased after moisture absorption, distorting the partial electric field on the surface; meanwhile, the dielectric loss factor increased significantly after water molecules intruded into the aging layer of the sheath as polar molecules. Therefore, the dielectric loss (leakage conductance loss and lossy polarization loss) caused by aging and moisture absorption of the sheath surface under partially high field strength in the high-humidity environment was the leading cause of abnormal heating at the high-voltage end of composite insulators. The conclusion of this paper serves as an important reference for revealing the causes of abnormal heating of composite insulators in high-humidity environments and the influence mechanism of external factors on abnormal heating.

Abnormal heating of composite insulators on ultra‐high voltage (UHV) transmission lines is widespread under high humidity and heat in southern China. The infrared imaging technology can be used of quickly and effectively detect insulators with abnormal heating and determine their defect types. However, it may cause misjudgement when the infrared images are not clear. A super‐resolution reconstruction method of infrared images of composite insulators with abnormal heating based on improved super‐resolution generative adversarial networks (SRGAN) is proposed in this paper, and the dense residual network in SRGAN is perfected by introducing the residual channel attention (ResCA). This method overcomes the problems that the resolution of images reconstructed by traditional methods is not significantly improved, and images are too smooth, and the edge details are easily lost. Compared with the traditional methods, the five reference‐free image quality evaluation indexes of the image reconstructed by the improved SRGAN are increased by −0.73% to 63.84%. Further the effectiveness and superiority of the improved SRGAN are verified by comparing the changes in the distribution of grey values of infrared images before and after reconstruction. Finally, the improved SRGAN is used to perform super‐resolution reconstruction of the low‐resolution infrared image examples.
