Waste treatment consists of activities required to make sure that waste has the least practical impact on the environment. In Slovakia, more than 50% of waste is in storage. Waste development depends on the economic situation of the state. In Slovakia, there is economic intolerance of waste treatment due to the weaker economic situation of the inhabitants. The goal of this contribution is to study the development of waste production in Slovakia in regard to economic indexes of households with the aim of improving waste management. The goal is achieved by searching for a relation between economic indexes and households by a correlation matrix and by verification of polynomial dependence. According to the results of the statistical importance, we found similarity of the regions in chosen indexes by using of cluster analysis. By this method a sustainable economy and healthy environment is guaranteed and waste is used to produce energy.

Humanity is dependent on natural resources. Use and productivity of these resources plays an important role in energy savings and circular economy. The goal of this contribution is to evaluate productivity of resources in the frame of EU countries. Single analysis deals with data from the publicly available portal database and collected data were processed in the statistical software JMP. The trend of development and analysis of variability and linear dependence helped to create cluster analysis and comparison of the EU countries. The results from the view of average value of the indicator registered the growth, and from the view of variability the statistically important differences were verified for EU member states. Some pairs of indicators recorded positive, while some pairs recorded negative linear dependence. Cluster analysis shows two groups of countries—the first one with positive results, having the lowest tax burden in the case of energy taxes and environment, and the second one with negative results, having the highest tax burden of environmental and energy policy. The results are useful for a proper setting of energy and environmental goals that can increase the effectiveness of resource productivity in the countries studied.

Tourism currently contributes significantly to the national economy. When investing in the accommodation facility on the real-estate market, the tourism sector also represents a certain risk due to a high level of seasonality. This paper investigates the risks related to prices, income and occupancy of accommodation facilities for selected regions in Slovakia. The value of accommodation facilities is estimated using discounted cash flow, probabilistic distribution of rental prices and occupancy of accommodation facilities in selected Slovak regions. The results provide information for potential and profitable investments in exposed regions in tourism. The information can be used in the field of risk management to avoid or reduce the risk of risk investments. Although the resulting values were calculated only for some selected regions, the proposed procedure can be used for any region and compared with the current values.

Activity in the mining industry is based on the profitability principle similar to other business sectors. In the case of stone pits, gravel and sand quarries, it presents a very complex task, mainly due to the fact that the economy of localities is influenced greatly by natural conditions, which cannot be changed. The presented contribution deals with the problem of how mining companies, realizing the surface extraction of construction materials, could be profitable in the future. The main research method of this contribution presents regression and correlation analyses with the goal of determining parameters with a decisive influence on the future economic development of the locality. A complex system of stone pit, gravel and sand quarries demanded discriminant analysis to evaluate individual localities with the goal of dividing them into profitable and not profitable localities. The results of the contribution divide localities of quarry mining among profitable or not profitable, serving for predicting the future development of the company, based on discriminant analysis. The results of maximally possible measures respect assumptions, enabling the correct application of such multivariate statistical methods. A further orientation of the research in an area of model creation for predicting the future development of the company is possible in the application of logistic regression and neuron nets.

In the European Union, basic strategy results from the need to provide intelligent, sustainable, and inclusive growth, along with respect to social and economic impacts of waste treatment. The paper focuses on municipal waste and its separation. Generally, within global waste management initiatives, the main goal is to minimize the negative effects of waste on the environment, as well as to increase and optimize the sources’ efficiency in the waste economy. Research on municipal waste development and its separation was done in individual regions of Slovakia to find if socially weaker regions have worse waste treatment. The results were compared according to the waste development per inhabitant and per household, as well as through rate indexes, which are connected to relationships between waste, social, and economic indexes. The results confirmed research results from other countries that show that the volume of municipal waste is increasing due to increased living standards of inhabitants. However, on the other hand, waste separation rates also increased—mainly based on the legislative support.

Because of the limited availability of earth’s resources there is a need to provide business sustainability that reflects the efforts of a company to reduce its negative impacts on social, environmental, and economic areas. This can be achieved by searching through various indexes that directly or indirectly influence the effectiveness of any business, including the mining industry, which represents the basic industry in a number of countries. The objective of this paper was to evaluate and compare the business environment in areas of earth resources in Slovakia according employment, gross value added, global competitiveness index, ‘Doing Business’ and the index of the business environment with the aim of identifying obstacles that limit business development. The results confirm the belief that using raw materials has positive impacts on social and economic areas of sustainable development in Slovakia. Business with earth’s resources in Slovakia could be improved by the permanent implementation of new approaches for increasing the effectiveness in the area of mining and processing, as well as better conditions for new businessmen. Our results can serve the basis for an approach to management of mining organizations with a view to sustainability, which will also require research of other indicators in all regions and industries, ultimately contributing to the national economy.

One of the most important tasks in the future should be increasing the processing level and products’ finalization on the base of raw materials, since they have an impact on the economic growth. The goal of the contribution is to search for the development of social and economic indicators, influencing the usage of raw materials from the viewpoint of sustainability of the Slovakian industry. By the indicators, we analyzed mining in the individual regions of Slovakia through an analysis of the macro environment. The analysis showed that employment in the mining organizations recorded a decreasing trend, whereas the investment in Slovakia influenced sustainability positively. Value added and the gross domestic product (GDP) in the mining sector recorded a fluctuating tendency. Results confirm that the usage of raw materials is characterized by positive impacts on the social and economic area of sustainable development in Slovakia. The results can serve as the basis for the management of mining organizations towards sustainability, which will demand research of other indicators in all regions and industries, contributing to the national economy.

With a growing number of negative environmental burdens, several countries have increasingly begun to address the issue of environmental protection through a number of measures. Such measures include higher spending on public health, conservation of natural resources, less emission to the air, efficiency of waste sorting, reduction of water pollution, and groundwater. The contribution is based on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) values to perform a cluster analysis of selected countries - especially OECD (organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. The database needed for analysis is the EPI indicator for the years for 2008 to 2018. The result will be clusters that will include countries with similar results of the EPI indicators for the reference period. It will be important for us to track the position of the Slovak Republic in this analysis.

The constant consumption of resources exerts pressure on the environment. In this sense, waste management has obtained increasing attention from the view of a circular economy. The European Union deals with these mentioned aspects, trying maintain long-term competitiveness and to provide sustainable development in accordance with all related environmental aspects. This paper focuses on the evaluation of the production of communal waste in 36 EU countries. The main aim is to evaluate the success of countries’ efforts to decrease waste production and increase recycling rates. The methodology used for the evaluation included data collected from the publicly available database Eurostat, consequent analyses and evaluation in the statistical software JMP 13 through regression, distribution, and cluster analysis, and the interpretation of the results. The results of the cluster analysis showed that despite clear EU waste management legislation, EU member states have significantly different waste management systems at the national level. However, generally, we could see positive correlation between the generation of waste and recycling rates. Although, Malta, Austria, Greece, and Norway recorded a decreasing level of waste recycling over the last several years, some countries (Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania) had significantly lower recycling rates accompanied by low landfill taxes. The evaluation of waste production and recycling can be used for government policy in the area of waste management, as well as for individual communities dealing with communal waste.

The financial health of a company can be seen as the ability to maintain a balance against changing conditions in the environment and at the same time in relation to everyone participating in the business. In the evaluation of financial health and prediction of financial problems of the companies, various indexes are used that can serve as input for expert estimation or creation of various models using, for example, multi-dimensional statistical methods. The practical application of the proper method for evaluation of financial health has been analysed in post-communist countries, since they have common historic experiences and economic interests. During the research we followed up the following indexes: Altman model, Taffler model, Springate model, and the index IN, based on multi-dimensional discrimination analysis. From the research results there is obvious a necessity to combine available methods in post-communist countries and at least to eliminate their disadvantages partially. Experiences from prediction models have proved their relatively high prediction ability, but only in perfect conditions, which cannot be affirmed in post-communist countries. The task remains to modify existing indexes to concrete situations and problems of the individual industries in the chosen countries, which have unique conditions for business making.

The global financial crisis has greatly limited access to both public and private sources of finance in the recent decades. Markets and national governments emitted low interested and multi-structured financial means with low liquidity. In the post-crisis period national governments tend to regulate their financial sectors more strictly, paying more attention to risky and low interest financial sources, necessary for investments, on which private equity is dependent. Private equity funds grew significantly in the last two decades, both in the USA and in Europe. Such new ways of debt financing and cheap money support massive growth in the industrial sectors of individual countries. This research is studying the positive impact of private equity on management of the whole industries and economies in Europe. Our analysis stems from the general assumption that private equity has positive influence on industrial performance and our empirical data evidences that private equity reacts to economic decrease more intensively than under the business model without financial leverage. The goal of this chapter is to show how private equity contributes to the growth of industrial sectors, performance of industrial companies, with a special emphasis on the mining sector.

This article deals with research on the impact of waste incineration processes on the environment within a particular region by means of computer simulation and logistics principles. The area of interest for this case study considers the aspects of the practical application of using the above methods and principles in order to reduce the environmental impacts of the waste incineration process in the Slovak Republic. At the initial stage of simulation model design, it is necessary to establish a formalized scheme, which is the basis for creating the actual simulation model. Then in the next stage the simulation model is created by combining building blocks within the given simulation software. The simulation results show that incineration during a one-year period produces about 15,266 tons of plastic and electrical components, and will release about 590,000 GJ of energy and about 199,000 tons of steam and 287 tons of other emissions with only 3 milligrams of dioxins. The computer simulation method is used to analyse, and subsequently adjust and improve the waste incineration process in order to achieve the desired parameter values – specifically the amount of heat produced, and the amount of generated steam and air pollutants.

The chapter attention is given to fiscal reforms in Slovakia. Reform measurements and their impact on the state budget have been investigated in selected areas of the economy. Reforms are always lively discussed issue. On the one hand, they are reasoned by expert arguments, but also by political ideas and emotions. On the other hand, we must see that the reforms affect all citizens, mainly children, students, workers, unemployed and pensioners. The chapter contains a brief overview of the most important reforms in the years 2002-2006 as well as preliminary impacts on the economy, inhabitants and public finances. The aim of this chapter is to describe the fiscal reforms in Slovakia, to bring close principles that were behind the changes and to evaluate their influence on the country's competitiveness. The aim is to show how economic policy and reforms have changed the socio-economic model in Slovakia and what results it has brought.
