Background and Aim: Despite extensive research, the physiopathology and clinical course of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still not fully understood. It is not known why some COVID-19 patients develop pneumonia while others are asymptomatic or have only mild upper respiratory tract symptoms. The tonsils are an element of the immune system that provide first-line defense against microorganisms entering the body via the upper respiratory tract. This study aimed to evaluate the role of tonsils in preventing the development of COVID-19 pneumonia. Materials and Methods: The study included 198 patients aged 20-40 years who presented to the pandemic outpatient clinic, had confirmed COVID-19 infection, and had no comorbidities. The relationship between lung involvement and history of tonsillectomy was analyzed. Results: Of the 198 patients in the study, 108 were male, 90 were female, and the mean age was 34.7 years. Eighty-three (41.9%) of the patients did not have lung involvement and 115 (58.1%) had lung involvement. Twelve (10.4%) of the patients with lung involvement and 3 (3.6%) of the patients without lung involvement had a history of tonsillectomy. The prevalence of pneumonia did not differ statistically between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Although there was no statistically significant relationship between COVID-19 pneumonia and tonsillectomy in this study, we observed that pneumonia developed in 80% of the 15 patients who underwent tonsillectomy. This suggests that greater caution in terms of lung involvement may be warranted for tonsillectomized patients with COVID-19.

Background and Objectives: Septorhinoplasty aims to improve nasal function and appearance, but change from baseline may not fully reflect the postoperative state perceived by patients. This study compared functional gain, aesthetic gain, and residual postoperative burden in relation to long-term satisfaction after primary septorhinoplasty. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study with cross-sectional long-term assessment included 112 adults who underwent primary open septorhinoplasty (2022–2025) with at least 12 months of follow-up. Nasal obstruction was assessed via Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) and the obstruction domain of the Standardized Cosmesis and Health Nasal Outcomes Survey (SCHNOS-O), cosmetic concerns with SCHNOS-C, and satisfaction with the Rhinoplasty Outcomes Evaluation (ROE). Associations with postoperative ROE scores were examined using correlation analyses and multivariable regression with HC3 robust standard errors. Results: Median NOSE score decreased from 50 to 5 and SCHNOS-C from 28 to 0; median postoperative ROE was 23/24. In the adjusted gain-score model, each 5-point greater SCHNOS-C improvement was associated with a 0.74-point higher ROE score (95% CI, 0.29–1.18; p = 0.001), whereas NOSE improvement was not associated with ROE score (B = 0.03 per 10 points; 95% CI, −0.11 to 0.18; p = 0.649). In the residual-burden model, postoperative NOSE (B = −0.87 per 10 points; 95% CI, −1.26 to −0.48) and SCHNOS-C (B = −3.27 per 5 points; 95% CI, −4.39 to −2.15) scores were independently associated with lower ROE scores (both p < 0.001). Conclusions: Aesthetic improvement and lower residual functional and cosmetic burden were associated with greater postoperative satisfaction. These concurrent associations support assessing postoperative status alongside change scores, with caution regarding restricted score distributions and overlapping patient-reported constructs.

Aim: Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a rare infection of the nose and paranasal sinuses that can be fatal. Infection may lead to tissue infarction, necrosis, and thrombosis and rapidly spread intracranially. The aim of this study is to highlight the increasing cases of AIFRS after covid-19 and to investigate the parameters affecting mortality. Material and Method: Total 11 patients diagnosed with AIFRS after COVID-19 were included in this study. Patient age, gender, comorbid diseases, initial symptoms, time between COVID-19 diagnosis and AIFRS diagnosis, intensive care hospitalization history, medical treatments, surgical findings, antifungal treatment, fungal species grown in culture, mortality, and the relationships of these parameters with mortality were also evaluated. Results: A total of 11 patients diagnosed with AIFRS after COVID-19 were included in the study. Among these patients, 81.8% were male, 18. 2% were female, and ages ranged from 57 years to 89 years. The mean time between COVID-19 infection and development of IFRS in patients was 26.09±18.04 days. The initial symptoms in 45.45% of the patients were unilateral periorbital edema, vision loss, and total ophthalmoplegia. The surgical approach was purely endoscopic in all patients. In our study, the mortality rate was 72.7% in COVID-19 related AIFRS patients. Conclusion: As a result, in our study, we found an increase in AIFRS incidence and mortality due to the systemic effects of COVID 19 and the treatments used for it. AIFRS should be suspected when a patient presents acute sinusitis symptoms after COVID-19 infection.

Laryngeal diseases most commonly present to the clinic with symptoms such as hoarseness, dysphagia, respiratory problems, odynophagia, and unilateral otalgia. Patients whose complaints persist for longer than two weeks should be evaluated to rule out organic causes.During the physical examination, the patient’s general condition, respiration, and voice quality should be assessed. If necessary, the larynx can be visualized using indirect laryngoscopy. For imaging of the larynx, ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be utilized. In patients with suspected malignancy, it is necessary to obtain a biopsy under general anesthesia using direct laryngoscopy.
