This paper analyzes the tribological behavior of the Ti6Al4V ELI alloy subjected to laser texturization for medical purposes. Laser texturing enables one to observe specific patterns of the material surface at established depths. Microtexturing of the samples was performed using a 355 nm picosecond laser. The influence of the microtexturing process (depending on the process parameters) on the geometric parameters of the proposed laser texturing pattern was evaluated. Selected samples were subjected to tribological testing using the ball-on-plate technique in dry and lubricant-sliding methods (in Ringer solution). The wear properties were evaluated by comparing the coefficient friction, wear volumes, and wear ratio. A scanning electron microscope characterized the morphologies of the wear scar and the wear mechanism. The experimental results show that the surface texturing and the changes in microgrooves can reduce wear. The results indicate, that samples after laser texturing were characterized by 15% higher microhardness, compared to those in the initial state. It was found, a 26% reduction in friction coefficient and 29% in the wear volume compared to the smooth, untextured surface samples under lubricated conditions. The decrease in value of the coefficient friction and wear volume for the samples after the laser texturing process is an effect of synergistic of entrapped wear debris in micro-grooves and increased hardness for samples after laser textured.

Herein, we analyzed the morphology of atmospheric plasma-sprayed (APS) coating on medical 316L stainless steel and its influence on the physical and electrochemical properties of implant application. Fivetypes of coatings were examined: hydroxyapatite (HAp), titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), Ti/HAp and Zr/HAp. The base properties of the coatings were analyzed via chemical and phase composition, surface topography, surface wettability and in particular the corrosion resistance in Ringer solution in immersed conditions and potentiodynamic test, and EIS analysis. APS coating of pure HAp on 316L stainless steel showed poor cohesive bonding to the substrate material, whereas the application of Ti and Zr interlayer prior to HAp deposition improved surface morphology and coating properties. The beneficial effect of Ti and Zr interlayer under HAp layer on binding was demonstrated. HAp containing coatings (HAp, Ti/HAp and Zr/HAp) show Ca/P ratio greater than 1.8, which may positively influence the differentiation of osteogenic cells and good adhesion to bones. Among the studied materials, the composite coatings with Zr or Zr/HAp showed favorable physicochemical properties and the highest corrosion resistance in Ringer solution.

The AlSi10Mg alloy is characterized by a high strength-to-weight ratio, good formability, and satisfying corrosion resistance; thus, it is very often used in automotive and aerospace applications. However, the main limitation of using this alloy is its low yield strength and ductility. The equal-channel angular pressing is a processing tool that allows one to obtain ultrafine-grained or nanomaterials, with exceptional mechanical and physical properties. The purpose of the paper was to analyze the influence of the ECAP process on the structure and hardness of the AlSi10Mg alloy, obtained by the selective laser melting process. Four types of samples were examined: as-fabricated, heat-treated, and subjected to one and two ECAP passes. The microstructure analysis was performed using light and electron microscope systems (scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope). To evaluate the effect of ECAP on the mechanical properties, hardness measurements were performed. We found that the samples that underwent the ECAP process were characterized by a higher hardness than the heat-treated sample. It was also found that the ECAP processing promoted the formation of structures with semicircular patterns and multiple melt pool boundaries with a mean grain size of 0.24 μm.

Titanium and its alloys are characterized by high biocompatibility and good corrosion resistance as a result of the ability to form a TiO2 oxide layer. However, based on literature data it can be concluded that titanium degradation products, in the form of titanium particles, metal-protein groups, oxides and ions, may cause allergic, inflammatory reactions and bone resorption. The corrosion process of Ti6Al4V in the human body environment may be intensified by a decreased pH and concentration of chloride compounds. The purpose of this article was to analyze the corrosion resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy, obtained by the selective laser melting method in a corrosion solution of neutral pH and in a solution simulating peri-implant inflammatory conditions. Additionally, the influence of zinc oxide deposited by the atomic layer deposition method on the improvement of the physicochemical behavior of the Ti6Al4V alloy was analyzed. In order to characterize the ZnO layer, tests of chemical and phase composition as well as surface morphology investigation were performed. As part of the assessment of the physicochemical properties of the uncoated samples and those with the ZnO layer, tests of wetting angle, pitting corrosion and impedance corrosion were carried out. The number of ions released after the potentiodynamic test were measured using the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP–AES) method. It can be concluded that samples after surface modification (with the ZnO layer) were characterized by favorable physicochemical properties and had higher corrosion resistance.

In the selective laser melting process (SLM), the region irradiated by the laser beam is melted and quickly solidified, forming solidification lines (laser scan tracks) with symmetrical shapes. Because of the unique (rapid) crystallization conditions, the subgrain structures, typically observed inside these solidification lines, could also have variable geometric symmetrical patterns, e.g., cellular, pentagonal, or hexagonal cellular. The existence of such distinctive microstructures in SLM-made alloys has a significant impact on their superior mechanical and corrosion properties. Thus, any modification of this symmetrical microstructure (due to post-processing) can degrade or improve the properties of SLM-fabricated alloys. This study presents the experimental results on the effects of heat treatment and ECAP on microstructure modification and corrosion behavior of SLM-fabricated AlSi10Mg alloy. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for microstructural analysis. The corrosion properties of the given samples were determined using open-circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. EBSD observations showed that the imposed strain resulted in an obvious reduction in grain size to ~1.42 µm and ~0.24 µm after the first and second ECAP passes, respectively. Electrochemical tests revealed that the corrosion resistance of the ECAP-processed AlSi10Mg alloy improved significantly, which was confirmed by a nobler Ecorr and lower Icorr values, and higher polarization resistance. The final results indicated that the strain-induced crystalline defects provided more nucleation sites for the formation of a denser and thicker oxide film, thus enhancing the corrosion resistance of the AlSi10Mg alloy.

Silicones are often used for various types of coatings, but due to their poor mechanical properties, they often require modification to meet specific requirements. At the same time, various production processes throughout the world generate different types of waste, the disposal of which is harmful to the environment. One possible solution is to use production waste as a filler. In this paper, the authors investigated how the use of metallurgical production waste products as fillers changed the mechanical properties of silicone composites prepared by casting. Composite samples were characterized using tensile tests, resilience, pin-on-disc, Schopper–Schlobach abrasion, hardness, and density measurements. Based on the obtained results, the authors assessed the effect of each of the fillers used in different weight proportions. The results showed that the silicone composite filled with 5 wt% zinc dust showed the lowest decrease in tensile strength and Young’s modulus, with a simultaneous significant reduction in abrasion compared with the reference sample. This research shows that zinc waste can be successfully introduced into a silicone matrix in cases where it is important to reduce abrasive wear.
