After a coal mine is closed, the coal rock mass could undergo weathering deterioration and strength reduction due to factors such as stress and groundwater, which in turn changes the stress and bearing capacity of the fractured rock mass in the abandoned goaf, leading to secondary or multiple surface deformations in the goaf. Currently, the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of the surface deformation of closed mines remains unclear, and there is no integrated monitoring and prediction model for closed mines. Therefore, this study proposed to construct an integrated monitoring and prediction model for closed mines using small baseline subset (SBAS) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and a deep learning-based long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network algorithm to achieve evolution pattern and dynamic prediction of spatiotemporal surface deformation of closed mines. Taking a closed mine in the western part of Xuzhou, China, as an example, based on Sentinel-1A SAR data between 21 December 2015, and 11 January 2021, SBAS InSAR technology was used to obtain the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of the surface during the 5 years after mine closure. The results showed that the ground surface subsided in the early stage of mine closure and then uplifted. In 5 years, the maximum subsidence rate in the study area is −43 mm/a, and the cumulative maximum subsidence is 310 mm; the maximum uplift rate is 29 mm/a, and the cumulative maximum uplift is 135 mm. Moreover, the maximum tilt and curvature are 3.5 mm/m and 0.19 mm/m2, respectively, which are beyond the safety thresholds of buildings; thus, continuous monitoring is necessary. Based on the evolution pattern of surface deformation, the surface deformation prediction model was proposed by integrating SBAS InSAR and an LSTM neural network. The experiment results showed that the LSTM neural network can accurately predict the deformation trend, with a maximum root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.1 mm. Finally, the relationship between the residual surface deformation and time after mine closure was analyzed, and the mechanisms of surface subsidence and uplift were discussed, which provide a theoretical reference for better understanding the surface deformation process of closed mines and the prevention of surface deformation.

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is a key indicator to describe terrestrial ecosystem functions and carbon sinks. The CASA model was improved by optimizing the parameters optimum temperature and maximum light use efficiency ( $\varepsilon_{max}$ ), and the NEP value of the European terrestrial ecosystem was calculated by combining the soil respiration model. The results showed that when using vegetation classification data to optimize parameter $\varepsilon_{max}$ , the R2 of NEP between estimates and observations increased from 0.252 to 0.403, and the RMSE decreased from 84.557 gC·m -2 ·month -1 to 64.466 gC·m -2 ·month -1 . After further optimizing the optimum temperature, R2 increased to 0.428, and the RMSE decreased to 63.720 gC·m -2 ·month -1 . It indicated that the CASA model could be improved by optimizing $\varepsilon_{max}$ as well as optimum temperature, which was a good approach to improve the NEP estimations. Based on this, the NEP spatiotemporal changes in various regions of Europe were analyzed using the optimization results. The NEP values of European terrestrial ecosystem has regional differences, showing a pattern of western region > southern region > central region > eastern region > northern region. The monthly change of NEP in each region is a single peak curve with high in summer and low in winter, and the annual overall value is positive (i.e., it shows a carbon sink). The research can enable us to obtain the carbon source/sink distribution information in Europe more accurately and provide a scientific reference for carbon balance policy formulation in the region.

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology can obtain one-dimensional surface displacements in the radar line of sight (LOS). In the field of mining subsidence, large 3D movements often occur at the same time, and hence InSAR derived one-dimensional LOS displacements can hardly reflect the actual surface motion in mining areas. To realize the monitoring of three-dimensional large surface displacements in mining areas, a method for monitoring three-dimensional large surface displacements in mining areas that combines SAR pixel offset tracking (OT) and an improved mining subsidence model is proposed in this article. First, a new functional relationship between surface subsidence and horizontal movement combined with the characteristics of the overburden rock stress and the deformation characteristics of the fractured rock mass in coal mining areas is established. Then, a three-dimensional surface deformation model is established based on the proposed relationship between surface subsidence and horizontal movement and the radar projection equation, and finally, the optimal parameters of the deformation model are inverted iteratively using LOS deformation results obtained by OT method to retrieve the three-dimensional large displacements of the surface. The significant advantage of the method proposed in this article is that it can accurately acquire the 3D large surface displacements using only two SAR amplitude images with the same imaging geometry. To verify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed algorithm, two scenes of high-resolution spotlight TerraSAR-X images are used in this paper to conduct a three-dimensional surface displacement monitoring experiment on a working panel in the Daliuta mining area in Shaanxi Province, China, based on the proposed method. Experimental monitoring results show that the maximum surface subsidence is approximately 4.5 m, and the maximum horizontal movements in the strike and dip directions are approximately 1.4 m and 1.2 m, respectively. Using GPS measurements to verify the monitoring results, the root mean square error (RMSE) of vertical subsidence is 6.8 cm, and the RMSE of horizontal movement is 7.1 cm. Compared with those in the original mining subsidence model, the accuracies of vertical subsidence and horizontal movement in the proposed model are increased by 28.2% and 37.5%, respectively, which proves the reliability and accuracy of the proposed method.

Underground mining activities often lead to large local surface displacements. In this case, the interferometric fringes are dense, the deformation gradient between adjacent pixels tends to exceed π, and traditional phase unwrapping (PU) methods that satisfy the phase continuity assumption have difficulty correctly retrieving the deformation. Deep learning-based PU methods can overcome the phase continuity assumption to a certain extent. However, deep learning-based PU methods also have shortcomings, such as weak generalization, difficulty in transfer, and lack of interpretability. To address these issues, this paper presents a new PU method for large gradient deformation of mining areas that couples knowledge and a deep learning network (KLC-Net). This method integrates the knowledge of the mining area subsidence mechanism and the InSAR phase prior knowledge into the learning network and constructs a knowledge-learning coupling framework of input sample constraints, objective function constraints and network structure constraints. The simulation experiments show that when the noise level is less than π, the KLC-Net algorithm is suitable for interferograms with different imaging geometries. The actual engineering experimental results show that even under severe temporal decorrelation conditions, the KLC-Net algorithm can still effectively retrieve surface deformations up to 1.6 m with an average RMSE of 23.5 mm. These experimental results show that the KLC-Net algorithm can effectively improves the ability and accuracy of PU under large gradient deformations in coal mining areas, and also improves the generalization performance and interpretability of deep learning-based PU methods.

Subsidence caused by underground coal mining activities seriously threatens the safety of surface buildings, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar has proven to be one effective tool for subsidence monitoring in mining areas. However, the environmental characteristics of mining areas and the deformation behavior of mining subsidence lead to low coherence of interferogram. In this case, traditional phase unwrapping methods have problems, such as low accuracy, and often fail to obtain correct deformation information. Therefore, a novel phase unwrapping method is proposed using a channel-attention-based fully convolutional neural network (FCNet-CA) for low coherence mining areas, which integrates multiscale feature extraction block, bottleneck block, and can better extract interferometric phase features from the noise. In addition, based on the mining subsidence prediction model and transfer learning method, a new sample generation strategy is proposed, making the training dataset feature information more diverse and closer to the actual scene. Simulation experiment results demonstrate that FCNet-CA can restore the deformation pattern and magnitude in scenarios with high noise and fringe density (even if the phase gradient exceeds π ). FCNet-CA was also applied to the Shilawusu coal mining area in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The experimental results show that, compared with the root mean square error (RMSE) of phase unwrapping network and minimum cost flow, the RMSE of FCNet-CA in the strike direction is reduced by 67.9% and 29.5%, respectively, and by 72.4% and 50.9% in the dip direction, respectively. The actual experimental results further verify the feasibility and effectiveness of FCNet-CA.

Distributed scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DS InSAR) is a widely used technique for monitoring surface deformation, but its effectiveness is often compromised by temporal and spatial decorrelation, leading to degraded interferometric phase quality. Enhancing phase quality through phase linking (PL) is essential. However, existing PL methods struggle to produce high-quality sample coherence matrices (SCMs) due to the inhomogeneity and limited availability of low-coherence homogeneous samples. Consequently, accurately deriving phase matrices, sample coherence magnitude matrices (SCMMs), and precision matrices becomes challenging, significantly impacting the accuracy of PL estimation. To address these limitations, a two-step optimization-based PL (TSO-PL) method is proposed. TSO-PL integrates both the complex and real domain characteristics of the SCM and features two key innovations: 1) feature compression of the SCM (FC-SCM) to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the phase and the accuracy of the coherence value in SCM and 2) adaptive nonlinear shrinkage of the SCMM (ANS-SCMM) to yield a more accurate SCMM by improving its structure. The simulation results demonstrate that TSO-PL is robust to variations in the estimation window size and homogeneous sample number, outperforming the phase triangulation algorithm (PTA), eigenvalue decomposition (EVD), and eigendecomposition-based maximum likelihood (EMI) methods in terms of accuracy and noise reduction. In a case study, TSO-PL improved the maximum deformation rate detection by 29.5%, 36.7%, and 31.1% compared with PTA, EVD, and EMI, respectively, with a significantly lower root mean square error (RMSE) of 11.3 mm. These findings demonstrate that TSO-PL effectively reduces phase noise, preserves fringe integrity, and enhances the identification of high-density monitoring points, leading to more accurate surface deformation assessments.
