In recent years, with the rapid enhancement of computing power, deep learning methods have been widely applied in wireless networks and achieved impressive performance. To effectively exploit the information of graph-structured data as well as contextual information, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been introduced to address a series of optimization problems of wireless networks. In this overview, we first illustrate the construction method of wireless communication graph for various wireless networks and simply introduce the progress of several classical paradigms of GNNs. Then, several applications of GNNs in wireless networks such as resource allocation and several emerging fields, are discussed in detail. Finally, some research trends about the applications of GNNs in wireless communication systems are discussed.

A trusted routing scheme is very important to ensure the routing security and efficiency of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). There are a lot of studies on improving the trustworthiness between routing nodes, using cryptographic systems, trust management, or centralized routing decisions, etc. However, most of the routing schemes are difficult to achieve in actual situations as it is difficult to dynamically identify the untrusted behaviors of routing nodes. Meanwhile, there is still no effective way to prevent malicious node attacks. In view of these problems, this paper proposes a trusted routing scheme using blockchain and reinforcement learning to improve the routing security and efficiency for WSNs. The feasible routing scheme is given for obtaining routing information of routing nodes on the blockchain, which makes the routing information traceable and impossible to tamper with. The reinforcement learning model is used to help routing nodes dynamically select more trusted and efficient routing links. From the experimental results, we can find that even in the routing environment with 50% malicious nodes, our routing scheme still has a good delay performance compared with other routing algorithms. The performance indicators such as energy consumption and throughput also show that our scheme is feasible and effective.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication operated in frequency bands between 30 and 300 GHz has attracted extensive attention due to the potential ability of offering orders of magnitude greater bandwidths combined with further gains via beamforming and spatial multiplexing from multi-element antenna arrays. mmwave system may exploit the hybrid analog and digital precoding to achieve simultaneously the diversity, array and multiplexing gain with a lower cost of implementation. Motivated by this, in this paper, we investigate the design of hybrid precoder and combiner with sub-connected architecture, where each radio frequency chain is connected to only a subset of base station antennas from the perspective of energy efficient transmission. The problem of interest is a non-convex and NP-hard problem that is difficult to solve directly. In order to address it, we resort to design a two-layer optimization method to solve the problem of interest by exploiting jointly the interference alignment and fractional programming. First, the analog precoder and combiner are optimized via the alternating-direction optimization method where the phase shifter can be easily adjusted with an analytical structure. Then, we optimize the digital precoder and combiner based on an effective multiple-input multiple-output channel coefficient. The convergence of the proposed algorithms is proved using the monotonic boundary theorem and fractional programming theory. Extensive simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the presented method and to evaluate the energy efficiency performance under various system configurations.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands, which offer abundant underutilized spectral resources, have been explored and exploited in the past several years to meet the requirements of emerging wireless services highlighted by high data rates, ultrareliability, and ultralow delivery latency. Yet, the unique characteristics of mmWave, e.g., continuous wide bandwidth, large path, and penetration losses, along with hardware constraints, call for innovative technologies for mmWave communication. Recently, an extensive amount of work on mmWave communication has been carried out by researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry, and various technologies have been developed for mmWave communication systems to fulfill the full potential of mmWave frequency bands. In this article, we present a comprehensive survey of the standardization of mmWave communication, the latest progress and outcomes of the research on mmWave communication technologies, and the emerging applications of mmWave communication. In particular, we provide a timely and in-depth summary of the state-of-the-art technology specifications of mmWave communication with an emphasis on the physical (PHY) layer. Then, we elaborate on a number of well-established or promising antenna architectures in mmWave communication systems and investigate the enabling PHY layer transmission technologies. Finally, we show some existing and emerging applications of mmWave communication and discuss the potential open research issues.

Driven by the explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices with stringent requirements on latency and reliability, ultra-reliability and low latency communication (uRLLC) has become one of the three key communication scenarios for the 5th generation (5G) and 6G communication systems. In this paper, we focus on the beamforming design problem for the downlink multiuser uRLLC system. Since the strict demand on the reliability and latency, in general, short packet transmission is a favorable way for uRLLC systems, which indicates the classical Shannon’s capacity formula is no longer applicable. With the finite blocklength transmission, the achievable rate is greatly influenced by the reliability and finite blocklength. Using the developed achievable rate formula for finite blocklength transmission, we respectively formulate the problems of interest as the weighted sum rate maximization, energy efficiency maximization, and user fairness optimization by considering the maximum allowable transmission power and minimum rate requirement. These problems considered are non-convex and are hard to obtain the global optimal solution, even for the local optimal solution. To overcome these difficulties, some important insights have been discovered by analyzing the function of achievable rate. For example, an analytical solution of the minimum rate requirement is provided with respective to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Based on the discovered results, we provide algorithms to optimize the beamforming vectors and power allocation, which are guaranteed to converge to a local optimum solution to the formulated problems with low computational complexity. Our simulation results reveal that our proposed beamforming algorithms outperform the zero-forcing beamforming algorithm with equal power or water filling allocation widely used in the existing literatures.

Achieving a good tradeoff between spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) is important for the emerging wireless communication systems. Motivated by this, we study multiuser downlink beamforming in massive MIMO systems for maximizing a new metric of resource efficiency (RE), which is defined as a weighted combination of EE and SE. The new measure has more flexibility in striking the balance between SE and EE, but brings enormous difficulties in solving the resulting problem. To this end, we first investigate an uplink-downlink duality for the RE maximization. The conventional uplink-downlink duality only applies in the SE or the capacity region, and has yet not been explicitly established for the EE or the RE. In this paper, we prove with rigorous derivation that the duality has a more general form which can be directly used to tackle the EE or RE beamforming optimization problem. Based on the duality, we then develop an optimization algorithm to realize spectral and energy efficient multiuser beamforming with either instantaneous or statistical channel state information (CSI). Numerical results finally verify that the design based on statistical CSI is able to asymptotically achieve the performance obtained with instantaneous CSI, but with much lower complexity.
