The limitations of the thermal, vibration, or electrical monitoring of electric machines such as false indications, low sensitivity, and difficulty of fault interpretation have recently been exposed. This has led to a shift in the direction in research toward applying new techniques for improving the reliability of condition monitoring. With the changing environment, the purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the recent trends in the industrial demand and research activity in condition monitoring technology. The new developments in insulation testing, electrical testing, flux analysis, transient analysis, and fault prognostics are summarized. The challenges and recommendations for future work for the new technologies are also explored to help support target research and development efforts according to industrial needs.

The increasing penetration of wind energy in power systems has forced operators worldwide to develop new grid codes to integrate this form of generation. One important aspect of the problem is the low-voltage ride-through capability of wind generators. This paper describes a solution for wind farms with squirrel-cage asynchronous generators based on the use of a dynamic voltage restorer. Along with a specifically developed control scheme, it provides the wind generator the ability to remain connected during a voltage disturbance and, at the same time, to fulfill the demanding reactive power requirements imposed by recent grid codes. The main experimental results of extensive laboratory tests on system performance are also presented.

Frequency Response Analysis is a well-known technique for the diagnosis of power transformers. Currently, this technique is under research for its application in rotary electrical machines. This paper presents significant results on the application of Frequency Response Analysis to fault detection in field winding of synchronous machines with static excitation. First, the influence of the rotor position on the frequency response is evaluated. Secondly, some relevant test results are shown regarding ground fault and inter-turn fault detection in field windings at standstill condition. The influence of the fault resistance value is also taken into account. This paper also studies the applicability of Frequency Response Analysis in fault detection in field windings while rotating. This represents an important feature because some defects only appear with the machine rated speed. Several laboratory test results show the applicability of this fault detection technique in field windings at full speed with no excitation current

Frequency response analysis (FRA) is a very common test for the diagnosis of power transformers. This paper presents some relevant results on the application of FRA to the diagnosis of rotating machines. First, a reference rotor position for obtaining the reference FRA response of a rotating machine is proposed. Then, FRA with the proposed rotor position is used to identify faults in the stator of the machine. This paper studies turn-to-turn and ground faults in the stator for different fault resistance values. Several laboratory tests demonstrate the applicability and value of the use of FRA in the diagnosis of rotating machines.
