Objectives: Tinnitus is a condition that commonly affects individuals’ daily activities. We aimed to evaluate the anxiety sensitivity, levels of anxiety and depression, and personality traits of patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. Methods: The study included 42 patients, who visited the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic, complained of having tinnitus for at least 1 year and did not have any previous peripheral vestibular diseases or psychiatric treatment history. Forty-five healthy individuals volunteered to be in the control group. We administered the Tinnitus-Severity-Index (TSI), Anxiety-Sensitivity-Index-3 (ASI-3), Beck-Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck-Depression-Inventory (BDI) and Eysenck-Personality- Questionnaire (EPQ) to the study participants. Results: The BDI score was significantly higher in the patient group. The ASI-3, EPQ, and BAI scores of the patients did not differ statistically. A positive correlation was found between the EPQ neuroticism subscale scores and the ASI-3, BDI, and BAI scores of the patient cases. There was also a positive correlation between the TSI scores and the BAI, ASI-3, and neuroticism scores of the tinnitus group. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, few studies have evaluated anxiety sensitivity, anxiety and depression levels, and personality traits and no studies evaluating patients and controls together. In cases where tinnitus and psychiatric diseases are comorbid, both conditions should be treated to achieve the best outcomes for the patients’ quality of life.

Background and Aim: Despite extensive research, the physiopathology and clinical course of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still not fully understood. It is not known why some COVID-19 patients develop pneumonia while others are asymptomatic or have only mild upper respiratory tract symptoms. The tonsils are an element of the immune system that provide first-line defense against microorganisms entering the body via the upper respiratory tract. This study aimed to evaluate the role of tonsils in preventing the development of COVID-19 pneumonia. Materials and Methods: The study included 198 patients aged 20-40 years who presented to the pandemic outpatient clinic, had confirmed COVID-19 infection, and had no comorbidities. The relationship between lung involvement and history of tonsillectomy was analyzed. Results: Of the 198 patients in the study, 108 were male, 90 were female, and the mean age was 34.7 years. Eighty-three (41.9%) of the patients did not have lung involvement and 115 (58.1%) had lung involvement. Twelve (10.4%) of the patients with lung involvement and 3 (3.6%) of the patients without lung involvement had a history of tonsillectomy. The prevalence of pneumonia did not differ statistically between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Although there was no statistically significant relationship between COVID-19 pneumonia and tonsillectomy in this study, we observed that pneumonia developed in 80% of the 15 patients who underwent tonsillectomy. This suggests that greater caution in terms of lung involvement may be warranted for tonsillectomized patients with COVID-19.

Aim: Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a rare infection of the nose and paranasal sinuses that can be fatal. Infection may lead to tissue infarction, necrosis, and thrombosis and rapidly spread intracranially. The aim of this study is to highlight the increasing cases of AIFRS after covid-19 and to investigate the parameters affecting mortality. Material and Method: Total 11 patients diagnosed with AIFRS after COVID-19 were included in this study. Patient age, gender, comorbid diseases, initial symptoms, time between COVID-19 diagnosis and AIFRS diagnosis, intensive care hospitalization history, medical treatments, surgical findings, antifungal treatment, fungal species grown in culture, mortality, and the relationships of these parameters with mortality were also evaluated. Results: A total of 11 patients diagnosed with AIFRS after COVID-19 were included in the study. Among these patients, 81.8% were male, 18. 2% were female, and ages ranged from 57 years to 89 years. The mean time between COVID-19 infection and development of IFRS in patients was 26.09±18.04 days. The initial symptoms in 45.45% of the patients were unilateral periorbital edema, vision loss, and total ophthalmoplegia. The surgical approach was purely endoscopic in all patients. In our study, the mortality rate was 72.7% in COVID-19 related AIFRS patients. Conclusion: As a result, in our study, we found an increase in AIFRS incidence and mortality due to the systemic effects of COVID 19 and the treatments used for it. AIFRS should be suspected when a patient presents acute sinusitis symptoms after COVID-19 infection.
