It is a challenging task to advance the excellent strength and structural performance of sandwich structures, while continuing to reduce the weight and cost parameters. Thousands of researchers have studied and developed the core structural innovation with periodical achievements. This review paper concentrates on the core structural trends and impact response of sandwich panels, which highlights the novel design concepts and impact failure modes. Three kinds of core structures have been classified, which are foam-core, two- and three-dimensional periodic cores. It is shown that the core structure of sandwich panels plays a vital role in structural performance and applications. Three common types of loading conditions have been considered, i.e. compression, projectile impact and three-point bending. Examples of novel core structures are further studied and summarised under corresponding impact loadings. Recent applications of sandwich structures are briefly concentrated on aerospace, automotive, marine and civil engineering areas. Furthermore, future research and development prospect of sandwich structures are suggested and predicted.

The present research work is aimed to investigate the effect of infill pattern, density and material types of 3D printed cubes under quasi-static axial compressive loading. The proposed samples were fabricated though 3D printing technique with two different materials, such as 100% polylactic acid (PLA) and 70% vol PLA mixed 30% vol carbon fiber (PLA/CF). Four infill pattern structures such as triangle, rectilinear, line and honeycomb with 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% infill density were prepared. Subsequently, the quasi-static compression tests were performed on the fabricated 3D printed cubes to examine the effect of infill pattern, infill density and material types on crushing failure behaviour and energy-absorbing characteristics. The results revealed that the honeycomb infill pattern of 3D printed PLA cubic structure showed the best energy-absorbing characteristics compared to the other three infill patterns. From the present research study, it is highlighted that the proposed 3D printed structures with different material type, infill pattern and density have great potential to replace the conventional lightweight structures, which could provide better energy-absorbing characteristics.

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) possess unique properties that respond to external stimuli. The current review discusses types of SMPs, fabrication methods, and the characterization of their mechanical, thermal, and shape recovery properties. Research suggests that SMP composites, when infused with fillers, demonstrate enhanced mechanical and thermal characteristics. On the other hand, blends, particularly incorporating polylactic acid (PLA), exhibit the most efficient shape recovery. Furthermore, the crosslinking density in polymer blends impacts the shape recovery force, showcasing a correlation between energy storage capacity and shape recovery force in SMP networks. Overall, SMP blends show promising mechanical, thermal, and shape recovery features, rendering them advantageous for applications of artificial muscles, soft actuators, and biomedical devices. This review also discusses the future prospectives of SMP for robust applications.
